A fictional webseries that represents LARPers the way we actually want to be represented.

Stretch Goals!

  • REACHED: $5700 - An original soundtrack will be written and composed by actual musicians for the pilot. Everyone who pledges $25 or more will receive the digital files!
  • REACHED: $6500 - (Edit) New sound equipment! We realized this was actually a more critical goal than we first thought, so we've moved it up the list.
  • $7500 - We will be able to hire someone to make customized leather armor for our actors.
  • $8000 - We'll be able to rent a giant studio space for several green screen scenes!

Special Updates:

Congratulations, everyone! We have officially reached our 50% funding mark! Do you know what that means? Every backer gets to see a short parody version of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's "Thrift Shop" as a thank you. We're going to get started on the lyrics...this is going to be interesting. Haha.

We are producing a fictional web series that represents the way we interpret LARPing. This is a story about LARPers--by actual LARPers. We understand that this hobby is all about community and storytelling, and it is a game that teaches players to make friendships and think strategically in very high stress situations.

We don’t need to write a story about LARPers murdering each other or fighting magical beasts who have escaped into the real world to entertain people.  We only have to write a story about what it’s really like to LARP. Further, we only need to write one episode to make you fall in love with the characters and the charming LARP community where their conflict unfolds.

That is why we have created this project. We are producing the first episode of our web series, Basic Adventuring 101: Die Loudly or Die Permanently, and we want to produce it in a way that our fellow LARPers are proud to be called LARPers. We could produce an entire season--and that is the eventual goal--but we are starting with the pilot to prove to you that we can deliver what we promise.

With your pledges, we can make a pilot that is extraordinary.

How is this going to work?

The pilot will be about 10 minutes long and will follow the story of Karen, a first-time LARPer. Through her eyes you will experience a taste of the role play, the fight scenes, the friendships, the laughter, and the unique way LARPers cross between fantasy and reality.

While the Kickstarter campaign runs during April, we are hard at work on pre-production.  We are gathering and making costumes, creating prosthetic goblin noses, booking locations and building sets, gathering additional film equipment, and finalizing storyboards and our script.

We will begin fight choreography rehearsals and filming at the end of May in Columbus, Ohio, and plan to finish up filming by mid-June. This means that post-production will start by the end of June.  Post-production will mean editing the footage, color correction, adding special effects, and adding  sound effects and music.

The final video will be ready by August, and will be released for free online by August 31, 2013.  That means that everyone will get to enjoy our creation!  However, every one of our backers will get to see the video a week earlier than everyone else.

The story is told through the eyes of Karen, a new LARPer who is unsure how she is going to fit in when she joins her older sister's overly enthusiastic adventuring group. Reclusive Karen is thrown headfirst into the fantasy world of Mariador, a land where magic flows freely and conflicts are often resolved with the blade of a sword. Things seem to be going well until she mistakenly opens a mysterious treasure box, releasing an evil into the world that has been kept secret for aeons.

Working together with new friends, she’ll have to undo the damage she’s caused, learn the rules to the game, and avoid dying if at all possible. Like LARPing in general, it’s full of exciting action scenes. Swashbuckling adventurers. Dangerous caves. Heroes. Evil monsters. Terrifying apparitions. And – most importantly, some would say – bacon.

First, we should answer the burning question we know is on everybody’s mind: What is LARPing? LARPing stands for Live Action Role Playing. Players create characters and, unlike traditional table-top RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, assume the role of the character they have created. This involves everything from dressing up and creating props to fighting enemies and acting out the choices that this character would make. It’s a very dramatic gaming system, and one that lends itself well to the television medium.

Oftentimes when people think of LARPing, they think of either the now infamous “Lightning Bolt” video or a certain popular movie starring Paul Rudd and that kid from Superbad. But LARPing is so much more than that!

The core of what makes LARPing special is the sense of community. People from a wide list of backgrounds come out and play a game together. There aren't many nerdy hobbies that have spending time outside and talking to others face-to-face as the driving force behind it! LARPing is a game where you have to work well with each other, make friendships, and think strategically in order to succeed. A lone adventurer won’t be able to defeat a rabid band of ogres, but the same adventurer with a trusted group of companions can bring down an entire kingdom.

Strong stories are essential to LARPing. People -- from the players and merchants to the staff and non-player characters -- work together to build larger stories out of their own in-game background and actions. This series will focus on the tale of a first-time LARPer, Karen.

In order to bring our whole vision to life we need money. We have done a lot of work on this project already, and a lot of the work is being done for free. The money it takes to create a film-quality pilot episode is a lot more than the money we are asking for in this campaign.  What we are asking for is the bare minimum we will need to get this project done, but we are also putting additional money of our own into this production.  This isn't our free ride--this is the boost we need.

We already have scripts for the first four episodes, character designs, logo, storyboards, and most importantly, a great cast and crew ready to work and make a great product. With your pledges, we can pay for quality:

  • Costumes— One of the most important aspects of making a character in a LARP is the costume. Chainmail, leather armor, and period-appropriate clothing are all in store.

  • Props— From axes, swords, shields, and treasure chests, we need a lot of specialized props that many of us don’t exactly have lying around.

  • Makeup— This helps us look extra-beautiful-- or extra bloody, bruised, and beaten for the camera.

  • Sets— Believe it or not, we don’t own a castle where we can do our filming. This would help cover the cost of permits, rentals, or set pieces we will need to build.

  • Special Effects— Magic isn't real, no matter how much we wish it was.  We need to create magical effects on the computer in order to bring our LARPer's imaginations to life.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Money: Creating a full production by paying out of pocket is very hard, but thankfully we have some extra money set aside to subsidize the project and what we raise through Kickstarter. We expect there are going to be some unknown expenses, but we are prepared to swallow extra costs and still produce a quality product. We are confident that in the end, this is going to be a pilot that is going to leave you asking for the rest of the season.

Film Schedule: We will be shooting this pilot on a very tight filming schedule, as we have a limited number of weekends during the summer that we will be able to coordinate everyone’s schedules. Our actors and crew are agreeing to give up many of their weekends, and to minimize potential film disruptions we are looking to create a temporary indoor studio for much of the filming. In addition to this, we are planning extra film days in the case of bad weather for our outdoor shoots.

Outsourcing: The editing process of any video production can be extremely lengthy and detailed. We are looking to outsource a lot of this work to professional post-production editors in order to produce the pilot in a timely fashion and in a way that the finished product is completely polished.

Conclusion: Our team is filled with many video production veterans who understand the amount of work and effort required to make a fantastic video. We do not have any delusions going into this project as to its difficulty, and we are prepared to take on the challenges--because we believe in the importance of this project.
