Art Local: Kansas City based vocal ensemble, Octarium, is going "local;" commissioning unaccompanied choral works from local composers.
Kansas City based Octarium (www.octarium.org) is planning a concert of new choral music by composers who are located in and around Kansas City, Missouri. There are many fine composers in the region but few are given the opportunity for area performances. Octarium would like to change that.
The current locavore trend encourages us to eat local, not only to support our local economies but to enjoy food that is fresh. With that in mind, we should also art local; support art being created in your own backyard; fresh art, new music. Octarium will commission unaccompanied choral works from local composers for a concert to take place in our 2011-2012 season. Already on board for this project is local composer Robert Pherigo, Missouri's Composer Laureate for 2010 (http://www.versesandvoices.org/missouri-composer-laureate-robert-pherigo.html).
A composer commission fee for an unaccompanied choral work is usually between $1,250 and $1,500. Octarium's funding goal of $7,500 will allow us to commission five new works and support five local composers.
Octarium is a 501c3 and all donations are tax-deductible.
