WE ARE FULLY FUNDED! Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign this far, however, we are not quite finished yet! Any extra funds donated until the end of our campaign will go towards an equity fund that will be used to help out people of color who want to pursue their dreams but financially cannot afford to. This may look like buying them some business cards, paying for them to have a website, or even sending them to an event that they feel will benefit them professionally.
The idea for this podcast came out of a desire and longing for more representation in the entrepreneurship world. I am in the industry of online entrepreneurship and online courses, where most of the biggest leaders are white. I came from the lifestyle blogging world where there are groups for people of color who are lifestyle bloggers, but not necessarily the same kinds of communities for entrepreneurs online or people who are interested in starting up their own businesses.
Empowered in Color is meant to do just that--to empower people of color to thrive in both business and in life while loving the skin that you're in. This podcast is also going to highlight entrepreneurs of color in different industries and different aspects of their journeys and expose listeners to businesses they can support as well. This podcast is meant to foster connections and be a place of positive representation.
Positive Representation Matters
For most people of color, you didn't really see people who looked like you in media or leadership positions growing up, and when you did, they were usually the "token" character or a horrible stereotype.
If you were anything like me, you probably wondered why your dolls or important characters in tv shows didn't look like you. You may have asked yourself if your immigrant family upbringing was normal. You may have even wished that you looked like anyone but yourself.
This is the core of Empowered in Color, and that is positive representation. As a society we are just now discovering the importance and power of positive representation, and we want to do the same when it comes to work. I want you to see other people working in different industries making a name for themselves and doing great things, and I want you to be reminded that it is possible for you too.
Equity and Complexion Connection
Besides representation, connections are another key component to Empowered in Color. Sometimes because of the backgrounds that people of color can come from, they may not be provided with or aware of certain resources or the value of networking. For people of color who are entrepreneurs, they sometimes have a harder time finding clients or finding people to work with who may have a better understanding of their background and who they are.
Empowered in Color strives to be a place to find people you can support or purchase products/services from marginalized groups. It strives to be a place where you can connect or collaborate with someone who looks like you. It strives to be a place where you can come into a community and not be "othered" for being who you are. It strives to celebrate the diversity and creativity of the people around us.
Resources to be Offered
The podcast will be the primary (and free) resource offered, but there are other resources (both free and paid) that I eventually want to include with Empowered in Color as well:
- A Facebook Group for entrepreneurs of color to connect to learn from and support and collaborate with each other
- An online directory of poc-owned businesses categorized by industry or niche
- Online Summits
- Online Courses surrounding Networking
- Connection nights for entrepreneurs of color to meet and mingle in person (will start in LA/Orange County but hope to expand to more cities as time goes on)
- Yearly or Bi-Annual Co-working retreats for people to relax and refresh but also have some time to get work done/brainstorm new ideas with people who have similar ideals and mindsets (will start in Southern California initially but hope to expand to more cities)
- More to come as time and money allow
Usage of Funds
These initial expenses are the minimum to get the podcast started and going ($1450 goal), and if the goal is met, stretch goals will be posted.
- Website, domain name, email
- Software (editing software, podcast hosting, etc)
- Hiring people to create a unique theme song and podcast art for the podcast
- Legal fees
- Miscellaneous fees (primarily Kickstarter fees)
Special thank yous to: my husband Darell (Filipino American) for taking photos and editing my video, Megan W (Navajo) for creating the Kickstarter cover art, and Jonny H (Black) for taking the photo used in the cover photo.
Let's Keep in Touch!
Risks and challenges
Funds: This is probably an obvious one. This podcast will be free, but running a podcast is not free. Without the funds, the production and launch of this podcast and overall brand can be delayed for months in order to gather up the amount necessary to launch the brand. Empowered in Color is something that I have had on my heart and mind for almost a year now and from conversations with numerous people from all different spheres, it would be awesome to get this resource out there as soon as possible. What better time than the new year?
Manpower: Currently, I am running everything myself with the exception of some video/photography help from my husband and (hoping to hire) two talented people to help create my podcast art and theme song. Besides that, I am emailing everyone, recording, and editing, and doing most of the marketing. With a day job, it can definitely be difficult to find the time to work on a project like this, but I am dedicated to helping people make the valuable connections they need and will be able to get it done as long as I have some accountability. I also hope to hire someone to help out with some of the tasks in the future, especially when we start hosting in-person events.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
