Some of you may have heard that we have discontinued the VR implementation for Among the Sleep. We made a full DK1 version but that made us realise our game didn’t make a good fit for VR.
A huge focus when creating Among the Sleep was to make the player feel like he or she was controlling a small child. To accomplish this we spent a lot of time on camera movement. We wanted to simulate the way children waggle when they walk, their perspective and movement when crawling. We made climbing animations simulating how small children climb, we made the player fall over occasionally when running because, you know, that happens to small children.
All of these techniques are essential to project the feeling of being a child to the player. They make the player feel small, fragile and vulnerable. But unfortunately they don’t work in VR. They can create motion sickness with the dissonance between your body and what you see, it feels forced, like someone is holding your head.
We are very sorry to disappoint those of you wanting a complete, high standard commercial VR-experience. As a young studio (we started developing Among the Sleep while we were still in school) we jumped at the opportunity to explore new tech and didn’t think about limitations. We have learned a lot in the years since then and as a studio we would much rather be honest with our players about our shortcomings and what we have learned than keep on stalling and promising stuff we know we can’t deliver. We thought we could do it, we thought it was a natural fit but we were wrong and we’re sorry.
We are now considering using assets from the game for a smaller and more focused VR-demo. A tight and focused experience tailored for VR. It will be a small part of the game, stand alone from the rest of the story, but a much better VR-experience than the original game forced into virtual reality.
We absolutely want to underline that this is the only stretch goal we are editing. You have gotten the DLC, you will get the commentary track and everyone that backed the relevant levels will get their physical rewards. Games, t-shirts, art books, and CDs will be delivered to you. The rewards are in production and we will give you the word ASAP when they are being shipped. We just have to apologize again for the time this is taking.
Ending with some good news! We recently won an award in Hamburg for Among the Sleep! You can read about it on the blog. This would not be possible without you, so thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts! <3
We have had some wonderful time off and we're ready to get back to work.
Are you missing any digital rewards? Fear no more! You should be able to access everything on Humble now. If you have any questions about that, send them a mail. If they can't answer then mail us :)
Cons and expos! Yay, we're going to have a booth at RTX in Austin next week (7.-9.)! :D We're also going to have a showcase of the Oculus Rift version of Among the Sleep at GamesCom in Cologne, at Thursday 6th. Find us at Unity's booth and try out some VR ^^
News round up We are of course still working on the physical rewards and we will message you again when we start sending them out :D
We're also still on for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release Q4.
Thank you for your continued patience and faith in us <3
Yes, we’re still alive! We’re so sorry about the lack of updates from us! We wanted to have somewhat concrete information for you before updating again. We have had communication challenges with both production companies we have used for the physical rewards and we felt we were letting you down.
We have now received the t-shirts! And they are beautiful <3 You will get your stuff this summer; CDs, artbook and physical copies of the game (which also includes a game manual, all the improvements since launch, and the free DLC). We’ll send new updates when everything’s arrived and then when we send it out.
Among the Sleep on consoles
In other news we are bringing Among the Sleep to Xbox One later this year! No worries, PlayStation 4 is of course still on, and we’ll be releasing both this fall/winter. We don’t have the dates yet, and you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime we’re fully focused on delivering the best console version we can! Follow us on Twitter and Facebook for smaller updates!
If you are at E3 this year you can find us in both Microsoft’s and Sony’s catalogues! (omg omg!) Though we’re not there physically I’m afraid.
You supported us to make an award winning game!
It’s been over a year since the release of Among the Sleep now and we feel proud of the game you helped us make. In the past month we have won two prizes for Among the Sleep. First it was Best Artistic Achievement at Nordic Game Conference in Malmö and then Game of the Year at the Indie Showcase at Momocon in Atlanta! You can read more about it at the blog.
And since we’re talking about cons, we will be attending Develop i Brighton 15. og 16. July, then GamesCom in Cologne 6. - 9. August, and then Pax Prime 28. - 31. august. We hope to see you there!
Want more horror?
To round this off we want to recommend checking out the game Through the Woods by our good friends Antagonist. They now have their own Kickstarter and as many of you probably know it’s been harder and harder to get a successful Kickstarter campaign. The market is tough, there’s scammers and there’s tonnes of new ideas every day. We believe in these guys and we wish for them to be successful, so please check them out if another Norwegian horror game is to your liking! :D
Where we are now, current status: First of all, we would like to apologize for the far too long quiet period since the last update. We’ve had our hands full for a long time now, but we can assure you that we have been working hard, and that we have every intention to continue delivering everything we have promised to you wonderful people :)
We want to get you all updated on what’s up with the Kickstarter rewards, so let’s dive into it!
All of our digital goods are done, ready and shipped to Humble, who kindly helps out distribution them! This means that, as soon as everything is sorted out on Humble’s side of the internet, which hopefully is in a short period of time, you’ll be able to get all of the digital rewards there. When it is ready, you should receive an email with info on how to obtain them.
Digital Copy of the Game - Everybody should have received a digital copy of the game through Humble, which grants access to the game on Steam. Emails regarding this was sent to your Kickstarter emails around the day we launched. If you did not receive your email, please try the Humble resender. And if this still does not work, please send us an email to email@example.com.
For the rest of the digital rewards, the following applies: Emails regarding the different rewards will be sent out to everyone.
Digital Soundtrack- Can be accessed through Humble within the next few days. Keep a lookout in your kickstarter mailbox!
Digital Signed Poster- Can be accessed through Humble within the next few days. Keep a lookout in your kickstarter mailbox!
Digital Signed Art Book - Can be accessed through Humble within the next few days. Keep a lookout in your kickstarter mailbox!
Access to Alpha test- The alpha was launched August 30th 2013, and we got lots of valuable feedback from the backers who tested it! Cheers again :)
Your name in the credits- See the special thanks section in the credits to find your name :D
Tier specific rewards:
Digital Signed Card - This has been completed and should soon be accessible through Humble for those eligible. An email will be sent to your Kickstarter email.
BABYSITTER tier rewards -For those of you fantastic people that decided to help us out in such a tremendous way by backing the game with the BABYSITTER tier, the promised rewards are coming, but there’s a few things we still need from you! We need some photos as references to the drawings that will be made, and portraits to hang up in our office. We’ve had a few responses on the last email we sent out regarding this, but we don’t have you all up there yet. We really want to see your beautiful faces! We will contact the remaining regarding the specifics of what we need soon.
A while back, we were in touch with a manufacturer for the all the physical rewards. Long story short, after we’d designed and sent them all the designs it turned out they were over capacity, and we eventually decided to switch to a different manufacturer. Right now, the status is that everything is ready for production with the new manufacturer, and we’re awaiting their delivery.
It is super important to us that you get what you ordered, and we want to bring you the physical goods as quickly as possible. In retrospect we realize that the physical rewards could have been prioritized above other things, such as stretch goals, and we could have been a lot better at communicating the status with you guys, and for that we apologize.
On behalf of the whole team, we would again like to give you all a deep, warm and loving thank you for backing this project. It was a dream of ours to finish the game, and we could never have done it without your help. We’re very proud of what we have created, and it is all based on the support of you fantastic people.
Stretch goals, like the free DLC, have definitely been the biggest time consumer in the time since launch. From the feedback we have gotten we now understand that we should have prioritized all the digital/physical rewards first, so sorry to those who are eagerly awaiting this!
But let’s recap what has been delivered, and what we’re still working on:
DLC- The free DLC was developed along with all backers who wanted to participate, and launched last november. We’re happy with how it turned out, and that we got to focus a bit more on your parent’s relationship, and the familys history. It continues the creepy atmosphere from the main game, and we really hope you liked what you saw.
Thanks to all the backers that took part, and shared their feedback and ideas with us!
Oculus Rift support- Among the Sleep is one of the first games to be playable from start to finish with the DK1, and we learned quite a lot from working with the technology. It really helps to put you in the shoes of a tiny vulnerable child in a big scary world.
Currently we’re also working on support for the DK2, with positional tracking and higher resolution. This has proven to be a challenge to implement for many reasons, which we will write more about later. The DK2 implementation is out for beta testing later this week, and we hope that all you Rift lovers will help us make this the best experience possible!
Commentary track- Right before Christmas we started recording the Among the Sleep commentary track, with our thoughts from ‘behind the scenes’. We had a blast thinking back on the 3-4 years the game has been in development, and hope that those who are interested in hearing the process behing the game will enjoy this as soon as it’s patched in. We expect to have this live during the next 1-2 months.
Digital backer rewards are done, uploaded and (hopefully) soon available. We are close to production and shipping of physical rewards. Sorry for being slow. You guys are awesome. Thank you for your patience :)
We’ve been working on this extra little bit of the game since release this summer. The free DLC contains a whole new chapter, which is meant to be played after the main game is completed (as it expands a bit on the main story). So for those of you who’ve finished the game and long for more: enjoy!
It should update to your copy of the game automatically, and you can access it from the chapter selection screen in the main menu :)
As always we’re continuing to develop the PS4-version of the game, and adding support for new features (such as the Oculus DK2-support). We’ll also continue optimising the game in general (like the IPD/FOV-issues on Oculus DK1 sets) and fixing all other bugs we find :)
For those of you reading this far (who ever does that?), I can only assume you’re above averagely interested in our work! Maybe you’d like to work with us instead? Check out this opening for a full-time programmer! :D
