About

Premise

You are a student at a magical school with a penchant for potions. Use your skills to earn the best grade possible by the end of the semester, or sabotage your classmates so they can't get ahead of you...

Game Rules & Card List

The goal of the game is to have as many points as you can get by the end of the game; each potion has a point value. [...] Extra copies of potions do not grant points - so make sure you have a variety of potions in your hand at the end! Every 10 gold coins you own at the end also count as 1 point towards your final score.

[...] Each player begins the game with 10 gold coins, and gain an extra 2 gold coins at the beginning of their turn except for their first - this is called the “scholarship”.

On each player’s turn, they may take the following actions in any order: interact with the market up to three times (buying and/or selling cards), brewing a potion once, and using a card in their hand once. If a player hasn’t interacted with the market yet, they may instead choose to interact with the dark market, but doing so automatically ends their turn, whether they purchase something or not.

Remember the golden rule: card text overrides game rules.

The Red Ingredient

Description

Potion School is a party game for 2-4 players, which usually takes about half an hour to play.

And it's fun.

The game is already finished, having gone through the full development cycle of playtesting, tweaking and more playtesting. However, it'll never really be complete without an official release.

The one thing I'm missing is art; that's where you come in. I need your help to commission the art in it's entirety. I've always made games on a shoestring budget - it's kind of my motto. I've even used a piece of torn cardboard as a game board in the past - that's how dire my funds are. The only way to afford the amazing artwork of Evan Hartshorn (who has already provided the sample cards throughout) is if enough people are willing to chip in a few dollars towards my goal.

Cost Breakdown

Let's assume every backer wants a copy of the game, so they'll select the lowest pledge that grants the game. I'm also guessing that there will be 100 backers. All of the numbers here are in USD until noted.

  • (35 illustrations) x ($40 per illustration) = $1400 for illustrations
  • (100 cards + 5 bonus cards) x ($0.06 per card) + ($1.85 per deck box) = $8.15 per printed game
  • ($238.16 postage to Australia) + (8.15 per game) * (100 backers) = 1053.16 to get to my house
  • ($55.50 for 100 outbound parcel sachels) + ($1053.16 house) = $1108.66 total from print to delivery
  • ($1400 illustrations) + ($1108.66 delivery) + (10% emergency wiggle room) + (10% tax) + (10% kickstarter fee) = $2972.06 goal
  • ~($2972.06 goal) = $4390.77 AUD = ~4400 AUD goal
  • ($4400 AUD goal) / (100 backers) = 44 AUD pledge

The lowest reasonable pledge that can deliver a copy of the game, accounting for the fluctuating conversion rate between Australian and American dollars, is $44 AUD.

The Blue Ingredient

Delivery Date

Since we'll be waiting on Evan's artwork before moving forward, we estimate it'll take at most a month to finalize the artwork and typeset the cards. Then, it will take about a month for a test print to arrive at either my or Evan's homes, so that we can inspect it for any flaws. Assuming nothing has gone wrong with the printing, we will officially send out the forms for backers to place the orders for their complementary copies.

Once this is done, it may take up to 10 days for the service we are using (Drive Thru Cards) to print and ship the games to me, about a month to arrive here, and then a month (give or take a day or two of repackaging, to add the rulebook) to arrive at the most distant backers.

So in total, if everything goes smoothly, our estimates put it in your hands within 5 months. In this instance, I will be using the 50% additional budget rule (see below), and extend that time frame to about six months.

Stretch Goals

The goal of this kickstarter is to simply deliver a quality product, and to release that product for sale. However, the following options would be an interesting addition to the game:

  • $6,000 AUD - Optional Character Cards: 4 optional rules cards packaged with the base game that give each player an interesting twist to gameplay. The game will need to be thoroughly tested with these new cards, so a slight delay to the delivery date my occur.
  • $12,000 AUD - Optional Expansion Cards: Development of a set of additional gameplay cards will begin once the rewards have been delivered. I can't guarantee this expansion will be delivered, but I would be interested in exploring some ideas that didn't make it into the base game.

Risks Involved

Under normal circumstances, game developers should always add 50% to a budget to account for emergencies like broken computers, lost code, employees out of action, etc. That's unreasonable for a first kickstarter project, so instead I'm going with a 10% wiggle room amount - I've also rounded some numbers up, but the amount rounded is fairly small and won't really impact the emergency fund. Still, there will always be the chance that I simply can't deliver due to financial problems.

Finally, there may be production, printing or shipping delays that are out of my control. In this event, we will ask you to be patient, but will keep you updated.
