Go Digital or Be Left Behind!
For the past 100 years, movies have been printed on film, but now, Hollywood studios and distributors have announced that by spring of 2013, 35mm film will no longer be produced and will be replaced entirely by digital movies provided on hard drives.
All theaters in the U.S. are being forced to upgrade to digital, or close their doors. While we've shown most movies on 35mm film, The Kress has also projected movies digitally since we opened in 2008, but the equipment we have -- while completely adequate for our small theater -- is not the standard now required to continue to show quality, first-run films. The cost of converting to this new digital standard will close the doors of many small theaters nationwide, so we are appealing to the community to help fund it through Kickstarter.
Many small theaters have already mounted successful Kickstarter campaigns to raise these funds. In nearby Fort Collins, Colorado, for example, the Lyric Cinema Cafe concluded a successful Kickstarter campaign this summer, raising more than its $150,000 goal to outfit two auditoriums.
Other communities have rallied to support their indie theaters, and The Kress is hopeful that, with your support, we will be able to continue to bring independent films to Greeley and the surrounding region for many years to come.
In addition to remaining open, The Kress and its patrons will benefit in some other ways with the new-and-improved equipment:
• No more damaged and scratched films
• New digital sound system
• Limited-release movies distributed more quickly
And exactly what will this money buy? If we meet our goal, we'll buy and install the following equipment:
• DCI-Compliant 2K Digital Projector
• Digital Cinema Media Server
• Digital Surround Sound System
• Lenses and Bulbs
• Installation and Training
If we meet or exceed our goal, any additional funds will be used to purchase spare parts, replace or repair damaged furniture, and upgrade kitchen equipment. Kickstarter requires that for any money to change hands, we must meet or exceed our goal.
More About The Kress Cinema & Lounge
The Kress Cinema & Lounge, located in downtown Greeley, Colorado in the historically renovated Kress Building, is Greeley's only independent movie theater. Opened in 2008, The Kress is a memorable experience for every guest with a beautiful theater, full-service restaurant and bar, and intimate Art Deco lounges.
The Theater Auditorium
In our auditorium, the high, decorative plaster ceilings create a large viewing space with historic ambiance for first-run, independent movies in addition to classic, cult, and alternative content. Small tables, booths and bar seating mingle with traditional tiered theater seats to accommodate comfortable viewing and dining.
Our Restaurant/Bar and Lounges
The full bar and restaurant serve the audience before, during, and after shows and are open to the public whether viewing the film or not.
More than just a movie theater, The Kress hosts holiday parties, concerts, weddings, receptions, business meetings, live comedy, community forums, fundraisers, and weekly live music. The Kress is a truly unique center for culture and entertainment in Northern Colorado.
Risks and challenges
And what happens if The Kress doesn't meet its goal? If we don't succeed -- well, it's been a great four years serving you, and The Kress will continue to show films on 35mm for as long as possible, saying goodbye sometime in 2013.
If we succeed with your help, we'll immediately proceed with obtaining and installing the new digital equipment, so that The Kress Cinema & Lounge can continue to provide the community with the diverse programming and service our customers have come to expect.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
