About this project
Kosmium is a competitive board game for 2 to 6 players who race to build cosmic highways through the Solar System, while manipulating their luck and opponents. It takes around 15 minutes per player and combines mechanics like bluffing, hand management, point to point movement and route building.
The game was originally inspired by 2 Sci-Fi novels: “The Game-Players of Titan” by Philip K. Dick and “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. If you ever wanted to fly a ship chaotically through the Universe, now is your chance!
You compete against each other at navigating your ship through the outer asteroid belt to collect minerals and then transform those into pieces of highway at the Space Stations from where you also deploy them.
Be careful: Kosmium is a ruthless company and to test your skills they might send you coordinates where you lose minerals! Don't panic: with each instruction (playing card) you get a special power to use when necessary. You can choose to disobey their coordinates and navigate to richer spots by bluffing, but be advised: the pilot behind you can contest your move and try to steal your minerals.

Jonathan from Roll for Crit considers that Kosmium “it’s a strategy game but it also has that aspect of a psychological party game”, due to bluffing and he also thinks there’s a good amount of variation regarding the ways of obtaining victory points.
Tom from Never Board Gaming says about the bluffing mechanism that “It’s definitely unique, something I haven’t seen before”. He also points out that “if you are a better liar and can manipulate your friends at the table, you have a better chance, but you’re not going to definitely crush.”
Aaron settles it: “If you ever wanted to feel like Darth Vader or Dr. Evil and blow up things, then try this.”
David from EverythingBoardGames.com finds the artwork appealing and fit with the space theme: "the celestial bodies are beautifully done, and all the small design elements are aesthetically pleasing and informative."
He concludes in the final thoughts that "the combination of special abilities, road-building, resource-gathering and bluffing makes this a unique game".

Flaviu, from Natiunea Jucatoare, also made a video preview of the game, but in Romanian, for our fans from home!
Name 1 ability: choose 1 ability from the current 12 ability tokens and submit to us via email 2 new name proposals. These can be formed up to 3 words and a total of 16 characters; have a good resonance and pronunciation in English; at least 1 word must fit the Sci-Fi theme of the game. Additional conditions might apply.
Your picture in the game: Provide us a picture of you (or of a person you have approval from to use it) and our team of illustrators will make an artwork piece based on it. The artwork will be placed on 1 Pilot ID token, in every copy of Kosmium. You will also receive a high quality digital copy of the artwork.
The story of your pilot: provide us a series of words based on which we will create a story of the pilot you gave us the picture for. The story is our exclusive creation, will have up 120 words and will be included in a dedicated page in the rulebook in every copy of Kosmium. Additional conditions might apply.

Kosmium is now over 90% finished, both in game-play and graphics. We want your feedback to complete the game in the most appealing way! As the creator of Kosmium, I am now working full-time on this project and I will be here to answer your questions and further craft this game together!
The closer we are getting to the funding goal, the more additional play-test we are going to run for perfectly balancing the current stats of the game and the additional ones we have for the stretch goals.
We will manage the customs, importing, VAT, and fulfillment duties for the countries mentioned above. If you are located in a zone without friendly shipping, then it is possible that your reward will be subject to taxes, customs or other charges.
We are offering a significant global discount on shipping Kosmium through this Kickstarter. See the table below for a breakdown of shipping expenses by destination. You will see these shipping charges automatically added to your pledge through Kickstarter.
The game can be played by 2 to 6 players (ages 14+), although it works best with 4 and more. For a detailed presentation watch the video below and read the upcoming sections:
A player’s turn has 3 Phases:
• Phase 1: use Phase 1 Powers & Abilities
: if on a Wormhole you can use it
• Phase 2: must do one of these two actions: I) Draw a New Card and move your Ship
II) Build Highway if on a Space Station
: use Phase 2 Powers & Abilities
• Phase 3: if on a Space Station: collect 1 Energy Cube if available
: buy or sell 1 Ability Token if available
: use Phase 3 Powers & Abilities
Basically, a player must do one of the 2 actions from Phase 2 and the rest are optional and dependent on the current location of the player's ship.
Powers are used only once and then discarded; a player can have up to 4 cards in hand at the end of a turn. Abilities are permanent; a player can have up to 2 abilities at any point during a game.
Each time you draw a card, in order to move your ship, you can bluff how far you go, but also can be challenged by another player.
Why would a player want to bluff? Because almost half of the values on the board are negative! If you land on a positive value, you receive that amount of minerals from the Bank, but if you land on negative, you pay that to the Bank (to be renamed Cosmic Supply)!
Each time you draw a card, only you can see the numbers on it and you must ask the Pilot behind you for permission to move. You declare a number, which ca be the one on the card or not (ranging from 1 to 8). The questioned Pilot must answer with "OK, move!" or "Bluff!", if he/she thinks you are honest or lying. There are always minerals at stake: both parties can win or loose some.
Here's one side of the Player Aid Card that summarizes how bluffing works:
Don’t worry if you can’t make a great poker-face! There are powers and items to use for turning your luck around and your opponents can never be sure what your strategy is.
Each player will start building their highways from different Space Stations, but they will intersect with each other at least around the central area of the board. White pieces can be used by everybody, while colored ones, just by the players owning them.
You can place 2 pieces of highway per turn, only by continuing a highway that is linked to the Space Station where you are located.
To complete your mission, the highway must meet all of the following conditions:
• Connects at least 1 common piece on one side of each of the 3 celestial bodies of your mission.
• Has continuity so that it goes one way
• Has sections of no more than 4 consecutive common pieces. This makes the use of the 4 individual pieces mandatory.
Placing 1 common piece costs 50 minerals that you pay to the Bank. The common ones can be placed only on the white-dotted hexagonal network. Additionally, you can blow up a celestial body to place 2 individual pieces of highway inside its area, but you must pay higher prices.
Kosmium Studio was recently founded in Bucharest, Romania with the primary purpose of publishing Kosmium – the board game and hopefully many more to come!
I am Florin Bărăscu, the designer behind this project which I have been working on for 1 year and a half. I have a Master’s Degree in Design and working as an Interior and Graphic Design freelancer. Most of last year was dedicated to learning game design and mechanics and applying the knowledge to many versions of Kosmium.
Helping me in the initial development of the project was Maria Miu, a fellow Design graduate. You can see part of her work in the illustrations of the mineral cards.
Additional work in various fields of the game was performed by numerous friends with specific know-hows: Aişe Iusmen (text editing), Eli Lester (rules editing), Răzvan Bogdan (game mechanics adviser), Bianca Vrînceanu (illustrations), Bogdan Mosorescu (videos) plus many more friends and play-testers.
Since we are new to the industry, we have a collaboration contract with NSKN Games. They have successfully funded all their 10 tabletop projects here on Kickstarter, in the last 3 years. They are sharing with us their experience and know-how regarding running a realistic project here and more importantly, manufacturing the game afterwards and managing the logistics involved.
NSKN Games was not involved in designing Kosmium and is not responsible in any way for the decisions that Kosmium Studio takes.
For manufacturing, we already developed a great relationship with Whatz Games from China and since they are the main producer for NSKN’s games, it should all work well for us too. Whatz Games manufactures premium quality games like 7 Wonders Duel, King of Tokyo, Welcome to the Dungeon etc.
For fulfillment and shipping worldwide, we plan to use the services of GamesQuest from UK. Their track record is great and so is their customer service. Additional fulfillment companies might be used, depending on final backers count and locations.
Risks and challenges
As it is our first crowdfunding and board game project, we did our best to learn from the finest in the industry. We have been planning this project for more than a year now and we feel ready to bring it to life.
Additionally, having the NSKN team as mentors is an assurance for you backers that once this project is funded, the game will be manufactured and delivered at high standards.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding the project and your rewards. We want your feedback to craft Kosmium in the best way for our backers!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
