Day 8: What Fits? Part 1: Species, Tech, & Upgrade Trayz

Happy Wednesday, all!

One of the top questions we have heard is will everything in the campaign fit in the box & custom Game Trayz, and we are happy to share that the answer is “YES!”

Let’s start with the Player, or Species, Trayz:

Color Not Final - Render Only
Color Not Final - Render Only
Color Not Final - Render Only
Color Not Final - Render Only

This tray will fit all the things belonging to a Species: All its ships, population cubes, Influence discs, Starting Sector, Ambassador tiles, Colony ship tiles, Storage markers, and Summary card. In the Galactic Counselor Pledge level instead of storing your Alien ships, your Human ships can be stored in the player tray if you wish.

Here are a couple of examples of the player area setup. The resource board is double-sided for horizontal or vertical viewing!

Tech Tray

The Tech Tray will have the round track and have a place for the round marker. This tray will also hold up to 4 of each tech in the designated spaces, 2 for each rare tech. These are drawn throughout the game, so this is not a storage tray, it is an organizer for during gameplay. For those of you who have the Game Trayz for New Dawn, you already know how nice this is to have for passing around the table. (and why we felt it was a must for Second Dawn!)

Upgrade Tray (w/lid!)

The Upgrade tray will not only organize all your Ship Part tiles by type but also stores them between games making for significantly easier setup. There is even a space for up to 12 extra parts! This tray is perfect for passing around the table, and the included lid will make sure everything stays in place inside the box when you’re done.

A big thank you to Noah at Game Trayz for sending over these updated renders to share!

Next update we’ll talk more about the Base and Table Trayz. Stay tuned!

 Thanks, everyone!

      Love the trayz!

I genuinely hope you'll find a solution that will allow me to store all the expansion content in the base box. I really dislike having to put expansion boxes on my shelves, especially for games like Eclipse where I'm rarely, if ever, going to play *without* expansions. GameTrayz inlays are only as good as what they'll store, and if they can't store everything I'm going to pay for, they become more of a frustration than a benefit.

In fact, I just yesterday encountered this with the GameTrayz insert for Wasteland Express Delivery Service, an insert that's phenomenal except that it doesn't have room for sleeved cards. Which means there's an entire part of the design I'm just going to throw away.

If we have a fantastic insert with all these great trays that are expressly designed to fit well in the box and speed up setup, but then there are tiles and chits and extra ships that just have nowhere to go or end up stuffed into baggies on top of that otherwise phenomenal insert, you've ended up defeating the purpose of the insert and tarnishing the effort of the people who designed it.

I don't think a single person in this campaign - including people who are only pledging for the base game - would have a problem with extra space being added to the inserts to accommodate expansion content. Please try to work this out.

@Craig, I believe the lids for the species trays are the top sections that hold the cubes; these hold all the other components inside the tray. Adding and extra lid on top of that would increase the size of the tray and reduce the amount of space in the box.

Is there any way to differentiate between the race trays without having to open them to see which color is inside? Since we are tying the starter hex to the trays its not like we can just play the color we want.

Really?! So the actual answer is NO? You're not even going to supply a basic storage solution for those 108, completely pointless ships that you're charging $50 for? (worlds afar is apparently free) could you not have put your money and recourses into making that plastic into another/bigger game tray to store future (or current for that matter) content? Or use that money to make more tiles or species boards (which we could still use the same ships for) or maybe just discount the product or the shipping or something. One of the biggest set up problems isn't even fixed. Why the cubes can't be stored in thier places with lids is beyond me.the storage trays litteraly only hold things you need to take out of them and put into place which is identical to taking them out of baggies...
I've backed over 30 games on kickstarter, this is the single most deceptive campaign I've ever been apart of. I have never felt the need to comment let a lone pull a pledge but this is rediculous.
Such a shame because I own and love the original game and was so enthusiastic about this one. Such a let down...
In conclusion, if supply all of the content (minus those rediculous human ships) and a box with trays to store it all and I'll be back. The new edition looks amazing, the marketing is just the worst.

Hi, will the summary cards in the player trayz fit if they are in sleeves ?

    7. Craig Tubbs on

I've just re-read the campaign page and it says the species trayz come with lids. That will stop the population cubes moving around, right?

    8. Craig Tubbs on

@Kolossal Thanks for the reply and for updating the FAQs! That's interesting, so really we're to read the latest update as everything in the campaign related specifically to the species will fit either in the Game trayz or elsewhere in the box. I'm cool with that, and I hope the next storage related update addresses the rest - what other stuff fits in the trayz, what from the GC pledge level is there room for in the base box outside of the trayz, what (if anything) has to be stored separately?

    9. Craig Tubbs on

      FAQ has been updated:

The base game box will hold all of the base game content. Some additional content, such as extra ships and tiles can fit in the base game box but will come in an additional box upon arrival. Game Trayz provided with the base game will fit all the things belonging to a Species: All its ships, population cubes, Influence discs, Starting Sector, Ambassador tiles, Colony ship tiles, Storage markers, and Summary card.

The player trays look know, but I can't believe there isn't a clear cover to allow cube storage where they are needed for gameplay. I have clear acrylic trays that do that now. Feels like a bit if a step backwards

Same question, how to store the other ship, will there be a tray for the expansion as well?

    13. Sascha Heib on

So the Player Trayz Store either the Alien Ships or the Human Ships. Where am i storing the other one?

@Carl +1 on the thank you - it's the update a lot of us wanted.

I love how the parts of the trays that hold the ships have the actual ship blueprints on them -- nice touch!

@Craig: Agreed, it would be good for them to clarify. I think "everything in the campaign" really means everything, but there's been a lot of confusion on this point so it would be good to get specifics. Hopefully part 2 answers this definitively, but just in case:
@Kolossal: Can we consolidate everything into the base game box and toss out the Worlds Afar box? Or will there be anything that will not fit?

Where will the other ship minis that aren’t stored in the species tray be stored? Will they be stored in baggies in the base box or will they have to be stored in the expansion box or something else?

Do each of the trays have some sort of lid?

    21. Craig Tubbs on

I love the Game trayz but I am so confused now. The FAQ says:

"The base game box will hold all of the base game content. Any additional content will need to be stored in the additional boxes for their respective content such as Human Ships or World's Afar."

But this update says (in capital letters!) that the box and trayz will hold everything. They seem at odds with each other?

Really hoping that the FAQ is just out of date but don't want to get my hopes up too much...

    22. Connell Miller on

Sooooo... when do we get Part 2? (Not to sound ungrateful, you’ve just put me in suspense!)

    23. Josh on

While it's a nice feature that the tray holds the population cubes, it's a missed opportunity to improve setup time by not including a way to store them already in the track. This method still requires players to take the 33+ population cubes and carefully place them around each of the three circles.

I guess the first setup step will still be for each player to empty the contents of their tray on the table and then reorganize it. I can already do that much cheaper with a baggie and it will take less space in the box.

[...] will everything in the campaign fit in the box & custom Game Trayz [...] the answer is “YES!”

Isn't everything in the campaign the same as all GC pledge content?

So the storage tray for the tech will fit all of the stretch goals and Worlds Afar content?

    26. amlloyd on

But base box won't fit expansion which is a huge miss.
