A NEW GIANT MONSTER STORY
In April 2011 Keith Foster, Rory Smith and Lance Pilgrim had an idea to create a new, original giant monster (kaiju) comic. At the time there was very little out there in terms of giant monster stories and they wanted to contribute with a story of their own (plus, there can never be enough stories about giant monsters). Kodoja was born, the first issue coming out in June 2012.
The two years since that first issue came out have been busy - Keith, Lance and Rory have worked hard spreading the word on Kodoja at conventions and online while creating as much new content as their schedule allowed. Kodoja #5 came out in May 2014, wrapping up ‘Terror Mountain Showdown’, the first storyline of the Kodoja Project.
The story centers on Kodoja, a kaiju-sized bio-weapon hibernated three years by a special division of the government (Special Weapons) for being too powerful. This morning, Kodoja awakened for no reason from hibernation, cutting a swath of destruction doing so – and now Special Weapons scrambles to stop the unstoppable weapon they helped create.
MORE MONSTERS, MORE DESTRUCTION
Two giant monsters are better than one! As the world scrambles to stop Kodoja, a second monster appears on the scene, tying in with some HP Lovecraft-style strangeness bubbling up around the world. A few people snap emotionally...because something is coming. Both monsters head to Terror Mountain, leading up to a massive monster vs monster battle - a fight among the skyscrapers that will *only* level the city... if we're lucky.
A PROPER TREATMENT
The Kodoja creative team is really proud of our story; so far, the comic series has reached the world via short-run printers, printing in small quantities to keep costs down. The book is entirely self-funded/published - it’s been a lot of effort keeping the Kodoja story going but it’s been worth it. We’ve also self-financed tables at conventions and the travel required to spread the word.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to put the whole story together in one place, and do so in a high-quality package. The package is this graphic novel - an entire story under one cover, collected in a hardcover book.
NOT JUST COMICS
In addition to writing Kodoja, Keith is in the band Big Pimp Jones, who recorded two albums to accompany Kodoja. The musical style is ‘giant monster funk’ – a mix the funk fans of Big Pimp Jones know with the dark orchestral Godzilla scores of Akira Ifukube. This comic has a soundtrack, called "Kodoja: Terror Mountain Showdown"!
The original soundtrack was released on RecordBreakin Music; for this campaign we created a special version of the soundtrack with extra tracks. In addition to writing Kodoja, Keith is in the band Big Pimp Jones, who recorded two albums to accompany Kodoja. THE MONEY TRAIL
How does your donation help this project become a reality? The $4,666 goal covers the cost of printing the minimum required quantity of graphic novels + expected postage. That’s it; all we want is to print this book the right way and give it a proper presentation!
Risks and challenges
Thankfully, 95% of the work for this Graphic Novel is done – 110+ pages of story complete and enough art to provide bonus content everyone will enjoy. That said, the main challenge will be the timeline – January delivery means December completion and that means extra art, more story and book design in two short months. We’ll have our work cut out for us but are excited to put more work into this.
Other challenges exist too – the team will need to keep backers updated and coordinate schedules to make sure the backers get their perks on time for donating. But while the entire team is ready to make this project a reality, only your donation can make this happen. Please help us tell our giant monster story with high-quality interiors inside a sturdy, awesome-looking hardcover book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
