About

KING OF AMERICA

‘King of America’ is a new opera by composer Amber Priestley & writer Bob Cryer.

KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

As part of our larger Arts Council application, we are fundraising a one off research and development presentation of parts of the work at Wilton's Music Hall on Monday February 12th, 2018. We are not only inviting friends and family to join us, but also potential investors, collaborators and producing partners. Please help us reach our target so we can begin part one of a dynamic research and development programme.

BACKGROUND

The opera takes its inspiration from an obscure footnote in a biography about Charles Edward Stuart, the eighteenth century adventurer and grandson of James II, who is perhaps better known as ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’. The footnote suggests that in 1782, when Charles was in his sixties and living in Florence, he was offered the throne of America by George Washington. It assumes that the founding fathers of America were discussing many forms of government for their fledgling nation before the republic became enshrined. The exiled Stuart family of Great Britain were the natural alternatives to the Hanoverians. We imagine, through the fevered dreams of Charles himself, just what that America would look like and how his installation as King would heal forty year old wounds. It seems this alternate reality is worth exploring, given the events of 2016 on both sides of the Atlantic, and the debate that has followed concerning redefined national identities. Are we finally witnessing a new King of America?

RESEARCH

We undertook two weeks of workshops with the MA students at the Central School of Speech and Drama in order to grapple with the themes and ideas of the piece. From this, Amber managed to secure promises of involvement from high quality musicians and singers to devote a week of their time to test the viability of our work.

YOUR MONEY

Opera is the synthesis of many different practitioners and as a result cannot be initiated alone. We need these funds to remunerate not just myself and Amber, but also the other professionals helping us achieve our vision. We will work with them through to a completed 20 minute version of the work. We’ll therefore need instrumentalists and singers flexible and dynamic enough in their work to examine both. This is obviously something difficult to schedule on a smaller budget.

THE FUTURE

Following our night at Wilton's, we will apply to the Arts Council to fund a full length version of the work. Hopefully the interest that we will attract in February 2018 will provide us with the necessary investment, producing partners and sponsors to mount a domestic production and then tour the opera internationally.

Risks and challenges

Firstly, it's important to say that if we raise the funds, there is nothing to stop us mounting the evening and distributing the rewards. This is despite the fact that there are always risks and challenges when staging opera, given the usual costs involved. However, we feel we've mitigated most of these by stripping the piece back to just twenty minutes and focusing on the quality of artist involvement in the sparsest way possible. If we do not raise the funds we need, it will unfortunately mean that the evening cannot go ahead. This is not the end for King of America as we intend to cover this period by simultaneously applying for our Arts Council grant and moving the date.
