KNORK was originally founded with the intention of creating a hand-forged line of stainless steel flatware with an improved design and functionality, made for how people naturally eat.
Our avid fans have been requesting a more sustainable and earth-conscious option that just works better than what's currently available in the reusable and disposable cutlery realm. We accepted that challenge & began our search for a material option to fit the bill!
Today, the majority of the plastic that we throw into landfills finds its way into our oceans, disrupting marine life and the delicate balance of the aquatic ecosystem.
We wanted something durable and resilient enough to maintain the KNORK design integrity, but more environmentally friendly than regular plastic- which could potentially sit in a landfill for eons before degrading or breaking down.
What we found was Astrik: Made from PLA (poly lactic acid - sugar cane starch 90%) and bamboo fiber (10%), this eco-friendly and responsibly sourced material provides a workable, multi-functional + sustainable alternative to harmful one-use plastic utensils.
The combination of clever design and a dishwasher-safe, durable, and 2 year compost-able material was exactly what we had been looking for, and the Eco line was born.
On-the-go dining calls for portable accessories, so we came up with this handy carrying case that fits the new Eco fork and spoon as well as some of our original stainless pieces!
With a clever bamboo-look design that pays homage to the Astrik material it's made from, you can easily take your dirty utensils home to wash them up in the dishwasher-case and all!
Our dream is to pair our ingenious KNORK designs with this remarkable Astrik resin material to create a brand new, seriously cool, earth-conscious line of products that encourage and promote sustainability during every dining experience.
If you love food and eating as much as we do, you'll totally get that the one constant of American style eating is the natural born habit of people to tip forks on their sides to cut through foods that it's not necessarily normal to reach for a knife to eat. Think waffles, pancakes, chicken, burritos, coney dogs, etc. (Side note: now we're hungry.)
We've thinned and improved the tines, and added a platform right where your index finger typically rests when doing the aforementioned side-tipping action. These help the user to rock through and cut most foods without reaching for a knife, and the contoured handle fits comfortably in most hands and creates an ergonomic balance.

As more stringent material regulations and standards are put in place to regulate the damaging effects of single-use plastics, Eco will provide an affordable, functional, and conscious alternative to a myriad of users.
Schools and airlines find KNORK to be a safer alternative to knives because of the built-in rocking ability to cut thru most foods. The rounded tines and beveled edge also creates a scoop for corn, rice, beans, and other non-liquids to be picked up with ease.
Eco pieces will fit many specific niche market opportunities where the functionality encourages creative freedom for chefs in environments where use of a knife isn't feasible.
Knork Eco offers a solution to companies who are mission-driven with ingraining sustainability into their brand and where one-time use plastics are no longer an option.
KNORK is perfect for multi-tasking, on the go eating-think desk lunches or cocktail parties where the ultimate challenge is to hold your drink in one hand while trying to eat with the other.

After launch, the carrying case will be available for purchase both by itself as a featured retail SKU, as well as with the forks and spoons as a separate item. If you are a backer that solely receives the utensils via Kickstarter, have no fear-you can definitely get the case by itself after its release!
NOTE: the rewards with the carry case will follow a different timeline on the shipping, with an estimated August ship date. We are at the very early stages of the design and development process in comparison to the utensils, so their ETA is a bit later.
Some rewards tiers feature limited edition versions of the KNORK x Bamboozle compost bin and the flatware/cutlery tray. The unique, limited-run collaboration pieces will come in a cool sagey-grey color that's complementary of the Eco line, and will feature a co-branded logo back-stamped on each item.
The stainless steel fork and spoon that fit into the new carrying case will feature a limited edition "Eco" stamp, so you know just which pieces to reach for when packing your lunch!
Bonus-our retail packaging will be biodegradable kraft material - and zero plastic!
We have been working with our manufacturer to create a batch of sample prototypes, but we are seeking funding to complete the first steps to manufacturing the actual products which includes the tooling and molding costs to get production started-and these are not cheap. This is why we have set our funding goal to $20,000. Hitting this goal will allow us to start the pre-production checklist for the fork, spoon, and carry case, and provide our manufacturing partner with the initial financial commitment needed to place an order to meet sales demand.
Smart cutlery makes your food taste better + adding an environmentally conscious component to our cutlery? Now that’s just brilliant.
Even though sustainable products and solutions are becoming more widespread, the mass market is slow to adopt eco-friendly materials for use in manufacturing. We decided to use Kickstarter to find like-minded supporters who have a vested interest in smart, purposeful design as well as being environmentally conscious. Your support today equals a demand for a more sustainable future and for that we thank you!
It will allow us to explore other innovative materials and create other design conscientious products that eliminate the need for multiple utensils.
We have big dreams for this better-designed utensil utilizing ECO-friendly materials and envision it being used globally in multiple markets. Our goal is to make an impactful and useful product that leaves a minimal footprint!
Risks and challenges
One of the challenges that we may face with a project like ours is the process of sourcing the sustainable material and then manufacturing it. Knork is proud to be both the brand owner and have partnered with Method Sourcing as the sourcing company for the Astrik material. This allows for us to have a greater amount of control over the production process. In addition, they have maintained a long-standing relationship with the factory, which houses the full capability to produce our kitchenware.
From manufacturer:: To assure the highest possible quality that meets our metrics, we submit our factory to annual audits by multiple third parties to ensure a professional and safe environment. We are always striving to improve the sustainability of our factory, from re-using old machinery for our injection molding process, to re-purposing the bamboo scraps that were destined for the incinerator. They ship to your front door by the end of June 2019. The carry case will ship by end of August 2019,
Because we are at a fully functional prototype we have already overcome a few key issues. The material issue with Astrik pertaining to food safety, durability, and compostability have been tested for. Engineering issues in translating our design to a mass producible product have been worked out through a process of revisions and alterations. Production capacity allocation has already been done, and therefore there is no chance in a delayed start to manufacturing.
What is left is the actual manufacturing and logistics:
1. Production delay: This can occur for various reasons concerning the injection molding machines. Our extensive manufacturing experience has taught us that we must always have a backup ready to accept the mold and continue production with minimum downtime.
2. Quality control error: At times a flaw can be found during production. As we have already produced numerous production samples we are confident that most quality issues have been resolved. However, a QC team at the factory is ready to examine each product for the entire length of the run.
3. Container vessel delays: Inbound shipping has been booked for the first production. While rare, delays at sea do happen. Delays at port are more common with customs stalling the shipment for inspection. A logistics team at our shipping partner, as well as in-house reps, monitor the vessel’s journey daily so that you can be appraised of any delays that may occur.
4. Internal shipping delay: With the success of this project there may be a massive strain on our warehouse and staff to label and send set. To mitigate this, we have created shipping-friendly packing so that we can slap a label on each box for maximum efficiency. Labels will be provided by our shipping partners before the container even arrives at our warehouse.
5. Product Packaging: We insert a material to prevent any scuffing damage during transportation. The packing material is made from re-purposed cardboard, which we put through a special shredding machine.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
