WHO IS COOPERATIVE PRESS?
Cooperative Press is a small publishing company owned by Shannon Okey concentrating on fiber arts-related books. We currently have 20+ books under contract with both well-known and emerging designers. However, traditional banks aren't interested in funding knitting-related endeavors! If you don't knit, check this out -- yes, that really happened. To give you additional perspective, fiber arts site Ravelry recently welcomed its millionth member, and sold well over 2 million dollars' worth of single patterns online in 2010 alone. Knitters make up a large (yet underserved) niche in specialty publishing, and Cooperative Press is publishing what knitters want, not marketing departments.
WHY COOPERATIVE PRESS?
Cooperative Press has an innovative business model. Instead of paying 10-12% royalties on book sales to its authors, CP equally divides the profits from each title between author and publisher -- even higher in the author's favor on digital products! Authors can earn much more than they would with a traditional publisher, exercise greater control over their intellectual property, and get their work in front of an audience faster.
WHAT IS FRESH DESIGNS?
Fresh Designs is a series of books that Cooperative Press has been working on for the past year. Each title (Hats, Scarves, Sweaters, etc) features 10 patterns by emerging designers. As with our other titles, we'll also release digital and e-book editions. We've had great success thus far with digital editions, especially overseas.
We need money up front to cut our overall Fresh Designs production costs, and to free up available funds so that some of our other book projects (such as Beyond Knit and Purl and Extreme Double Knitting) can be released before the fiber arts industry's largest trade show in June 2011. You know that old saying "you need to spend money to make money"? Nowhere is this more true than in publishing.
Having capital on hand will allow us to do a better job of bringing these books to market faster. It's a snowball effect -- publishing the Fresh Designs books sooner rather than later will help all of our authors, not just Fresh Designs contributors.
WHAT WE NEED
[hint: it's more than $5000]
We're asking for $5000 for the Fresh Designs books specifically, but we would very much welcome an additional boost. Every little bit helps. To fully fund all the projects we currently have under contract would be well north of $25,000. This will help us pay tech editors and other production-related freelancers up front, send review copies to relevant magazines, and much more.
To put it in perspective: if everyone on Ravelry.com (a popular fiber arts website) kicked in a penny, we'd have $10,000. Even a dollar helps, though of course we hope you'll donate more than that and take advantage of our cool rewards.
Thank you so much for supporting indie publishing!
