Operation Penumbra: Vol. 1 takes place in North Africa in March of 1943. The U.S. Army has just suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel and the German Afrika Korps during the Battle Of Kasserine Pass. Following the defeat, General George S. Patton (“Ol’ Blood and Guts”) was brought in to turn the Army around and make it the world class fighting force it once was.
The book begins when our main characters are sent out on patrol to recon a suspected German radio position that was attacked by an American P-40 Warhawk earlier that day. When they locate the still smoking mud brick building, they come across a horrific sight inside: damaged and destroyed radio equipment amongst carnage and viscera scattered around the room. Their shock is interrupted by the screams of their comrade and machine gun fire coming from outside. They rush to his aid and find a Sand Walker -- a scorpion the size of a Sherman tank-- attacking their friend. This isn’t the war they’d seen in film reels, and it was just the beginning.
In Operation Penumbra the Axis powers have discovered how to weaponize creatures of folklore and mythology against the Allies. Soldiers have been found massacred in their foxholes and whole Commando units have disappeared never to be heard from again. Not only does this give the German army an advantage in combat, but also the crushing blow to Allied morale would be devastating. It has fallen on the shoulders of General Patton and his secret unit, the First U.S. Army Group, to deal with the growing threat.
Successfully raising the $15,000 will allow us to put the best possible book in your hands. The funds will go toward three main areas:
Art. Paying an artist what they deserve is expensive, but when you have an artist as talented as Amanda Goebel, it is worth every penny.
Printing. Printing a book that feels good in your hand and is a joy to read doesn't come cheap. Operation Penumbra: Vol. 1 will be printed in full color, on high quality paper, and in the U.S.A. This will be the second softcover book that we have had printed by Keness, a printing company based in Pittsburgh, PA. Their quality is amazing, their service is impeccable, and they’re a blast to work with.
Your awesome rewards. The rest of the funds will be used to create all of your awesome rewards and ship them out to you in a timely manner.
Triptych Books was founded in 2010 by Kyle Winters and Mike Andersen with the goal of producing quality comics without compromise. In that same year we successfully raised over $10,000 and launched our first comic book project, Trigger Men. We then began releasing our new series while touring around to various comic book conventions up and down the West Coast. Since then we have created 200 plus pages of Trigger Men and compiled them into a single softcover volume. We have attended conventions from Seattle to Phoenix, Kyle has given numerous panel talks at those conventions, and was invited to speak about his experiences at the CSU Fullerton Creative Writing program's industry professional night.

Risks and challenges
There are numerous risks when it comes to creating any product. Bringing together a group of individuals that are spread out over long distances can be difficult for any company, but this isn't our first rodeo. For years we have worked with artists from all over, dealt with printing companies, and have successfully published over 200 pages of printed comic book material. We have experienced most of the problems a publisher can face, and even though we might face new ones, we feel that we are confident, capable, and prepared to tackle whatever comes our way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
