"What Happened Was..."
Over the 20 years of doing music full time I've accumulated a lot of unique experiences, my hope and desire with this book is to have a conversation with you about some of my greatest triumphs, joys and failures. "What Happened Was..." is a compilation of true stories from my childhood, music, songs, touring and more.
I've lived a charmed life! Picture you and I sitting in a room telling story after story about every aspect of my experiences. Ever wanted to know the backstory on a song? Ever wanted to know my perspective on a issue? Ever wanted to hang out with me for an hour and have me share my knowledge and wisdom I've learned from a life of music and ministry? This book is for you.
Each story will come with it's own soundtrack to help you experience exactly what I was feeling when I was going through that moment. This being my first auto-biographical book I wanted to allow fans the opportunity to leave quotes, pick questions and to have their name in the credits.
This book/EP is funded by the fans, inspired by the fans and written for the fans!
Thank you so much for your support throughout the years, you make what I do possible.
TRON THE RACIST DOG
.... I’ll never forget the day the dog fairy showed up at our studio. And I mean this literally-one of my dad’s friends dressed up like an actual fairy to deliver our new pooch/monster. Can you imagine? Our neighborhood was composed of some characters, to say the least. This lady was committed to the costume and the character. When she came in she said, I'm the dog fairy and I'm here to grant you your wishes. She produced this crossbred German Shepherd-esque pup. He was basically a mutt with several different breeds running through him, but I guess he resembled a Shepherd the most. I remember he was tall. He grew up to be a very, big dog, and he had gigantic ears.
I need to remind you this was the eighties. And I was a kid who was obsessed with sci-fi. So, when my dad gave me permission to name the dog, naturally only one name came to mind:
I loved (and still love) that movie. Don’t get me wrong, he ended up becoming a great dog, all things considered. Really, my only memory of him acting out was when, every once in a while, he escaped off his leash and ran to the fish market next door. He would sneak in the back and roll around in the fish guts, then return to us reeking, drenched in chum.
Tron did have one distinctive, “unique” personality trait, however. We were in a high foot-traffic area, next to a parking lot and on the main drag next to all the shops and businesses. My dad would chain him up inside the store so his leash would only reach to the doorway and no further. Again, people of various ethnicities and background walked by the front of the shop all day, day in day out. Most of the day, Tron just hung out inside of the store. But, you have to picture this: A white dude would walk by, and the dog would just sit there in the store. A Cuban guy would walk by, and the dog would just sit there. Puerto Rican guy would walk by, and the dog wouldn’t pay him any mind...
But when a black guy would walk by, the dog would lose it’s mind…

Risks and challenges
One of the major challenges of this project is the manufacturing costs (physical book + cd's) and the time and effort spent making the project. Getting in front of a crowd has always been easy, I thrive on the reaction and feeback of people. Writing however has been a struggle, there is no crowd and it takes me longer to get my thoughts out on paper. I can tell stories all day (talking) but put me in front of a computer to write them down and I blank out!
Ultimately, I decided to make this project about the fans (the stories you want to hear), for the fans (stories you didn't hear) and funded by the fans (stories only you'll hear). I want this book to feel like an conversation with you about a something that would start with the phrase "what happened was.."
My method to tackle this is to be interviewed about the story, record the audio, transcribe the audio and then edit it into short story chapters... it will feel like a conversation but read like a book! I'm super excited to share these real events from my life and lyrics and to know that you (the fans) made it possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
