We have chosen a selection of producers that we believe are the most exciting, cutting edge wine producers in New Zealand at the moment; they are new stories that have not been told yet.
Firstly, the wines have to be exciting. Next, we are looking for producers whose business models, wine growing, wine making or wine styles challenge the orthodoxy. They could be producers who choose to use extremely modern techniques or extremely traditional; they could be producers who have found new and innovative ways to sell their wine.
We believe these new and different techniques, alongside recognition of where we have come from, will give New Zealand a better insight into where the industry might be heading.
The number of 65 producers is arbitrary to a certain degree, and may go up. It was chosen because there are approximately 650 wine producers in New Zealand and so the producers we will profile represents around 10% of New Zealand. It is more important to include producers who merit it than to put a cap on the number of profiles. We want to stress that while the featured producers are some of the finest in NZ they are not necessarily "the best".
It also has to be said that lots of producers not specifically profiled will also be mentioned in both their historical and current context. Many producers who make some of the best wines in NZ... Felton Road, Ata Rangi, Te Mata, Pegasus Bay and many more... are not listed. Not because they are not phenomenal producers consistently producing some of the best wine in NZ, but precisely for that reason.
They are modern producers: well established, with an established market and established styles. Where producers with history are listed, Millton & Trinity Hill for instance, it is because they are also at the forefront of creating new styles of wine today.
