New U.K. and Ireland Middle Grade Book Subscription Box
New U.K. and Ireland Middle Grade Book Subscription Box
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, July 5 2019 7:00 AM UTC +00:00.
As two confirmed booklovers we are passionate about nurturing a love for reading.
Book Subscription Boxes are not new. In fact they are very popular and we subscribe to them ourselves. The Young Adult Book market is well catered for in the UK but we wanted to get children in on the fun.
And what’s better than getting post? Sadly our boxes won’t be delivered by owls but they will be delivered to your doorstep.
So what exactly is WeRead Box?
Let us take away the indecision over choosing your next read as we select books and send them to you in a bi-monthly themed and curated Book Subscription Box.
What will a typical WeRead Box contain?
- An awesome newly released middle grade book, in a mix of genres (that has been published in the UK/IR within two months).
- A signed bookplate (this is a sticker signed by the book’s author that you can stick in the front of your book).
- A matching/themed bookmark
- Themed collectible pin with locking back (check out our add ons for ways to display these).
- WeRead Activity Booklet featuring content from WeRead members and monthly book club discussion and activity prompts
- Author introduction video and post read Q&A (provided online) (not included in the mini box)
- Additional Item/s inspired by the monthly theme/book (not included in the mini box)
Our aim is that the books and box contents will appeal to readers of all genders.
We are committed to making our packaging and products as eco friendly as possible.
Announcing the September 2019 Theme
You Are Enough
This box is themed around the second book by a UK author which is a story of acceptance, blended families, and discovering that in the end, being yourself is more than enough.
The book is a September 2019 hardback release.
We’ve already announced that the bookmark for this box will be by Literary Galaxy.
Bonus item for the first 250 September box pledgers of a jelly wrist band.
Please note the mini box will not contain the additional items or access to the author video.
Announcing the November Theme
November’s Kickstarter exclusive box will include two atmospheric fantasy books. The book we’ve chosen is the second in a series and book one is a recent prize winner so we couldn’t separate them.
Magical animals, seasonal atmosphere, Victorian era setting and the Fair Folk!! It’s been likened to the classic A Box of Delights which we remember from our childhood.
The second book is an October release so our plan will be to have the boxes packed up and ready to ship at the end of October ready for you to receive them in early November.
Each box - mini and full will include:
An exclusive enamel pin.
A double sided bookmark (one side for each book). If you are an artist check out our post tomorrow!
The WeRead Activity Book hopefully including some of your artwork and comments from our September box.
Additionally for those purchasing the full box:
We are delighted to announce that Samantha from @ElvenWickCandles will be creating a design for a large and exciting item.
There will also be at least one other item included.
And you will have exclusive access to the author introductory video.
Follow this link to find where we hang out online.

- Parents and Grandparents looking for fun presents for avid readers
- School Based Reading Clubs
- Anybody who loves books which are primarily aimed at those aged 8-12
How much will it be?
We want to keep our subscription affordable so the standard cost for each box following the campaign will be from £27. I bet you can get your children doing lots of pocket money worthy housework for that!
Price will include postage and packing within the U.K. (Additional £4 postage per box shipped to Ireland based on current rates).
If you are quick to snap up the limited amounts of boxes available at the earlybird pledge rate from £25 per box you will save £2 on our standard price and benefit from the reduced rate on any add ons. (Don’t be late as they will only be available for the first 5 days of the campaign).
(The earlybird pledges include postage and packing within the U.K. - Additional £4 postage per box shipped to Ireland)
The full box pledge price is from £27 per box which we anticipate will be our standard price following the campaign. The Kickstarter will be the only way to get the September and November 2019 boxes. Yup they are exclusive to our backers.

Publishers - We Need You
We are urging all U.K. and Ireland based publishers of books aimed at children aged 8-12 to get in contact with us at WeReadBox@gmail.com to let us know about your 2020 releases for consideration for inclusion in our future boxes. We will be starting with bi-monthly boxes in January, March, May, July, September and November 2020. We are confident that if we fund the Kickstarter even at its lowest goal and, with a smallish number of dedicated subscribers, we will be running through 2020 and hopefully through to 2021 too.
For Publishers who are keen to support us and want the opportunity to promote their books to our subscribers in the WeRead Activity Booklet check out our Publisher Sponsor Pledge Levels.
Publisher Sponsorship will have the bonus of helping us reach two of our stretch goals and unlocking bonus Pin Display options and a Kickstarter exclusive Booksleeve and we’ll make sure our backers know who to thank for that in a video celebration. If all the Publisher Sponsorships are taken up we can develop a website that has the functionality we’d love it to have to best advertise your books.
We are determined to work with a range of large and small publishers and to make our book choices diverse. Sponsorship will not influence our monthly choices but will guarantee promotion of your books in the Activity Booklet provided in each box, on the website and on social media.
Our Funding Goal is £6,500
- We’ve set our funding goal at £6,500 which covers the creation and shipping of the minimum amount of boxes to ensure manufacture is viable whilst keeping the product affordable That’s only pledges on around 240 boxes across September and November - so only 120 dual box subscribers that we hope stay with us through 2020.
- Money will be used to buy the books direct from the publisher, pay for design and manufacture of the pins and other box items.
- Packaging and postage is included in our goal.
- We have also budgeted for Kickstarter fees.
- This amount will also cover setting up a basic website using cratejoy for the whole of 2020.
- Any additional monies taken will mean we can improve the branding and quality of the product, get additional discounts on manufacturing by buying in bulk and any profit beyond this will be used to develop a customised and fully functioning website that will enable us to manage ongoing subscriptions and share our exclusive content.
- We also need to be able to pay tax to contribute to the economy and hopefully a tiny profit to buy a book or two with!!!
Stretch Goal 1 - Bonus Kickstarter Exclusive WeRead Logo enamel pin included in every first box - Unlocked at £7,500.
Once we reach this goal any box purchasing backer will receive a bonus enamel pin of our logo with a small tweak to the design which will be exclusive to Kickstarter backers.
Add On Sponsorship Goals
Here’s a guide from Kickstarter on changing your pledge amount. As ever do contact us if you are stuck or have any questions.
Sponsorship Stretch Goal 1 is now Unlocked - Add on WeRead Pin Display items (Lanyard and Neoprene Pencil Case).
The two WeRead branded options below will give members fun ways to display their monthly themed enamel pin. These are not the final designs but are just to illustrate the items in general.
WeRead Lanyard (made from recycled materials)- £5 (usually £7)
WeRead Pencil Pouch (neoprene)- £7 (usually £8.50)
Limited to one of each of each item per box purchasing backer and the items will be shipped with one of your boxes at no extra postage charge. The reason for having this as a sponsorship goal is to ensure we can fund a minimum manufacture run to make sure we can fulfil the pledges of our most dedicated backers. All box pledges are funding the boxes and basic business costs themselves.
Any we sell on top of these simply goes to making WeRead Box as good as it can be.
Sponsorship Stretch Goal 2 - Add on WeRead Pin Display Banner. Unlocked at £1000 Sponsorship.
WeRead Pin Banner - £8 (usually £10)
Limited to one banner per box purchasing backer which will be shipped with one of your boxes at no extra postage charge.
Sponsorship Stretch Goal 3 - Add on item - WeRead Kickstarter Exclusive Booksleeve. Unlocked at £1500 Sponsorship.
Details and costs to be added if this goal is achieved. Limited to one booksleeve per box purchasing backer which will be shipped with one of your boxes at no extra postage charge. The reason for having this as a sponsorship goal is to ensure we can fund a minimum manufacture run to make sure we can fulfil the pledges of our most dedicated backers. All box pledges are funding the boxes and basic business costs themselves.

Risks and challenges
We have secured the book for our first box and are assessing options for November’s book choice.
We have quotes and provisional agreement to start manufacturing most of the items as soon as Kickstarter funds clear and in the timescale needed for delivery by our target dates.
We have budgeted for manufacturer minimum order amounts, postage and packing and Kickstarter fees leaving us money to cover our set up costs and first year of website hosting using cratejoy.
In terms of our stretch goals we have ensured we can meet the minimum manufacturing demands for cost effective production of these items. Two of the stretch goals rely on sponsorship pledges rather than general pledge totals which will completely cover the minimum production. This means we can offer the add on products to as few or as many backers as want them. Any leftover Pin Display items will be sold in our online shop at the non Kickstarter discounted rate. Any unsold Kickstarter Exclusive Booksleeves from our minimum order will be used in advertising (giveaways etc). Any Add ons purchased over and above our minimum order will cover the cost of their own manufacture and give us extra to improve the project and upgrade to a customised website.
We don’t want anyone (especially not our dedicated and keen earlybird backers) to miss out on any exclusives so any backers who pledge before the Add ons are released will be sent an update reminding them to add the relevant amount to their pledge. Following successful funding of the project surveys will be sent to confirm chosen Add ons and we will consider offering Paypal payment for any backer that missed out, and wants to give us more money for Adds ons. This will need to happen before Kickstarter funds clear so that we can begin manufacture promptly with the correct number of items needed.
We have considered workload and ensuring we have adequate time to create the best product we can. This is why we are starting with bi-monthly boxes whilst we fit this in alongside existing demands on our time and also importantly maintaining a work - life balance. In future this may change but not until we are happy we can deliver without reducing quality (of our lives as well as the products). There are only two of us - although we will be seeking the support of friends and family when it comes to packing the boxes. Chocolate biscuits and tea will be provided to sustain volunteers. Those are on us.
We’ve also limited the amount of boxes we can provide for the first two themes and the countries we can ship to. We don’t want any challenges with publishing rights, or customs, or VAT. We are trying to limit anything that gets in the way of us delivering on time and to the best of our ability. Currently our intention is to continue to limit the product to customers in UK and Ireland through 2020 and again we will not expand this until we are confident we would be able to deliver this satisfactorily. Provision to customers in Ireland may have to be reviewed in the event of Brexit and if for any reason we fear customers will be at risk of unexpected import costs we will offer refunds.
Of course hiccups do happen and our commitment to our backers is to maintain regular communication throughout the process and inform you of any delays and what we will do to minimise them.
Our biggest challenge is getting everyone as excited about this as we are and reaching our funding goal so please share this with everyone you think might be interested. We need 120 purchases of each of September 2019 and November 2019 boxes. Only 240 boxes in total. As long as we hit our goal we will have the first WeRead Boxes in the post by the end of September 2019. If we don’t reach our goal no money will be taken from backers but also sadly WeRead Box won’t exist!
We want to provide the best book we can each month and we need publishers on board telling us about their upcoming debut authors and new novels from our existing favourites. We’d love to hear from EVERYBODY about what their most anticipated 2020 middle grade reads are. Who knows you may find your favourite included in a future box.
Any outstanding questions do leave us a comment/question or ask us over on our social media. Links below.
Thanks for getting through this ramble.
Now go read something even more fun.
