About this project
Hi! My name is Joseph King and I'm the creator of Killgore, a cartoon about a bull with a machine gun, hellbent on revenge. I made a pilot for Killgore by myself over the course of a year and now, I want to create more shorts! But I can’t do this alone. I’ve assembled an awesome team of talented professionals to help me produce Killgore: The Animated Series. But I need help from YOU to make this dream a reality!
Check out the first episode I made!
It took me a year to complete the first short (2 minutes and 43 seconds of animation) on my own. I'm ready to make more Kilgore episodes! Ideally it would be bigger, better with more ass-kicking too! In order to make that happen, I need to hire professional artists to help me achieve this goal,
and that's where you guys come in!
The idea is to fund the series, one episode at a time. Our initial goal is to create a 5-minute episode that will be available for online viewing and downloading as soon as it's ready. If we surpass our initial goal, we will create even more animation!
Over a 4-5 week period, a small team (roughly 10 people), under Joseph King's direction, will complete an approximately 5-minute long episode of Killgore. Production will start as soon as we receive the funds. If we reach our stretch goals, we will create even more episodes!
The animation style will be a mix of traditional and cut-out techniques, with a bit of 3D thrown in for good measure. We will be using Toonboom for animation.
Step 1: Pre-Production Phase
First, we need to do some writing, storyboarding, casting and recording (in a professional audio production facility), creating an animatic with the final dialogue, and designing assets (backgrounds, characters, props, effects). Some character assets from the first episode will be reused but we still have have to create new character drawings, all-new 2D and backgrounds and some new 3D assets.
Step 2: Production
The next step is animation. I've got a bunch of talented guys in Los Angeles lined up to kick some serious cartoon ass! The animation is a mix of traditional and digital techniques, meaning we have character rigs but there's still a lot of drawing involved!
Step 3: Post Production
Now everything comes together: the animation will be blended together with sound effects, dialog and music to create an epic cartoon!
Once each episode is finished, backers will receive the completed version in the available format of their choice (determined by which reward tier is chosen).
Each episode will cost $40,000 to produce.
$40,000 might seem like a lot but in reality it is extremely economical compared to typical TV and Film productions, even to low-budget independent short animations. Killgore comes out to roughly $8,000 per minute. Compare that to projects like Michel Gagné’s “The Saga of Rex” ($15,000 per minute), John K’s “Cans Without Labels” ($11,000-13,750 per minute) or Dick Figures: The Movie ($8,333 per minute).
$27,000: Contractor Salaries
$27,000: Contractor Salaries
$16,500 ANIMATION (4 Weeks) - I want to hire a team of 4 animators. I'll work on character design/rigging, scene layouts and animation as well as any scene retakes.
$500 WRITING (2 Weeks) - I'll be writing most of the screenplays but I'll need a co-writer to help me really flesh out the characters!
$2,000: STORYBOARDING (2 Weeks) - I'll be storyboarding but I need some additional help to speed up the process.
$1,000: VOICE OVER (1 Week) - I want to hire some pro voice actors to bring all of these characters to life! I did all of the voices in the first episode so I might voice a background character myself...
$2,000: SOUND DESIGN (1 Week) - An amazing sound designer/rerecording mixer and a music composer will help to bring Killgore to life!
$2,000: BACKGROUNDS (2 Weeks) - I'll work on layouts and then hand off background duties to an amazing painter!
$2,000: 3D STUFF (2 Weeks) - I want to add 3D vehicles, backgrounds and props and at least one 3D character!
$1,000: GRAPHIC DESIGN (1 Week) - I'd like to pay the guy who made the logo and have him help with the title sequence and the end credits. Also I'll need some help with the product design.
$10,000: Manufacturing, Packaging and Shipping of Physical Rewards
Dvd's, Hat's, Tshirt's, Posters, Original Sketches. All these things cost time and money to produce, which takes away from the production of the episodes. I need to set aside enough money so that I'll be able to ship you your rewards as well as pay my contractors!
$3,000: Kickstarter and Payment Processing Fees
Kickstarter takes a 5% fee while Amazon Payments takes another 10% fee from the funds raised.
In general, a creator can offset the income from their Kickstarter project with deductible expenses that are related to the project and accounted for in the same tax year. Hopefully that's the case!
We get to make new friends and collaborate with fans on the internet. We don't have to bow down to any studio executives or filter our creativity through some marketing firm, and we don't have to worry about censorship, regional restrictions or limits on when you can watch the show.
Let's grab the bull by the horns and make something amazing together!
For backers, the episode(s) will be available in the format of your choosing:
- watch online through a password protected webpage
- download the episode(s) onto any device
- we'll send you a special edition DVD
Designs have not been finalized and are subject to change.

Risks and challenges
The entire Killgore crew has over 20+ years of combined experience working on TV productions. In the real world, things go wrong and the Killgore team has taken all necessary steps to avoid these problems. The budget has been meticulously planned and the production schedule is tight yet realistic . There may be delays but rest assured that if we reach our goal, the whole team will do our damnedest to complete the funded Killgore episodes as well as send out all of the rewards. I'll be providing regular updates to backers to let you all know how the project is progressing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
