About this project
>>>We are excited to have passed the $10K mark on Monday, October 3rd! We would like to thank everyone who made that possible; your support means the world to everyone at Kindling. We are now fortunate enough to say, we have until Nov 4, 1:42pm to raise funds for additional shooting with Mark Horvath and other social media and advocacy professionals. These additional shoots will enrich an already vibrant and thought provoking film. Please donate today!<<<
@home? What is this film about?
@home tells the remarkable story of one man’s fierce commitment to make the homeless visible. Mark Horvath has experienced the highs and lows of American society— from a successful career in television to barely surviving, homeless and addicted, on Hollywood Blvd. Today, Mark is devoted to his nonprofit, InvisiblePeople.tv that uses social media to raise awareness and smash stereotypes of homelessness. With Mark as our guide, we travel across this country, in the storm drains under Las Vegas, the weekly motels housing families, tent cities and everywhere in between to meet America’s homeless. As we learn from Mark what needs to change, we ask ourselves, “Can this happen?” Can homelessness be ended?
As the director of a film that reveals the power of the Internet to change lives, it is only logical that I look to Kickstarter for additional funding. The power of Kickstarter is undeniable in bringing projects to life, but this is only because of people like you who see the inherent value of the causes. I am close to completion on this film, but I need support to continue editing.
Why are we doing this?
Meeting Mark and learning about his work taught me the importance of really “seeing” the homeless people that live among us. Hundreds of thousands of Americans sleep without shelter on any given night, and their numbers are projected to double over the next two years. Homelessness is a national crisis of monumental proportions and a social failure so deep that we tend to ignore it until we cross paths with a homeless person. And then most of us look away. We make them invisible.
I seek to help end homelessness using my strongest skill, filmmaking. But it is no secret that filmmaking can be costly and that is why I’m here. I have shot hundreds of hours of footage with the most amazing people you have never met and I need you to hear their stories and see Mark’s work in action.
Join us in bringing @home to life.
Every donation matters! A single dollar could mean the difference between success and failure. With your help we can finish editing this film and get it out to you by 2012!
Who is the "we" mentioned earlier? A.K.A @home’s media partnership
This film is being produced by the combined efforts of two media organizations: The Kindling Group, a non-profit, documentary film production company with extensive production experience, and See3 Communication, an interactive communications agency that works exclusively with nonprofits, foundations, associations, and social causes.
Initial funding for @home was generously provided by the BeCause Foundation, which drives social change through the powerful fusion of documentary filmmaking and related strategic programs. The BeCause Foundation will also be supporting @home’s outreach campaign.
How does this Kickstarter business work?
1) I have set a goal of $10,000 and I have given myself a deadline, 45 days.
2) My goal can only be reached through support from people like yourself. So please give!
3) I welcome all donations, but those that give more will not only have the satisfaction of helping bring this film to life; they also receive a fabulous thank you gift.
4) I would like to exceed my goal, since 10,000 will get us only part of the way to our full budget for this film. The additional funds allow us to keep working including filming an update with Mark and interviewing other experts in the field.
5) If I don’t’ reach my goal, I will receive no funds whatsoever… That would not be a good thing. But in the event this horrible occurrence comes to pass, your credit/debit cards will not be charged.
And the funds go to….
Editing @home – Editing documentaries is a time consuming process. I am lucky to have a wonderful editor helping me and keeping him working is critical to finishing the film.
What are these “fabulous” gifts you mentioned (aka, and for helping I get…)
I’m glad you asked! You can find a list of wonderful gifts on the right side of this screen. Tell your friends and have them tell 10 more people!
Can I pass these on to someone else?
Absolutely! We have to contact you post our Kickstarter end date and we would be happy to send the gifts to your friends and family.
Can I note this donation on my taxes?
Yes, nothing says thank you like a deductible on your taxes. @home is produced by The Kindling Group, a Chicago based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All contributions made to @home will be payable to The Kindling Group and are tax deductible minus the value of any goods or services received, as permitted by law. The value of goods and services being offered is noted under each donation level.
What if I decide to give more later?
Please feel welcome to do this at any point. You can adjust your gift at any point before my Kickstarter’s closing date! To do this, go my Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to the campaign page, the green ‘Back This Project’ button will be replaced with a blue ‘Manage Your Donation’ button. Once you click that button, you may enter your new desired amount or choose a new gift.
Well… what happens if you don’t meet your goal?
Sadly, very little will happen if I don’t reach my goal. If I don’t receive my funds my film will not be completed.
Can you exceed your goal? And happens if you exceed it?
To the first question, yes, I can exceed my goal, and this is the best-case scenario for Kickstarter. I can receive donations right up until the last second of the goal date. To answer the second question, if I exceed my goal, I would like to film more with Mark to explore how his work has progressed since our road trip together. I would also like to interview experts in the world of homelessness to get a larger perspective on what is being done today to end this crisis. $10,000 is our minimum and all funds will go into making this film the best it can be. So let’s rally and try to go above and beyond!
When would I receive my premiums?
You will receive you gifts as soon as we can possibly package and send them out. For some gifts there may be a wait, as they need to be edited or printed while I’m finishing the film. I will be in touch via email and you will be notified about your gifts as they become available.
What if my company matches donation? Can you receive the matching funds?
Let’s talk! I would like to receive as many matching gifts as possible and this may require The Kindling Group getting in touch with your company. Please email me if this is the case!
How can you be reached?
