Kind Ice Cream is owned and operated by Paula Shyba, Nicole Bhar and Candyce Morris. We’re family - Nicole is Paula’s wife, Candyce is Nicole’s sister - as well as business partners; together we own Neat Collective (made up of Neat Photo Booth and Neat Photo Booth Supplies) and Arrow Films. We're proud to be a women-led business.
We’re passionate about our city, about community, and about extraordinary ice cream. We have long envisioned having a great, community-centered ice cream shop in Edmonton and decided that now is the time to bring that vision to reality. We want locals to have a beautiful, neighbourhood destination to bike to with their families, pop in to with friends after dinner, or pick up delicious pints and ice cream sandwiches to bring home.
We filter all of our decisions, plans and processes through our mission to be kind - kind to our environment with the supplies and products we use, inclusive and welcoming to our staff and customers and supportive of local suppliers and businesses.
We see Kind Ice Cream as an opportunity to fill a gap in Edmonton's landscape and to do it with integrity and quality right at the center of it all.
Our Ice Cream
Kind Ice Cream has one job: to bring the joy.
Flavours featured at Kind Ice Cream will include classic favourites such as salted caramel, local strawberry and mint chip, and out-of-the-ordinary options like black sesame and candied pecans and woodsmoke. We will be offering 10 “always” flavours and 6 rotating seasonal flavours, allowing us to push our creative boundaries and use the best possible ingredients depending on the time of year.
Understanding that there is a need for non-dairy options, we're going to offer both dairy and vegan ice cream at our shop. We've perfected the recipes both ways and we're excited to be able to offer something for everyone.
In addition to our scoops, we're going to offer a selection of delicious ice cream sandwiches made with soft in-house-made cookies and carry-out pints for you to bring home to share the love with your friends and family (or your own, deserving self. You beauty).
We’ve brought renowned Edmonton chef Chael MacDonald on board to create and perfect our ice cream. With an impressive culinary background having consulted at local beloved spots including District Cafe, Little Brick and Wilfred’s, Chael brings in expert kitchen know-how and a ridiculously creative palate.
Our flavours will be made of real ingredients sourced as locally as possible, featuring Alberta eggs and cream and a ton of local suppliers. Everything we serve will be made in small batches in our production kitchen on site. It really is the only way to do it right.
Our shop is located in Ritchie, one of Edmonton’s most vibrant neighbourhoods. Directly across from Ritchie Market and walkable to Mill Creek Ravine and Whyte Avenue, we’re also a short drive from downtown and Edmonton’s south central neighbourhoods.
We've had our heart set on Ritchie from the very beginning. With the addition of the Ritchie Market in 2017 and ongoing neighbourhood enrichment along 76th avenue, Ritchie is buzzing. We were thrilled to come across the opportunity to open our shop in this beautiful, central part of the city. We're building our shop with the intention of creating another community hub - a place to meet and gather with neighbours, family and pals.
Design at Kind Ice Cream will be a priority, with a focus on gorgeous branding from our interior to our take home pints and our merchandise. The interior design concept includes natural materials such as maple wood and concrete, clean lines, and pops of bright colour.
With a focus on design, we’re working on creating one of Edmonton's most inspiring and welcoming places to gather.
We’re throwing this Kickstarter campaign as a way to raise the last push of capital for opening and as a way to say hello to you, our community. We’re offering some great rewards so that you can be among the first to try the ice cream that we’re offering. From gift cards to experiential ice cream crafting, there's something for everyone.
Funds raised in this Kickstarter will help Kind Ice Cream finance the supplies, products and launching costs needed to be able to hit the ground running once our construction is completed. Every dollar raised will be put to good use as we put the finishing touches on our shop and our recipes.
We’re opening Kind Ice Cream because we want to give the community something that we’ve always felt was missing. Edmonton has an incredibly kind and connected community and we're grateful for your support as we move forward with our dream. We can hardly wait to return the favour by sharing delicious treats with you, our community, once we’re open in just a few months.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk in opening an ice cream shop is, of course, our climate here in Edmonton. It isn't uncommon for ice cream establishments to have a difficult time trying to acquire financing for opening.
In our case, we spent months and months prior to even considering this shop looking into the numbers. We know that with the proper business model and preparations for a slower winter season, we have the ability to thrive as a business in this community.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
