LGBTQ Aussie Fest: An Artist Abroad
My first Kickstarter project sought to find homes for all of my US paintings, and to establish my practice down in Sydney, Australia! I had so much fun during the last project, that I figured I'd turn an upcoming opportunity into a Kickstarter project as well!
I've got the paintings, I've got the shows, now I need the funds! After moving to Australia, my work caught the eye of two amazing galleries that would like to display my paintings during their yearly LGBTQ festivals. They'd also like me to display my art on cool stuff!
The first is Platform72, a local Sydney exhibition space that is part gallery-part retail. It gives artists a way to connect with local buyers and build community. Platform72's Director has invited me to display my art and cool stuff in the retail space during the weeks leading up to Mardis Gras (March 2014), an annual LGBT pride parade and festival in Sydney, attended by hundreds of thousands of people from around the globe! We are also exploring participating in public art & ephemeral events and/or displaying work in a solo show at the gallery. In their retail section, Platform72 rents ‘shelf space’ to artists for 12 weeks (to start) with an unlimited amount of change-overs of work. I will pay them a small rental fee with NO commission on sales, 100% back to me.
The second show that I've secured is at Gasworks, a not for profit community arts facility located in Melbourne that presents an annual program of events. This includes drama productions, workshops, farmers markets, events and visual art exhibitions. The show is called The Comfort Zone, and will be held from 15 January – 2 February 2014. The exhibit will be part of the full program of Midsumma, Melbourne's annual LGBTQ Festival!
Update! Third Melbourne Exhibit Added!
I've just been accepted into another LGBTQ themed show during Melbourne's Midsumma Festival. The exhibit will be at 1 Spring Street Gallery, and it's titled Inquisitarium;
"Enter the world of the Inquisitarium where thoughts wander and minds are lost. We all seek to belong in life and strive to be treated as equal. But it is only through our minds, as unique and fragile as they are that we can truly be ourselves."-- Inquisitarium statement
Let the painting extravaganza begin!!
This is where you come in. I have absolutely no idea which of my paintings and products to feature!?! I've got dozens of images, plus 9 original paintings in Australia to choose from, and will be creating 3 more by January. Backers will help fund the materials and expenses, and will help me to pick which to display! I've got my art on a ton of cool stuff ranging from prints, T's, tanks, cases, hoodies, throw pillows and more! These will be the rewards, along with my original artwork.
HOW DOES THIS WORK? Essentially, you pledge to back my project, then select your reward. The images of my art that you select for your cool stuff will decide what I show at Platform 72 and Gasworks!
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO? When you pledge to back my Kickstarter project, you'll be funding:
- Small rental fee for 12 weeks at Platform72 (5%)
- Producing the merch for Platform72 (25%)
- Fulfilling the rewards for my backers (45%)
- Worldwide shipping costs (10%)
- Kickstarter and Amazon fees (7-10%)
- Flight to Melbourne (3%)
- Materials to produce a project-specific painting that I'll create exclusively during the Kickstarter fundraiser! (5%)
My 'art on cool stuff' is created through a site called Society6 that features artwork by hundreds of thousands of artists from around the world. They collaborate with organisations like 'GOOD', Urban Outfitters, Vans, Threadless and more! I've been fortunate enough to have my work featured in both the Society6 and Threadless shops multiple times.
I've got my art on a ton of cool stuff ranging from prints, T's, tanks, cases, hoodies, throw pillows and more! All of my products are produced when you order them, on-demand, to avoid waste and keep things sustainable. For the purpose of this project I'll need to have them produced in advance to display at Platform 72.
I want every backer to have a tangible way to experience this awesome intersection between retail and gallery, so every pledge level over $20 will receive a reward with my art on cool stuff! The rewards you choose will help me to decide which products to feature at Platform72 :) I've already included shipping into my expenses, so my backers will receive FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE! You can choose to have ANY of my artwork on the products available in my Society6 shop. Rewards are based off of pledge amounts, so check out the details below!
I create figure paintings of queer supportive and LGBTQ-identified women. My work toys with the concept of glorification vs. objectification vs. modification. I incorporate various facets of nature in to my work in order to comment on the mutability of life, gender and beauty. The most recent work has evolved and become more intertwined with my personal life. Many of the portraits feature my partner, dearest friends, and myself...focusing on those who have impacted my life in some way. I'll be painting more for you to choose from over the next 2 months, but you can check out the available work by clicking here! You can also check out the paintings specific to the $140 pledge level by clicking here.

Risks and challenges
Once the project is funded, I'll have the unique challenge of organizing shipping to backers globally on a relatively large scale. Because these products are produced on-demand it may take a month to get everyone's addresses and art choices. I'll be sure to fulfill rewards as soon as I receive the funds and info, so you should have everything soon!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
