UPDATE: Yeah! Thanks to the awesome people supporting us, we've reached our funding goal!
Don't stop now, though. We have a huge student festival to run in April and other great events to support throughout the year. We need every penny we can get to keep going.
Please make our dreams come true and make this a HUGE fundraiser for us! Check out all the rewards to the right and pick something you like--and then support us now.
By backing this project you help underwrite the San Diego Shakespeare Society's annual Celebrity Sonnets at the Old Globe Theatre (October 8, 2012). The cost to produce this event is $1,000 which covers tech staff time, reception costs, and program printing. We want this year's Sonnet event to be a success before the curtain is even raised--and you CAN make this happen!
But that's not all we need!
This Kickstarter campaign ensures our Celebrity Sonnets will be profitable and, if we get lucky, anything raised above our goal will be put towards the rest of our free events for the year. We'll use your money to pay for the sonnet event (and make it as awesome as possible) and anything extra will go to our monthly free events and our Student Shakespeare Festival in April.
We produce lots of free events throughout the year and pay for these events on our own (partly through ticketed events like our Celebrity Sonnets). With finances tighter than ever, we could use more than the $1,000 goal to ensure we can continue to offer these free programs. Some of these programs include: monthly Open Readings, bi-monthly lectures, and the annual Student Shakespeare Festival which costs us at least $25,000 each year, all free to the public!
We invite 14 celebrities to present 2 sonnets to our audiences on the main stage of the Old Globe theatre on October 8, 2012. We have had sonnets presented with music, dance, puppets, cartoons, and multiple languages. We've had rock songs of sonnets and sonnets with Bongo playing. We've had sonnets with Tango and sonnets with ballet. The styles vary widely; we have had one presenter simply reading a sonnet at a microphone, and one sonnet was presented by 20 dancers in costume. It makes for a great night for the whole family.
Who will present in 2012? We can't announce all the names yet as we are still working on the list. We'll announce the names to our backers first and then to the world at large. We can say that we have these presenters scheduled so far:
Mike Nelson, actor and writer from Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and Rifftrax.com (aka Michael J. Nelson)
David Brin, award-winning science fiction writer
Austyn Myers, young actor from many productions, including the Old Globe's Brighton Beach Memoirs and Eddie Murphy's movie, Meet Dave

--Legal Disclaimer: While our event is held at the Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park, the SDSS is not affiliated with the Theatre nor is this Kickstarter campaign associated with them or supported by them. We are separate entities. They have coordinated with us on some events and allow us to use their stage for this event at reduced cost, but we have to cover the cost of the tech crew and other parts of the production. The use of their name in this campaign is for informational purposes only to indicate the venue where our project is being held. (Just a side note, the Old Globe Theatre is awesome and we here at the SDSS love them!)
