Hi! My name is Kimberly Hawkey and I sing old pop songs - traditional jazz, swing, folk, blues, tin pan alley and early showtunes. Some folks call this the Great American Songbook... I call it an obsession. I never set out to become a modern voice with an 80 year-old fixation, but I could never resist a solid melody and witty lyrics. Oscar Hammerstein II. Johnny Mercer. Harold Arlen. Cole Porter. George Gershwin. Richard Rodgers. Irving Berlin. Harry Warren. Hoagy Carmichael. ::swoon::
I've been told I'm an old soul. Some have said I've lived before, but the truth is: this music is still relevant! If you are an artist, a dreamer, a lover, a historian or an "old soul" like me, you will connect with these songs. For my debut album, I'm taking it a step further and carrying this style into the next generation - not by any spectacular feat or unheard-of means! - just by being a modern-music loving person who wants to create a fantastic, vintage-inspired escape for other modern ears. We don't live inside a vacuum, so if we think a funky bass line suits the telling of a particularly naughty 100-year old folk song, we're gonna go for it. Toy piano? Maybe. Electric mandolin? Possible. This will be a full collaboration between my 1940s alter-ego and the talented, capable, intelligent, modern musicians that share my passion for old-school song forms. Words that I hope will come to describe this project: bold, nostalgic, swingin', vulnerable, happy, sexy, clever, honest.
The album WILL be recorded in August at Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY - one of my favorite places in the world. I will be joined by some of the most versatile musicians in New York City. We will record a FULL-LENGTH album of songs from the traditional repertoire or by American songwriters. We will build arrangements that breathe new life into the lyrics with the intention of honoring the songwriters in the process.
Kimberly Hawkey (vocals). Assaf Gleizner (piano). Ray Cetta (bass). Mike Gordon (drums). Bjorn Ingelstam (trumpet). With Special Guests!
But what will it SOUND like? Don't worry! I offer the following collage to help explain:
I am raising a minimum of $8500 to cover the following expenses:
- Dreamland Recording Studio for Two Full Days of Tracking
- Amazing, Professional Musicians who are perfect for the project
- Mixing and Mastering the full-length album
- CD Duplication and Printing
- Video documentation
I am relying solely on beautiful, music-loving people to contribute. Yes, that's YOU! Even long-established artists with multiple recordings under their belt are utilizing the fantastic and effective tool of online crowdfunding. We recognize that it's a way for people with similar interests to rally together and ensure the success of a cared-for project. By crowdfunding, I am BETTING that you will care enough about American song, new vocalists, good music and me, in general, to pledge your support! In return, I will deliver a love-filled music experience that I sincerely believe you will enjoy! Additional funding beyond the goal of $8500 will be put toward photography, an electronic press kit, a debut music video, and website development. Funding is not without perks, of course...

Kimberly Hawkey is a modern singer with a sound from another era. Drawing on popular songs from the 30s and 40s, she is lauded as "a delightfully fresh-voiced treat" (Broadway World) and "a true lead singer with real presence and substance behind the style" (Sarasota Observer). Kimberly performs throughout NYC as bandleader of The Swingaroos Territory Band, and as the writer and performer of "AS HERSELF"; a Hollywood-themed tribute to the stars of the swing-era. She interprets classic pop songs with a sense of humor and a modern perspective, and also enjoys writing originals in the same tradition (often complementing them with the sounds of tenor banjo, washboard or kazoo). She is a Winner of the American Traditions Vocal Competition, Johnny Mercer Award, Jazz Forum Arts Vocal Competition, NYC Cabaret Showdown and was named one of the Top Ten Best Actresses in a Musical in Rockland/Westchester/CT for her work with Elmwood Playhouse.
