About

Computer Science is More than Coding

Hiya, Kiki here! If you've had any exposure to elementary school computer science over the past five years, then you've probably used some of the products that I've had a hand in creating.

At the end of August, I'm shifting my focus away from the formal computer science education (CSEd) space to create Algorithms Magazine, a bimonthly publication geared toward kids to help them traverse the world of computer science in a fun and non-intimidating way.  I would love for you to be a part of my adventure.

About the Magazine

Schools all over the nation are introducing computer science to children as young as kindergarten, but no single curriculum has everything that teachers need for their classrooms.  Parents are also eager to provide computer science experiences at home, but it's difficult to narrow existing materials down to the fundamentals.

Algorithms Magazine will help with both of these situations, presenting the basics of computer science through engaging puzzles, stories, articles, and activities.  The activities at the beginning of the magazine will be geared toward younger students (grades 2-4) while the offerings at the end will appeal to students in grades 5-8.  Each child will find real world concept connections, coding opportunities, playful unplugged puzzles, and examples of how other students learned computer science or how they are using it to make the world a better place.

About the Creator

So, you might be wondering why I have dedicated my life to getting young children interested in computer science.  Contrary to how it may seem, I'm not solely focused on creating a generation of young coders. What I am focused on is creating a generation of independent thinkers and problem solvers. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to see how young people grow in the face of persistence over failure. I've watched them build resilience and self-efficacy, even as they continue to wrestle with the types of problems that computer science is famous for.  There are very few subjects that offer the frequent struggles and successes that CS has. It is uniquely positioned to help people grow as learners and as creators.

With several books under my belt, along with the publication of dozens of unplugged activities and hundreds of coding lessons, I understand what it takes to make an activity both fun and educational.  My work on Disney's "Moana's Wayfinding with Code" activity helped us win the 2017 Golden Halo Award for an Education Campaign.  Also in 2017, I won the Silver Stevie Innovator of the Year Award, honoring my books and my YouTube channel, KIKIvsIT.

My goal is to give you exactly what you're missing in computer science education, whether it comes directly from the magazine, or from the connections forged because the magazine exists.  If this campaign funds, your children and students will get fun and enlightening opportunities in print, while you get helpful online resources for facilitating deeper learning.

Stretch Goals

$50,000 - Online parent resources and teacher lesson plans for every magazine issue.

$75,000 - Online videos for each issue.  Nothing explains difficult concepts quite as well as short videos by people who know what’s going on.  If we hit this stretch goal, we’ll add videos to explain the most difficult activities in each magazine.

$100,000 - More pages! We have so much content to cover, and our goal is to give you more with every issue.

$150,000 - Add a summer issue!

Planned Issues

  •  Sept/Oct - ROBOTS! (In production)
  •  Nov/Dec - The Internet (Hour of Code Issue!)
  •  Jan/Feb - All About Algorithms
  •  March/April - Games
  •  May/June - The Hardware Connection

About the Team

No new project would be complete without a team of trusted advisors to make sure that promises are being kept.  The crew behind Algorithms Magazine has years of CSEd experience, covering every corner of the educational spectrum:

Hilary Albert - PM/Chief of Staff on the Azure Global Engineering team at Microsoft

Sarah Carter - Manager, STEM Media & Education, Science Producer at TPT - Twin Cities PBS

Joanna Goode - CS Education advocate and Associate Professor at the University of Oregon

Jane Krauss - Curriculum and Program Development Consultant for ISTE & NCWIT

Jo Oshiro - CS/STEM Advocate

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk for this project would be funding at a level that is too low to allow the magazine to continue for the full school year. I'm trying to mitigate that risk by offering the magazine bimonthly (every two months) during the course of a school year (September-June). This will allow us to assess interest level and production capabilities before expanding.

There is also the potential of risk associated with having a membership-based website. While building the actual content is second-nature, the need to navigate technical issues often comes when it is most inconvenient. Fortunately, I am surrounded by brilliant computer scientists, many of them quite skilled in the mire of the Internet. Algorithms Magazine will have a handful of helpers on-call to take care of issues that arise, particularly during high-usage events.
