Hello everyone, and welcome to our KickStarter Project, KIKI Magazine.
If you're a young queer woman, if you're a feminist, if you don’t quite fit into a box, you’re in the right place.
KIKI was born out of an empty space.
We created KIKI because we want young queer women to be empowered with knowledge, debate and self-acceptance. We aim to provide content that is unconventional, exciting, and encourages much-needed reflection and debate.
Let’s talk about things that make us uncomfortable.
We want KIKI to be the voice that wasn't there when young women were struggling to figure out who they were; the voice that can give trustworthy advice and positive role models. We want to make that crucial ride of self-discovery a little smoother. KIKI will unite us, and in doing so will create a community and safe space that will accept everyone without judgement. This community is not exclusive. We are part of the LGBTQ+ community. We are women. We are human beings. But we need a space that is ours.
From serious coverage of crucial LGBTQ+ issues to sarcastic reviews of god-awful gay bars. There's something for everyone in KIKI.
We created this campaign to raise money to allow people who are interested in KIKI to purchase an issue, and from there we can set our sights on larger issues, better production, and hopefully create a more concrete, established brand. KIKI was created to provide a platform, a safe space, a strong community, and an overall great piece of media for young, queer women, but we can't do it without some support. We are putting everything we have into making KIKI something great, and hope people will be interested in joining us. Help us get issues to those who really want to read more, spread the word and ignite conversation.
We are a group of third-year journalism and media students situated in London, so we are constantly surrounded by queer culture. KIKI's journalists have all been published in professional copy, and have buckets of work experience to deliver, minus the corporate mindset. We have the software experience, the journalistic knowhow, and we can write like there's no tomorrow. Our commissioned artists and photographers are absolutely fantastic, and have never let us down. Some amazing examples would be the work of @lalitainlove and @alessia.h.photography.
However, we may have student expertise, but we also have the infamous 'student budget', so we need some help to get KIKI off the ground. We hope you can help us bring this wonderful project to life.
What the funds will do for KIKI
As you can see, we have the first issue written and drafts have been bound and sent to us. In addition, the cover was commissioned and designed by talented artist DeeSeptima. However the funding we need will be used to allow for KIKI's vital development and establishment.
We will use the funds to purchase and distribute the bound, finalised primary issue to those who want to read it, after receiving a lot of interest over Facebook and Instagram. We will also purchase a subscription to WIX to get KIKI a professional website for a year, which will amount to £93.12 (£7.76 per month).
As previously mentioned, the majority of needed funds will be going directly into distribution. As we are a new, independent magazine, we are setting our sights on printing 200 issues, as this will allow us to meet the demands of those wanting a copy, as well as the potential influx of new KIKI fans who this campaign will hopefully reach. Through our printing company, this would amount to £814, with considerations of issue cost on a commercial level and additional digital copies. Each issue will be between 48 and 56 pages long.
Commissions: Art and Photography
We have links with artists to create fantastic cover imagery and other works within the product, so some of the money raised will be attributed to ensuring the best quality artistic works within KIKI. As a result, we estimate that £100 of the donated funds will go towards the issue's next cover, and some additional art if and when necessary.
As for photography commissions, this will be another £150 to pay for the necessary high-quality photography required for our articles.
What we will be asking for
Considering the costs of shipping tier rewards, publishing and printing issues, and all of the aforementioned costs, KIKI will be asking for £1250, rounded up with consideration of potential extra costs.
For other costs such as travel to events of interest, software subscriptions etc, these will be coming out of our own pockets as we don't want to rely entirely on the kindness of donators, as we are committed to this 100 percent. We want to show any donator that we are all-in with KIKI magazine, and will be making the necessary cut-backs and contributions to prove it.
For Further Information...
In addition please feel free to email us if you are interested in what we do, if you would like to know more, have any questions about the campaign, purchase a soon-to-be-made copy, offer article ideas, request freelancing opportunities etc. This is all about community, so we'd love to hear from you.

This is the first campaign we are doing, and the goal is quite small as this is just the very beginning of KIKI. We understand we are relatively unknown, and hopefully this will get us started and distributed to the people who want to read our content.
Thank you for reading KIKI's story.
Risks and challenges
Every Kickstarter campaign comes with it's own risks and challenges. We acknowledge firstly that creating a magazine alongside our student studies would be a definite challenge, however we spent 6 months of our second year putting together the starting issue, and we are fully expecting to put in just as much effort, and more, in delivering the next step. We are committed to KIKI in its entirety, and if we were able to get the funding, the fanbase, and if we could establish KIKI strongly, we would never want to let down people who believed in us to get us this far. We might not be fully-fledged journalists yet, but we want to preserve our professionalism and integrity regardless.
Getting the issue 'out there' to the public may also be a challenge for KIKI. However, we have already established a relationship with a fantastic online publisher, and will ensure the highest quality product is produced and distributed to those who donate to the associative tiers, and request the purchase of a copy.
Our commitment, perseverance, and passion for KIKI will allow us to overcome any obstacle in our way, and we hope that you consider donating to KIKI.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
