As a kid, my love of science fiction was born from watching movies with my family. Outer space was always fascinating to me and I hoped I would be one of those lucky individuals who got to jump aboard a space ship, hit the “hyperdrive,” and venture off to unknown planets with cool new aliens, civilizations, & technology. The films, comics, & other media I took in had a gigantic influence on my love of science fiction. Now that I’m a little older, I’ve created a few sci-fi based music projects of my own and now I’m doing something fun that I’ve always wanted to do: make a children’s book!
My daughter was born last spring and one thing I hope she grows to enjoy as much as I do is science fiction & outer space. Science Fiction opens up unlimited worlds for everyone and allows for infinite possibilities & manifestations upon which we can attach our imaginations. As a father and a creator of color, I want to position myself & Ion to show my child as well as other young people from marginalized groups that the vast universe of science fiction and, if I'm allowed to make the connection, related fields like S.T.E.M. are for everyone. Young readers certainly may not grasp all of that right from the beginning, however, having a character like Ion to imagine fun adventures in outer space with can go a long way towards keeping them excited about science fiction and/or space related interests and careers.
Although science fiction is a big tent, a large portion of that world is geared towards somewhat older fans and I thought it would be fun to create a character that my little one, and other young readers, can enjoy and engage their imaginations. This led to the creation of what I hope will be young readers' newest friend, Ion the Young Shuttle!
The story of Ion is that of a little space shuttle that gets to go around the universe learning, exploring, and having fun. Some of these afore mentioned young readers are going to be our future scientists, inventors, & space explorers so, hopefully, I can inspire or help them maintain their interest in the universe.
Once I settled on the concept for the book, I needed to determine its voice. I decided to blend my love of music and the poetic nature of song lyrics to work out the book’s tone & delivery. This resulted in what I hope to be a fun, almost sing-song way for parents and kids to enjoy reading about Ion and his adventures. Here's a quick sample:
This little ship is as quick as they come.
His name is Ion from Assembly Line Number One.
He’ll fly with the others and make lots of new friends
Until he returns to the space port again.
Once that was done, it was time to figure out how Ion would look. I decided to take a crack at drawing Ion and settled on a simple look of a small space shuttle…
At this point, I had reached the limits of my drawing skills. I realized I needed a REAL illustrator to take over at this point. Thanks to social media, I was lucky enough to come across the profile of artist Heather Lunny. I took a look at her work and was instantly a fan of her art style, so I reached out and sent her a copy of the book and she agreed to help me bring Ion to life.
She took my sketch and, with a just a few discussions between the two of us, turned my idea into something that started to feel very real!
We talked about some fine details and color options and really began to see Ion’s true colors shine through. As we collaborated further, we settled on a color scheme for Ion, and knew we were ready to go!
Now it was time to get Ion into his universe and begin connecting him with the story. Through Heather’s brilliant work, Ion was inserted into the story amidst beautiful galactic scenery and instantly came to life! The sample pages turned out great!
I’m really excited to be working with Heather because I can really feel her enthusiasm for Ion and it’s really great to see him come to life through her eyes.
Now all we need is you! Your support will help us put the finishing touches on Ion’s story and bring him to you and the young readers in your life.
We’ll also have some fun rewards including:
Additionally, if we surpass the goal, we can reach for our stretch goals!
We're excited to see this happen and we hope you are too!
If you’re curious where the funding is going, here’s a quick breakdown of how your support will be directed:
That’s it! All we need is your support to launch Ion into orbit!
Thanks for taking some time to learn about Ion. We appreciate you!
