About this project
Every Kid Has a Story to Share
Kids Photography Academy (KPA) is an online classroom of video lessons and other tools where children ages 6-12 will learn to tell their own story through the art, science and fun of photography.
For a child, telling their own story often needs more than words
KPA has grown out of my own passion for storytelling through the lens of my camera, and from discovering the world through the eyes of my own children. As a professional family photographer for 6 years, I’ve confidently created this course certain kids will love how much fun it is to learn!
The expressions on a child's face when they take a picture are priceless. It doesn’t matter where they are from, what their interests are, or what camera they have. That expression is combined curiosity, joy and pride that they've captured things that delight them. Sharing the images with friends and family they have taken has no comparable experience.
A child must feel safe to fully express ideas without judgement
As a professional photographer, I get to photograph children all the time. They are always the subject in my images (they are so full of light and spirit we must capture their youthful moments in time).
But they are more than just a subject in their story. What I want most from Kids Photography Academy is to invite children to tell their own story by also putting them behind the camera. I want the camera to be a tool to express themselves in their vision of their life.... with confidence, with inclusion and with security they can show what delights, excites, bothers or motivates them exactly as they see it.
I have always been fascinated by how bright, creative and clever children truly are wherever I have traveled in the world. Kids Photography Academy lets all kids showcase their brilliance with a camera in hand – whether it’s a traditional point and shoot or a smart phone built-in camera - with a solid guiding hand to evolve images into their art.
The Details: What is Kids Photography Academy?
I'm a big kid at heart, and a life-long learner, so I have been delighted to infuse the lessons with fun language and solid kid-friendly methods that will:
- instill compositional and technical elements into their everyday photography taking
- reinforce the science, facts and lessons of photography for years to come
- inspire new perspectives, insights and outcomes for their emotions and ideas to turn into art
For example, through testing out the program with neighbourhood children, we have learned they love the invitation to move around, breaking the "rules" of where to stand and sit to get the best perspective for an image through poetic phrases they will remember!
The Online Classroom Outline
KPA will be an online classroom where kids learn about photography concepts (compositional, technical and storytelling). The targeted age range is from 6 – 12, but teenagers and even adults will learn a great deal about photography techniques by watching the videos.
Each lesson will include:
- a professionally developed video explaining concepts, showing examples & giving inspiration for that topic
- a document of the concepts (print or read online) so they can reference them when needed
- a fun assignment with each of the lessons where they apply what they’ve learned
- ideas of what to do with their pictures to get them off the camera or computer and into their home for the whole family to enjoy
Goal: Launch with 6 series of video courses, 3 video lessons in each
Kickstarter funds are going directly to pay for the professional creation of 18 video lessons. The first 4 series, a total of 12 classes, are called the FUNdamentals and will be available for our roll out in December and January if we reach full funding in this campaign. The extended course materials will be created in February 2014 with any revenue we earn or investment we receive above our fund request amount. This is a sample of some of the kid-inspired course themes by title:
- Seek New Perspectives
- Take me To Your Leader (leading lines)
- Look for Light
- You Spin Me Round & Round (the colour wheel)
- Tell YOUR story
- Get a Little Closer (filling the frame)
The Foundation is Set, We're Almost Ready to Launch
Our lessons are fully planned and we have professionals contracted to do our videography. Our website is already in development.
We want to launch the program as completely and professionally as possible to benefit the children who are going to sign up. With multiple lessons available, we can give them access to the next course as soon as they complete the first one.
Your much-appreciated dollars will be going directly towards filming & editing our video lessons so we will be able to launch fully within 6 weeks from the time this fundraiser ends! We’re ready to go!
Ideas, Ideas, Ideas
I am constantly jotting down ideas for future lesson plans and so you can be guaranteed this website will not be stagnant. We’ll be adding more lessons, bringing in feedback opportunities and other features as we move along.
I have built Kids Photography Academy out of my desire to create something that is inclusionary. I want all children, no matter where they live or how they think, to know that the qualities that make them the most unique as a person are the very things that will also make them the most talented storytellers.
By contributing to this campaign you too will be part of developing kids' creativity, self expression and confidence. Thank you for coming on this journey with me and the future photographers of the world!
Risks and challenges
Risks & Challenges
As we are pretty established and ready to launch in terms of marketing, web development and script writing, the challenges are simply related to time to get videos completed.
Our wish is to complete the videos well in advance of the 2013 holiday season, which may be tricky! However, we have a professional team of videographers/editors and technical web teams ready to go once we have the funding to complete the actual video production.
If pre-holiday 2013 is not attainable, KPA launch will occur in the first part of 2014.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
