About

The Youth Golf Initiative for Liberia

My name is S.J. Leonard, Director of Poulsbo Golf LLC in Poulsbo, WA. In the Spring of 2018, I was introduced to a gentleman (Mr. Giddings) in Monrovia, Liberia with extensive experience in organizational management and civil engineering. I proposed a "Youth Golf Initiative" for Liberia, allowing hundreds or even thousands of young people in Liberia to learn the great game of golf. He agreed, we created a pilot project called "The Liberian Future Links Program" for prospective young golfers and the initiative has been a great success. Golf has always been virtually inaccessible to the bulk of Liberian youth. Our program provides an open-door, state of the art skills training program at no cost to the young golfers. The enthusiasm level has been quite extraordinary. As we discussed the spontaneous interest for the program, a vision came to us: a comprehensive documentary film depicting individual stories, reactions to learning golf for the first time, parent interviews about their hopes and dreams for their children, and excellent coverage of the beauty of Liberia and its people within the scope of this activity. Golf builds self-confidence, mental focus, goal-setting, respect (for self, others, and rules), and persistence. Already the parents are thanking us for the noticeable benefits they are seeing. Capturing this on film in a high-quality documentary format serves as a Model/Example that can hopefully unleash a wave of similar initiatives. We are innovating. We have hired supervisors of the training facility who take photos and capture film footage. We will be traveling to outlying areas of the capital soon, and throughout Liberia later, to interview and document actual steps and agreements leading to the launch of local programs. The film will document a program that will impact hundreds of lives for many years to come, and in a country that has experienced terrible strife in the past, what we are doing is HUGE (in terms of next-generation growth). It is good to do good, but it is GREAT to document doing good so that others may benefit from seeing the model. This film will hopefully be a testament to human enthusiasm and dreams, while serving as a "I can do that too" model for others. To do this right we need Funding Support. Email me at poulsbogolf@gmail.com if you would like to see more video and photos of our current progress, and legal documents (we are legally registered as a Not-for-Profit Organization under Liberian Law), and I will be happy to share with you. The documentary we will produce will simply reflect the happiness and enthusiasm of a whole lot of young people who are doing something new and exciting in a country that is starting to embrace its future!

Risks and challenges

I thought that simple communication would be a barrier in the pilot project. How do I, from Washington State, ensure that the students, in Monrovia, are getting started in the right direction with fundamentals? I have been happily surprised at how easy Skype allows us to do training sessions. People should understand that big things are happening in Africa and Liberia today, and many people are tech-savvy. My partners are using Excel spreadsheets to capture student progress, they know how to take high-quality video and .zip the video files and send them to me, they are scouring YouTube for excellent golf instructional materials, and this new wave of optimism is the future face of Africa. Mr. Giddings and his team secured a written agreement with a high school for use of a run-down storage room, and they renovated the room into a clean and bright training center the kids love to use. The main risk in a transcontinental project like this is trust in the partners. In my case, my partners have delivered 100% on every item we have agreed on to date, they clearly want this program to succeed and be documented in an excellent way on film, and I really feel like the main challenge we face is having too many young people asking to participate without us having equipment and facilities to meet their demand. We need support to meet the momentum hitting us from the community.
