Alright...hit me. Give me the elevator pitch/tl;dr version.
We're on a mission to create a beautifully illustrated, impeccably printed and produced, 140-page, 8.5" by 11" hardcover-bound comic book anthology that interacts with a complementary companion app for iOS and Android devices that will include augmented reality features, games and more. (Yes, that's "complementary" and not "complimentary." However, you do you do look rather nice today.)
So who's the hero of this story?
He’s the Unicycle Champion of the 3rd Northern District, the world record holder for “ice cream sandwiches eaten in one sitting,” the reigning champion of continuous nunchucking and once won a bronze medal for simultaneous stomach rubbing and head patting. Meet KUNG FU ROBOT.
I'm sorry...did you say "Kung Fu...um...Robot?"
Yes we did. Kung Fu Robot is the creation of illustrator/author Jason Bays. It was an idea that he came up with, like, 11 years ago. The concept was to combine a robot’s love of kung fu, his conscientious 9-year old sidekick Marvin’s fear of getting in trouble, android ninjas, a crazy rooster bent on world domination and the pursuit for the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich into an engaging adventure for children of all ages.
So what's with the companion app?
Well, of course kids these days (no, not in that exasperated "kids these days!" sort of way) don't limit their entertainment options to just books or just TV shows or just toys or just games. We know that kids are fearless when it comes to exploring new stories told in new ways. Think mini-games, augmented reality, sound effects...stuff like that. Pretty cool, yeah? And yes! It'll be for iOS and Android-based devices, phones and tablets.
What makes you think kids or adults would even like this?
Well, about a year ago we made the story into an iPad-only app. A really good iPad-only app. Since its release in May 2013, Kung Fu Robot has been downloaded over 250,000 times globally and was named by Parents magazine as one of 2013’s best apps for kids. It quickly hit #3 in the books category in Apple’s US App Store, reached #5 in the newly created Kids category for children ages 9-11 in September, and has gained a notable following in the UK, China, Russia, and the Middle East.
Let's take a step back, though. We mentioned that Jason came up with the idea 11 years ago, right? Well, he also spent a great deal of time trying to get traditional publishers to produce it. Lots of publishers. While he got close with a few of them (like "omigosh, this is GOING to happen" close), it never materialized. So as a last ditch run at getting his story out there, he approached the fine men and women at Propaganda3 to see if they could help.
And help they did.
Wait, so why do you want to make this book?
Honestly, this book was the dream that started it all and we still believe in the power of a physical book to launch a kid's imagination.
Wow. I really like where this is going. What else should we know?
It's all original content. It's all original art. It's fun, funny and engaging but completely family friendly and appropriate for all ages.
So what do I get with each of the different backer tiers?
If you're just looking to get the book and app when they come out, then the $40 to $65 tiers are for you. But if you're looking for really cool extras, like limited edition prints, original and one-of-a-kind sketches from Jason Bays, exclusive access to our the companion app's beta tester program and even a chance to meet the Kid Rocket Studios team, then you should definitely check out the higher tiers. Scroll on...
YES! Everything we receive will directly support the creation, printing, development and delivery of this specific project. Here's what we have in the works:
If we hit $30,000 in backing:
If we hit $60,000 in backing:
If we hit $100,000 in backing:
And what happens if it goes higher than that? Have no fears. We'll figure out ways to make this whole effort EVEN MORE AWESOME.
Risks and challenges
We've spent weeks (and we mean WEEKS) carefully calculating our production costs...the book, the app, fulfillment and mailing costs, our stretch goals, everything. While we've sharpened our pencils a number of times to get to a manageable estimate that balances costs with our desire to produce a quality product, we'd be lying if we said we wouldn't be a little concerned if we only squeak out our base funding goal. We want to hit an 11 on the awesome meter.
(Note: the international measurement for awesome is based on a five-point scale, so we have a pretty lofty goal.)
So how do we manage that risk? Well, we're counting on the generosity of our backers. Every dollar we go past our base funding goal is a dollar we will invest towards ensuring the quality and amplifying the experience of the book and the app.
Beyond that, we have the usual risks associated with print production as well as app production. With regard to print production, we're minimizing risk and maximizing quality by using local Kansas City vendors. We believe in working with quality individuals with whom we have established relationships and can stand face-to-face with in order to mitigate potential issues. We balance that external risk by pairing it with the comfort and reliability of our in-house app development capabilities.
We've done our homework and while we can't say that this is a zero-risk venture, we believe we have the right internal and external team to make this happen no matter what may pop up along the way.
Now we just need you to believe in us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
