DOING FOR GOSPEL MUSIC WHAT AMY WINEHOUSE AND RAPHAEL SAADIQ DID FOR OLD SCHOOL SOUL!!!!
We want to make a great gospel record influenced by the genre now referred to as neo-soul, making Christian music with a hip approach that will appeal to both a younger audience as well as long time lovers of old school gospel and soul music. We see this as something lacking from today's Christian music scene. There is such a tremendous wealth of classic gospel sounds from bands of yore that we will draw inspiration from such as: The Staple Singers, Dixie Hummingbirds, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Clara Ward, Blind Boys of Alabama, James Cleveland, Aretha Franklin, and others whose music is to us the most powerful and soulful music that ever was created in America. Of course, it is also the very blueprint, the DNA if you will, for all soul music, and the secularization as this sound exploded in the 50's and 60's.
Yet with the revival of these classic sounds in this millennium, precious few examples seem to have taken our hip nostalgic approach to worship music. Today's Christian music is in large part dominated by what sounds to us a bland assimilation of mid-90's soft rock, etc. Even the churches that perform more traditional gospel type music are largely dominated by musicians with a background in much more modern styles, such as jazz-rock fusion and modern R&B/Funk, rather than the classic gospel and soul music. We have always loved classic blues and soul music from the 50's, 60's and 70's, as well as the gospel music of that era, and with neo-soul being such a hot commodity these days in the hands of artists such as The Dap-Kings, James Hunter, Duffy and the aforementioned, we believe it is time to bring classic SOUL music back where it belongs, in the churches and in your hearts!
Kid and Lisa perform on a regular basis in the San Francisco Bay Area and also internationally as both a duo and with various groups. Their common passion for classic gospel music has given birth to this brilliant concept. They want to record an album of classic as well as original material with a hand selected group of Bay Area music veterans, recorded mostly live, in the old school way.
Once our project is funded we will begin laying tracks immediately! Simultaneously we will begin booking select dates in support of this amazing project, both nationally and internationally!
