There's this myth that each moment is worth a gem. But really, moments are far more precious. Gems are renewable, but moments, moments compose a lifetime.
Fill each of your moments with passion, and your life will be priceless.
Experience a beautiful and always unique world that is filled with dynamic quests and secrets. Colorful characters carry artifacts of great power. Will you aid them in search of a reward, or attempt to steal their loot when they aren't looking? Perhaps you just want to attack them head on. See what happens, curiosity yields results in the land of Beard.
Why is the game called Beard, you ask?
The beard that you see on our current protagonist is more than it seems. Occasionally, in the Land of Beard you will pass fruit trees laden with fruit. When consumed into the beard, these fruit will give the character "magical Beard powers," assisting with both platforming and survival. These fruits persist through death. They are the only aspect of the game that have this property.
What makes Beard different from other platformers of its kind? Isn't this just Spelunky again?
In Beard, we'd like you to feel like you're in a magical world full of interesting places and characters. You'll be able to interact with all of these things in their own different ways. Speak with fairies in the Fairy Den, steal the Glass Jar from the Alchemist, ask the Living Tree his age, return Wall Face his lost glass of juice. These actions will yield different outcomes based on the state of the game, which items you have, and even things like the NPCs mood and the weather.

Beard is a 2D procedurally generated platforming game planned to release on Steam (PC, Mac, Linux) with a few interesting twists. Drawing inspiration from some of our favorite games like Super Mario World, The Binding of Isaac, Dark Souls, and Spelunky (to name a few), Beard features modernized mechanics paired with procedural generation to create a challenging yet rewarding experience that's new each time.
The lands you will be exploring have a history, but it is known to few, for the narrative only exists within objects, both lost and found. The more you understand these objects and how they interact, the better chance you have of deciphering the world. Figuring out what has happened in the past is your best chance to figure out what is still to come...
Each world has a set of dangerous enemies that players must evade or defeat. Survival rates increase with knowledge. Each creature has its own fighting technique and anticipation is key.
As players prevail, the challenge rises.
Beard is currently in its prototype phase and nearing a playable version! It is being designed with various platforms in mind, though our initial release is intended to be on PC via Steam. We have also been accepted by Xbox One, Wii U, and are anticipating approval for PlayStation 4.
Our obstacle has been reaching a critical point where our game play matches what we've envisioned. Each of our items, environments, enemies, and bosses are drawn and animated by hand, frame-by-frame. This certainly takes a lot of time, as each piece needs to be carefully iterated, polished, and integrated.
Seamless online player interaction was one of the original concepts that Beard was founded on and we believe would truly benefit from. Due to the extensive programming involved, it is our first large stretch goal. We really think that this would bring the game play experience to the next level.
Christian is the lead visionary and designer on Beard. He focuses on making sure everything is in its place. Christian believes that beautiful games ought to have an entire world to learn about, and enough depth to awe the player.
When the steps to success are clear, Eric's undying devotion to the obstacle in front of him is immeasurable. You will not, and can not, break his concentration—but let us know if you do; I think he forgot to eat again...
Fools speak because they have to say something; wise men speak because they have something to say. Thayne's voice is our team's voice of reason. Always objective, always accurate. If he's speaking, let's hope you're listening.
Matt has been making games with Eric since he was 13 (Classic Wars & Rogue RPG). They found success with micro-transactions before smart phones existed. If you're wondering whether or not he knows "that language"....he probably does.
A master with both the digital and physical paintbrush, Dane is responsible for the vast majority of art in the game. From concept art to sprite sheets, he holds everything he creates to the highest standards.
Matt has a Beard! He also happens to be a seasoned animator who's helping us all the way from Australia. Matt showed an early interest in Beard and has been a driving force in making the game come alive ever since.
Donnie is more concerned about the spacing and font on the menu than what he’s eating for dinner. Observing the subtleties can have its advantages. Donnie and Christian often bounce ideas to confirm they’re reasonable.
Joe has been a music enthusiast his entire life. Improv or composition, he's ready to play. When he's not riding on his unicycle, or growing vegetation, you can bet he's jamming on the guitar or playing games with friends.
The songs don't yet have titles, but the mp3s do have names. If that doesn't make sense, it should soon.

Risks and challenges
From the earliest sketches, the vision for Beard has grown full, and with it, so has our passion. This project is something that we've wanted to dedicate all of our time to for a long time, and now that we may have that opportunity, we're extremely excited.
Because of how large the project has grown, we can already see a potential pitfall in feature creep, which may lead to a delayed release if we are not careful. However, to mitigate risk, we've worked hard nailing down our internal timeline and carefully budgeted the time this funding will support us for.
Of course no undertaking is without its difficulties, and unforeseen challenges will almost certainly arise—but we have confidence in our programmers', artists', and musician's abilities to fulfill our vision and complete the game.
Physical rewards are already lined up, so don't worry about that.
An investment in Beard is an investment in us, and it will be treated as such. We are eternally grateful for your support and we promise to return the favor.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
