About

We have had to cancel our HydraDock Roadie campaign because Kickstarter will not allow our team to run two campaigns at once. We have a client obligation to run a campaign for the SoloAmp Personal Sound Column. Forced to choose between the two campaigns, that campaign must be run, and this one must be shut down.

We are accepting pre-orders for the HydraDock Roadie under the same terms that would have been available with this Kickstarter campaign, if you want to visit our HydraDock web site and place a pre-order there.

Thank you so much for your support! And, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience!

The team that brought you the HydraDock desktop USB-C dockthe world's first and only actually shipping standards compliant USB 3.1 dock — now brings you the world's first and only actually completed USB-C USB 3.1 standards compliant pocket hub — the Roadie. The product shown here is completed and ready for mass production today. No excuses. No nonsense.

Because we spent over a year developing our 13 port desktop dock, making a tiny 6 port pocket hub was simple for us. The product you see here is 100% complete, and ready for immediate mass production. We will ship all rewards within 4 weeks of the campaign end.

Mobile Connectivity

Most of the time the Bluetooth and WiFi wireless systems in your 12 inch MacBook can get you the mobile connectivity you need. But, the reality is that there are still dark corners of the world where wires are used — for displays and projectors, for Ethernet networks, and for all manner of older USB peripherals. To make full use of our cool little MacBooks, we need some way to connect to those wires.

The Roadie

The Roadie is the size of a credit card, with a short USB-C male cable on one end for connecting to a 12 inch MacBook, and a female USB-C port on the other end for plugging in a MacBook power adapter.  One side has an RJ45 jack for gigabit Ethernet, and an HDMI jack that handles up to 4K displays. Note that this HDMI jack is HDCP compliant, so it will play HDCP copy protected rented or purchased content, such as from iTunes, Amazon, and other online sources.

The other side has a pair of state of the art USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports that deliver 5Gb/sec. bandwidth and 900mA of power.

Beware Junk Products!

We want to alert anyone that there is a flood of junk, misrepresented China made "USB-C" hubs out there - even appearing on Kickstarter. These are NOT standards compliant products, and they do not deliver many of the specs they promise (like 10Gb/sec speed, for which no hub controller chips even yet exist!). We are not aware of a small hub with an HDCP copy protection compliant HDMI port - meaning, you cannot watch HDCP rental or download files from iTunes or Amazon or other sources with these products.

There are presently very few chip makers shipping silicon for true standards compliant USB 3.1 Gen 1 peripheral products. As a leader in this new space, we have earliest access to these components.

Charge The MacBook Or Not

The Roadie provides full functionality either with or without being connected to a MacBook power adapter. Plugging in the power adapter charges your MacBook. Not plugging in the adapter runs the Roadie off your MacBook's battery. The Roadie uses a tiny amount of power from your MacBook when not using the power adapter, so has only negligible impact on your MacBook battery life.

About This Campaign

We are KickShark, Inc., a public benefit corporation in Nashville Tennessee engaged in product development, manufacturing, and marketing, and in teaching and supporting these activities to other makers, designers, and entrepreneurs.

Over the past 2 years we have aggressively developed the engineering and manufacturing resources to compete at the top of the new USB Type C product space, with our first product, the HydraDock 13 Port Dock, going onto Kickstarter last spring and now shipping. The HydraDock was a hugely difficult project because it required 100% new circuit design, using all new components, for which no reference designs or even firmware existed. We fought through every obstacle and now have a shipping product.

HydraDock got us the knowledge, designs, components, and supply chain in place to now make any subset of its ports into a new product with no real effort or risk. The Roadie repurposes the USB-C, USB 3.1, HDMI, and Ethernet IP already developed and shipping in the HydraDock. And, over time, we will bring more such "subset products" to market.

Risks and challenges

It's not rational to say, "There are no risks." However, with all of the advance work already done by the KickShark team getting HydraDock Roadie fully ready for market, we can see no reasonable risks to meeting our March shipping date for rewards.
