Brass is a new choice in women's fashion. We're cutting out the middle(wo)man: working directly with our expert factory, and selling directly to our customer exclusively online. The result? Beautiful dresses that don't break the bank.

Brass dresses are designed with two things in mind: a neutral palette and an effortless silhouette. High-quality construction, beautiful fabrics, and versatility are our mainstays. The Spring/Summer 2015 Collection maintains these values and is an extension of the core collection. The new line consists of five pieces, made with the warmer months in mind, yet can be easily layered and worn throughout the year.
Katie Doyle and Jay Hallstein met when they were 14 years old. Little did they know that their friendship would turn into a business partnership another 14 years later. Fast forward to 2013. Katie and Jay both shared the dream of owning their own business. They were becoming increasingly frustrated by the fashion industry:
- Fast fashion that falls apart after one-wash? What a waste.
- Designer dresses that cost half your rent? No thanks.
- Mainstream brands that run supposed "sales" every other week? We're smarter than that.
With Jay's experience in apparel manufacturing, and Katie's background in ecommerce, they put their skills together to start Brass.
We design and develop all of our garments in-house. We work directly with our expert factories in Hangzhou, China to source beautiful fabrics and manufacture our dresses with the highest level of care. We sell our dresses exclusively online to avoid the standard retail markup, and pass the savings on to you, our customer. This business model allows us to sell dresses that rival the quality of designer dresses ($200-$400) at a fraction of the price ($70-$120).
This model is called direct-to-consumer. This term refers to the trend popping up all over e-commerce in which businesses “cut out the middleman.” The idea is that customers get a higher quality product, better shopping experience, top notch customer service and most importantly a better price than traditional retailers. Warby Parker has proven this model with glasses, Harry’s with razors and now Brass is doing it with women’s clothing. We like to say we are cutting out the middle(wo)man.
Brass currently works with two factories located in Hangzhou, China. The business was, in many ways, inspired by one of the factories that Jay visited in 2013. She was so impressed by the quality of workmanship, the attention to detail, and the facility itself. Having visited and worked with multiple factories in the past, Jay immediately saw that this was a stand-out factory. In 2014, they expanded to work with a knit factory that matched these same levels of quality. We personally visit and vet all of our factories to ensure quality, safety, and working standards. We are committed to partnering only with manufacturers that prize and value their employees.
Brass women want to look and feel good, but don’t want to spend an hour in front of the mirror. We've teamed up some awesome bloggers over the past seven months who feel the same way.
We launched Brass in September 2014 with 5 basic styles. We have added 3 new styles since our launch. Over the last 7 months we lived up to our promise of providing high-quality without high markup. Here's what a few of current customers have to say:
"I wanted to compliment your great company and wonderful dresses. I now own 4 of the dresses you currently offer, and am really impressed with the quality and design. (And top shelf customer service!) I love the simplicity and versatility of your line, and all of the dresses are great for my work environment." – Janice N.
“Brass delivers on exactly what it promises-high quality, value, style and a seamless customer experience. I’ve gotten so much use out of my Shirt Dress- great for dressing up or down. I look forward to shopping at Brass again soon!" – Christina D.
“Amazing! The fit is excellent and the fabric is soft and comfortable. Best fitting dress I’ve owned. Please make more!” – Traci M.
Risks and challenges
We have worked with our factories for more than a year. We have produced more than 1,000 garments with them during this time. Based on this experience, we are confident in our ability to deliver product in July 2015.
If our Kickstarter is successful, we will be visiting our factories again before production begins. We will record and share our experiences with all of our backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
