KHOI is community radio being built for Central Iowa. $12,000 completes the broadcast studio for programming created by local talent.
Local radio is a long-lost love here in central Iowa and we are bringing radio home again with KHOI.
KHOI is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. The mission is to “build community through communication.” The vision is to celebrate our local community and welcome all voices, regardless of their perspectives, to freely discusses issues, nourish the spirit and to entertain.
Ames, Iowa and the surrounding villages and farms are rich with talent in many areas: academics, arts, music, business, and working the land. We want to give voice to all of these. We are building community radio for a good future. There are differing points of view in Central Iowa. In these times, expression of these differences can be intense but we want to hear what our neighbors have to say. Only then can we hope to understand and appreciate the challenges they face and the talents they possess.
With a world-class, land-grant university located in Ames, Iowa, people from all over the world come to Ames to teach, work at and attend Iowa State University. Conversely, people from Ames travel out into the world, gathering interesting experiences wherever they go. We want to connect with you by calling you and putting you on our airwaves and have you hear us online.
The FCC permit for this full-power community radio station was acquired in 2009. Many, many local volunteers from all walks of life have come together, working to get KHOI on the air by the deadline imposed by the Federal Communications Commission: August 2012. To date, we have raised $60,000 for equipping our broadcast tower site. $12,000 raised through Kickstarter will enable KHOI to complete the building process with a broadcast studio for live programming from the Ames Pantorium Building – one of the most unusual and beloved places in the Ames historic downtown cultural district. Our storefront space welcomes all who come in to collaborate and share energy and dreams. Join us in making history.
