About

The kiwi cup is a kind of egg cup designed for eating kiwifruit in a convenient way. The design is made to scoop out a kiwi without the juice scattering around. The cup is made of silicone so kiwi's of all sizes can be used. Silicone can be used in the dishwasher and is 'food friendly'.

But the most important part: my daughter (the girl in the video) now really likes to eat the very healthy kiwifruit (more vitamin C than an equivalent amount of orange), she calls it the 'kiwi flubber'.

The cup looks like a flower and because it makes it a fun tool for the little ones to use and thus encouraging them to eat more kiwifruit. Also the flower shape helps to 'catch' the juice drops falling from the spoon (it's a cup and a dish in one). I made a model of clay and used silicone to make a prototype (see picture below). By using silicone it is a flexible tool and through the 'stickiness' of the material you get a good grip on the kiwifruit so that it doesn't turn around in the cup.

The project steps are:

Step 1 - Creating a 3D CAD design of the kiwi cup model. The model is needed for the mold which is the most expensive part of the project.

Step 2 - Contact a company to make a simple, i.e. single mold. I addressed some companies and got some quotes already.

Step 3 - Because I contacted a Chinese company I will ask for a prototype before production in batch will start. I expect one or two iterations are needed before production can start.

Step 4 - Shipping the kiwi cups in a happy flower color.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge is the creation of the unique mold. I made some more technical drawings and sent it to 3 company's. They told me a mold can be made, but I've no experience in how fast this process will go.
