Are you a book lover? Do you gaze lovingly at embossing, run fingers over hardbacks or stare whimsically at full colour A4 comic books with joy?
I know I do.
My name is Tab, and I've spent the last 3 years writing a comic series called Shades of A. If you haven't read it head on down to DiscordComics- it's all free and the final page went up at the end of August.
It's a queer retelling of the notorious 50 shades of Grey, but with positive representation and a sense of humour. The story is about a guy called Anwar, an asexual with a romance movie addiction, being dragged to a kink night by his best friend JD, a genderqueer gentleperson with a bow tie fetish. In the club Anwar meets Chris, a middle aged transvestite with sparkly pink shoes and a matching personality. The comic goes through some infamous scenes in the original book, then the plot meanders to somewhere a lot more meaningful.
A year ago you lovely people got together and helped me print book 1, and through stretch goals proved that you wanted another year of the story. It's been a great year and because of the backers I've managed to write about Anwar coming out to his family, Chris' kids, work discrimination and lots of other juicy things that wouldn't have existed without your support. Now these comics need a home in print.
Shades of A is an adorable book, perfect for picking up, flicking through and shoving it at friends like 'READ THIS, YOU WILL UNDERSTAND'. Come what may with this kickstarter I'll be printing Shades After in A5, and they will make a snuggly sweet pair on your book shelf.
But kickstarters are about making something special, and together, we're gonna make something special.
The Shades of A Omnibus. It'll be twice the thickness, double the size, carefully selected in pink linen finish and embossed in GOLD.
It will be limited to a set of 150, numbered and signed and made of gorgeousness.
As well at the usual character bios and extras, the omnibus will feature a dedication page with the name of every single person who supports the kickstarter and the larger your pledge, the larger your name.
Due to new VAT legislation in the UK I can't sell PDF's for money overseas, but what I can do is offer them for free with all physical rewards over £5. It adds a more personal touch anyway.
You can also add £9 on to any reward to add a softback of either book 1 or 2. Perfect for people who want a matching set on the shelf along with their omnibus or missed the last kickstarter- it's slightly below the RRP because I think it's important not to treat crowdfunding as a donation drive and I want you all to get a good deal for supporting the project early.
Last time I made a lot of merchandise to go with the comic, but this time around it's all about the book itself. However I have made something very, very special for the higher tiers.
I'm willing to make up to 5 of these little fluff balls for the £150 tiers- each one filled with all of the hate you'd expect from POOF, the happiest cat in the world.
This is the most I've ever asked for as a kickstarter goal, mainly because holy shit hardback full colour printing is expensive. Here's where all the money will be going:
Any money over £6000 will start going towards my wages, which means the stretch goals are all about adding in more content, which benefits everyone!
£7000 - extra comic added to the book about Chris visiting Anwar's house for dinner.
£8000- extra comic added to the book about Anwar and Chris' family going to the Natural History Museum.
£9000- The hardback run is increased to 200 copies so more people can get on board!
Risks and challenges
This is my third kickstarter (third times a charm!) and I delivered all of the previous ones on time, despite going 400% over the original goal of the first Khaos komix one.
If we hit the stretch goals of extra comics I'll have to delay sending to the printers while I draw them, but I'm hoping to get these books sent out to you by Christmas time at the latest.
I send the books out via regular airmail to keep costs down, if anyone loses their order I resend them with tracking to make sure it arrives.
I've not dealt with hardback printing before but the samples I've been sent from the company are fantastic, and it's a uk based printer so worst case scenario I'll turn up at the door and demand my books.
Of course there's always the possibility of illness or wrist fractures, but I'll always keep you up to date with what's going on so you won't be left in the lurch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
