In November 2016 we funded Minority Monsters, a spotters guide to Alphabet Soup Land and the LGBT+ Queer creatures you can find there. You can click on the pages below to read a pdf sample of the book:
It's suitable for ages 12+ (has a few swears and general blunt language dealing with gender and sexuality) and features creatures such as the Bisexual Unicorn, Genderqueer Merperson, and of course, the Asexual Succubus.
The comics originally ran on Discord Comics here, but the book added information sections correcting common myths, guides to Seas of Alternative Gender, and lots of other neat stuff. It turned a gag strip comic into a helpful resource, both for those wishing to learn about LGBT+ issues and those who have been there, done that, got the t-shirt and want to read about characters like them.
After a year of battling an evil printer to no avail, finding a new supplier and packing hundreds of beautiful books, finally the quest was over and we could all live happily ever after....
So MANY people wanted to visit alphabet soup land that we’re running out of books! And that’s where I need your help…
Mini minority monsters! It’s a traveller's guide to gender and sexuality, with all the fun of the first book, squeezed down into an easy to carry paperback.
As well as all the queer creatures of the first book there will be some updated sections which includes:
- More Demi/Grey-A information
- Better laid out the transgender section with some more illustrations
- A Pride Flag guide with all the colours
- History of pride as a protest
- Cover reprinting costs for a softback edition
- Fund an audiobook so you can listen on the move and make the project accessible to those who don't use visual guides
Make use of the misprinted copies
The biggest slice is pure printing costs, followed by shipping, money to pay other people to help with the audio book, kickstarter fees, and a contingency fund which was very helpful to me last time with the misprinted copies.
It’s a sad story, but the first printer I used for these books messed up the page order and refused to take responsibility for it. I used my own money to reprint the books with a different printer plus £500+ in court and bailiff fees. I won the case but they phoenixed their company, leaving an empty shell and a bunch of unhappy, out of pocket customers like me.
To try and make a positive spin on it I’ve been donating the misprinted books charities, youth groups etc, anyone who could make use of them and doesn’t mind that the pages are a bit squiffy. I’m also using them to create the Adopt-a-monster prints so I can give some parts of them a home.
Which brings us to our first reward!

I'm Tab and I've been a regular visitor to Alphabet Soup Land since I was a mini monster.
I’ve been writing LGBT+ Queer comics for 11 years now after a brief stint at being an accountant. My other works include Khaos Komix, an LGBT coming of age epic, Shades of A, an A-typical romance between an asexual and a kinkster, and Sir, Butler and Boy, a filthy glimpse into the secret lives of three victorian men.
Minority Monsters started out as a joke on how Bisexuals are as invisible as Unicorns and then evolved from there. It just shows you that you never know where your adventures will take you.

Risks and challenges
I've successfully funded and fulfilled five other kickstarters, so you know that come what may I will get your rewards to you.
When I had issues with the misprinted copies in the first Minority Monster book I kept backers informed all the way through. Then instead of waiting for a lengthy legal battle to sort itself out I used my savings to reprint with another company.
In short, I do not mess around.
The biggest issue with comic projects is always printers but I'll be using the same printer that did an amazing job on my last two books. We'll be fighting the rush for printing by Christmas but I've allocated time for that and been reasonable with my timescales.
A reprint is always going to be harder to get off the ground than the initial excitement of a new book, but I've made sure there are rewards for both old and new fans of the series.
