About TASTE

TASTE With Kevin Longa (or TASTE, for short) is a documentary series featuring the true stories of food entrepreneurs around the world.

Why create TASTE?  

We live in a fragmented world. With TASTE, we hope to buck the trend in a small way.

TASTE tells the stories of the people who make our food.

Like nothing else in the world, food and stories have the ability to bridge divisions and forge understanding. Daily we hear news stories of war and conflict between fellow human beings. I have had the fortune of swapping stories over meals only to find that people - no matter where they're from - have more in common than they do differences.

I hope TASTE's food stories can bind a connection and foster understanding. With TASTE, I probably won't create total world peace. However, it'll be a small step towards the right direction.

The Story Behind TASTE

Who would have thought I was about to discover stories of sacrifice, love and creativity - all in the name of gastronomy?

It was 2013. The bags were packed - the bank account drained. On the road with nothing but a camera and an appetite, I learned that all food entrepreneurs have a story they're passionate to share — from Gloria, the poultry queen of Spain, to Rithy, the Cambodian drug addict-turned-master baker. Their food and stories have fueled my filmmaking ever since.

How is TASTE Different?

The biggest difference is that TASTE focuses more on the people who make our food, rather than the food itself.

The TASTE documentary series explores a side of cooking that is more raw, real and personal than most food and travel shows. You will not learn how to bake a cupcake with TASTE or where to find the most budget-friendly pasta on your next trip to Tuscany. 

Instead, TASTE will whisk you away on an adventure behind kitchen doors. Each episode reveals a unique, true story of a food hero. Everything here is real: chefs, farmers, food designers, ingredients and stories.

Bio - My Story

Behind the bio | My story with TASTE: I began making films ever since I was a jolly, fat, little eight-year-old. It wasn't until a wake-up call at the hospital that I realized I needed to shape up, learn about where my food came from and who made it. Between film club meetings and swim practice at Burlingame High School, I hit the farms and food markets to create my first food documentary. Since then, my life has been an exploration of food and, more importantly, the people who make it.

When I graduated college, it was the bleakest point of the economic crisis, and I kept getting job application rejection after rejection. In fact, I literally cried after getting rejected from Google. So I decided to pursue my passion (TASTE) full-time, and learn about the job creators themselves: entrepreneurs. It's been a crazy journey with highs, lows and risk. But all of it has been worth it to film and collaborate with some wonderful food entrepreneurs and people. Thank you.

I’ve taken care of the most expensive and challenging milestones: all pre-production research, planning, traveling and filming is complete for the first part of the TASTE Trilogy - TASTE: Europe. This includes nine documentary short films (3-7 minutes), each about a different European food entrepreneur.

The entire TASTE journey so far has amounted to over $25,000 of my personal savings, 6,000 hours of work and the help of many generous friends.

I'd be honored if you joined us for the final leg of the journey as we raise funds for post-production.

Where your money is going: The Post-Production Process (Editing)

Post-production is a large part of filmmaking that often goes overlooked. We make each episode of TASTE with love and the many vital steps of post-production: 

These are time-consuming and expensive processes. Thankfully, I've completed organizing all of the footage (which took 500+ hours and the help of a dozen interns), and I've shot and edited all of the TASTE films so far. Handling all aspects of the film process has certainly been a fun challenge, and this experience will guarantee the completion of the project. However, my favorite part of filmmaking is the creative collaboration and teamwork that goes into our craft.

Therefore a portion of funds raised will go to an additional film editor. If you want to join the TASTE team in other ways, then please back this project.

TASTE: Beyond the Plate episodes

I will complement each main episode of TASTE with a debriefing episode called “TASTE: Beyond the Plate.” I’ll share my food story and lessons learned while filming with the food entrepreneurs in TASTE. Here's an intro teaser video:

Distribution

Once post-production is complete, I will share these films with various short form (a.k.a. 30-minutes or less) media channels, platforms and distribution networks. The people who make our food influence so many aspects of our lives - around the world. Therefore, I want to share their stories as widely as possible. Risks and challenges

I intend to release TASTE: Europe in Spring 2016. The most expensive and complex hurdles have been cleared. Now it's a matter of post-production editing. Since I've had over a decade of film and editing experience, I am confident that I will be able to take the project into this final step.

DELAYS: There is a chance the series may not come out until after Spring 2016. Since I'm (for the most part)* a one-man team, I've had to rely upon perseverance and patience to see this project through. Many times I must focus upon aspects of the project that fall outside the realm of filmmaking - yet still require quality time - such as this Kickstarter campaign (full-time job), fulfilling rewards, legal paperwork and further fundraising (full-time job). I have a grander vision for TASTE beyond the TASTE: Europe series, and it will require further funds (and fundraising) to go beyond the immediate post-production process.

This campaign will finance an Editor who will speed up this post-production process, and take TASTE to the next level.
