About

The KettleBaby Story

KettleBaby is based on a simple truth: having a kid makes it harder to get to the gym, but it shouldn't mean the end of parents' exercise.  The product emerged from the joyful exhaustion of early parenthood, with the love for our new baby barely keeping us sane through countless sleepless nights, poopy diapers, missed workouts, and completely reprioritized routines.

My wife and I had always enjoyed an active lifestyle, but it became so hard to keep up any sort of fitness routine as a new parent.  Trying to squeeze a workout into the busy day meant sacrificing precious family time.  Staying involved as a parent and helpful as a spouse left so little time for exercise.  We were deciding between spending time with our kettlebells or spending time with our baby.  Then it hit me.  What if there was a way to get a total-body workout while interacting with my child in a fun, and meaningful way?

I knew I was onto something when my son started giggling uncontrollably during our first workout.  As he grew, he began asking for KettleBaby explicitly and encouraging me to keep going during workouts - "Again!  Again!  Again!"  I certainly never expected any free personal training out of it, but I'll take it!  As a parent, it's so much easier to exercise when your kid demands it and it means extra sleep or "me time" for your partner.

Kids love KettleBaby, but the fitness dimension for parents is real too.  Here are just some of the exercises we incorporate in our KettleBaby routine.  Follow us @KettleBaby on Instagram for more ideas or DM us with some of your own.  We'd love to see what you come up with!

  • Lunges (forward, backward, side)
  • Squats
  • Rows
  • Overhead press
  • Bicep curls
  • Seated core rotations
  • Inclined bench press
  • Lateral twists

Since the first device came off the sewing machine, we've iterated and iterated, creating and testing over 20 different prototypes in perfecting the product.  The design is inspired by rock-climbing harnesses and features sturdy under-butt straps that emerge from the device above the child's hip and are threaded through a grip-friendly handle, before being anchored at the top of the device.  While intended for children between five months and 50 lbs (~23 KG), KettleBaby is currently undergoing safety testing to ensure the device can handle loads in excess of 100 lbs.

Years in the making, KettleBaby is now on the cusp of full-scale production.  We're both humbled and thrilled that you would consider supporting our project and helping parents reintroduce fitness into their busy lives.

KettleBaby Rewards

We are excited to offer our backers a variety of rewards.  While we are committed to manufacturing our KettleBaby fitness devices in the USA, some of our swag (hats, shirts, onesies) may be manufactured abroad.  Swag size and style selections will be collected via survey once KettleBaby reaches its fundraising goal.

Risks and challenges

KettleBaby is a physical product subject to all of the complications and potential delays inherent to supply chain, manufacturing, and quality assurance processes.  From 3D-designers, to injection molders, to canvas suppliers, and cut-and-sew partners, there will be dozens of people required at various stages to make KettleBaby a success.  Timely completion of any one human's work is not guaranteed.  Our decision to work with USA-based partners should increase the likelihood of on-time delivery by reducing both communication latency and shipping times for various materials and components.

While the design is virtually final, a portion of the Kickstarter proceeds will be used to improve the handle construction, which has evolved from a segment of garden hose, to mountain bike handles, to the current foam-grip-on-PVC version. While the most recent design worked great for children under 20 lbs, the foam grip and PVC can start to separate under 30+ lb loads and over multiple reps. To fix the issue, we are working with CAD experts, 3D printers, and custom injection molding professionals to develop a new single-component handle which will be made from a rigid rubber material and optimized for KettleBaby function.

While we have already engaged a specialty testing lab accredited through A2LA and accepted by the Consumer Protection Safety Commission to test KettleBaby's physical capabilities, chemical properties and Soft Infant and Toddler Carrier safety standards (AST F2236), these tests cannot be completed until the new injection-molded handles are finished and the lab can test a final version of the KettleBaby device.  The sequential nature of these (and other) steps in the production process further heightens the risk of delay.

KettleBaby's at-scale production is at risk of cost overruns.  The fixed cost of the injection molding alone is estimated at over $15,000.  While a minimum volume of 500 KettleBaby devices should bring unit costs into a viable range, KettleBaby's final landed cost is unknown and subject to a wide range of dispersion.  One drawback of producing KettleBaby in the USA is the significantly higher cost of labor versus partnering with overseas manufacturers.  While this requires KettleBaby to be sold at a higher price point, we believe the quality of manufacturing, communication through the production process, and opportunity to create jobs in American communities is worth it. Of course, if KettleBaby fails to reach its fundraising goal, all contributed money is returned to the initial backers.

KettleBaby is not intended for children under 5 months or over 50 lbs. Please consult your child's pediatrician before using KettleBaby. Please see additional safety information at https://kettlebaby.com/pages/safety
