The first and most important goal has been reached! The project is funded! Now I'm turning my attention to the Stretch Goal. Every dollar raised from now on will help museums and institutions that host exhibits strengthen their own mission. Thank you for taking a few minutes to become familiar with the project.
Here's the story:
It is time for me to pursue a larger audience for the work I've created. My purpose for making the images has always been to participate in and engender further conversation about the horror of the Holocaust and the continued suffering that ignorance, fear, prejudice and hatred create. Read the full story of the origin of the project here: www.lossandbeauty.com
In order to reach a larger audience in the most impactful way, I need to print, mat, and frame the images (between 18 and 24 pieces at 30w x 24h, matted and framed) to prepare them for exhibitions on two continents. Each institution will have the opportunity to create an exhibition that meets their needs and space availability.
I also need to print the exhibition catalog that will be made available at wholesale to the museums and educational institutions. The 72 page full color catalog will have all the images from the project as individual plates as well as original essays and poetry that I created during my trips to Eastern Europe.
I am planning an initial print run of 300 copies. Proceeds from the sales of this catalog will help the museums and education centers to pursue their own missions of education and awareness. My hope is that the work will have a greater impact in this way. Subsequent print runs to lower the unit cost of the catalog may be financed by a stretch goal (STRETCH GOAL ADDED, 4/30, full details below!) and by sales of the catalogs, at the wholesale level, to participating museums and institutions.
I have funded nearly all the travel (six trips to Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland over 5 years), work, and website creation to date. Now I need your help. We need not look far to see and hear the news of suffering and destruction created by hate that is present in nearly all corners of the globe.
Seventy years have passed since the end of World War II, and yet, hearts filled with intolerance, hatred and racism continue to kill and maim, to effect terror and suffering.
Our only hope lies in awareness and thoughtful engagement. These images are my effort to keep the flames of compassion, tolerance, respect and brotherhood alive.
Reflecting and creating beauty, fierce beauty, especially in the face of horror, can help sustain the light and eventually dispel the darkness.
But I need your voice too! By sharing this project you are helping me to create the audience. By sharing the project, you become part of the conversation. Please join me.
You can read much more about the inspiration for my project, browse the blog with poetry and news items, and perhaps most importantly, see all the images here: www.lossandbeauty.com
Read the interview and see a gallery of images on RFoto Folio! I am incredibly happy to be included in this community of fine art photographers. The images are finding their audience!
Here is the breakdown for the allocation of funding:
NEW STRETCH GOAL!
With the astounding response that the project has received, I have decided to add a stretch goal of $6,500. I have two objectives to achieve: funding the production of 1,000 copies of the exhibition catalogue and funding the beginning of the travel for Part 2 of the project.
By committing to printing 1,000 copies of the catalogue, I can achieve a tremendous cost savings per unit. Offering the catalogues to the museums and institutions at this lower cost will enable them to better fund their own missions. In this way, I can support the conversation we've begun in a much broader way.
It has been clear to me since my visit to the shtetls north of Cracow, that I need to photograph further east and north. I need to go to Eastern Poland, into Belarus and the Ukraine and then north into Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The story of what happened long before the extermination camps came into being must be told. It is a subject that gets little attention and yet, more death and destruction occurred here than what was perpetrated in the death camps.
Millions of victims perished in forests and ravines, in cemeteries that were later destroyed and in numberless, nameless mass graves. The Bloodlands of Europe have been largely silent. I want to give voice to their stories. To do this, I need your help.
By adding this stretch goal of an additional $6,500, I can achieve both of these worthy objectives. I need your support, your help to spread the word. THANK YOU to all my backers and supporters. Your voices will be heard and they will get stronger as the exhibition travels. This is just the beginning!
About the prints:
I have enlisted the knowledge and prodigious talents of master printer Mark Muse to create the exhibition images as well as all the prints for the limited edition portfolios. Mark’s prints must be seen, in person, to be appreciated for all the lush nuance and brilliance he brings to a worthy image.
I am grateful and proud to be creating these images with Mark.

Risks and challenges
I have considerable promotion and outreach in process to attract and secure multiple locations for exhibitions, both in the United States and Europe. Respected photography blogs and sites are sharing the project, conducting interviews, and helping me promote the work across the fine art world.
But I need you too! By sharing this project you are helping me to create the audience! By sharing the project, you become part of the conversation.
I do not anticipate any risk with creating the exhibition or fulfilling the rewards for the project. The images are being made with the help of master printer Mark Muse, to insure the quality of the exhibition prints as well as the limited edition prints offered as rewards.
I have 20 years experience in bookmaking and in the printing industry. I am using a firm for production of the books that has the highest quality rating attainable and am working with trusted colleagues from my days in that industry. I have set aside the entire month of July from my teaching and shooting schedule to produce and fulfill all the rewards.
And with years of experience in mentoring as well as creating luxurious and engaging photo tours, I am confident that all my supporters will receive tremendous value for their donations.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
