Sword of the Stars: Control! is a lively, competitive card game for 3-5 players.
Based on the races and places of an epic science fiction universe, the game is played at a lightning pace. Alien armies invade and seize precious jewel worlds, and are in turn conquered by ever-larger armies of new invaders. Spies, saboteurs, shields, colonists, assassins and planetary NUKES fly, as the Players battle for CONTROL!
A full game of Sword of the Stars: Control! can usually be played in 30-60 minutes.
Sword of the Stars: Control! is in the news!
The Base Game box comes with everything you see here!
Lay the six Planet Cards out on the table with their Civilian Population clips set to level 1.
Set aside the Cease Fire card and shuffle the Army Cards and the SpecOps Cards together into one deck.
Deal 30 cards from the shuffled deck into a small pile and shuffle the Cease Fire card into the mix.
Put the mini-deck with the Cease Fire card at the bottom of the big deck.
Deal each player at the table a hand of three cards.
The player who most recently watched a space opera movie or television show begins the game!
Every Player's turn has four possible phases: Draw, Invade, Special Operations, and Discard.
Draw 2 cards at the beginning of each turn. You must always draw 2, even if you have a full hand.
Use your Army Cards to Invade and seize control of the Planet Card which bears the same symbol. After a successful Invasion, move the Planet Card in front of the player who has seized control.
To take a Planet from another player, you must have Army Cards which are greater than the value of the garrison holding the Planet. If you defeat the garrison cards, they are removed from the Planet and the Civilian Population of the planet is moved up by the number of defeated cards.
Defeated Army Cards are then placed in the discard pile.
As successive Invasion forces grow larger and larger, the civilian population will increase, and the value of the Planet as an imperial prize will increase accordingly.
The only way that a smaller invasion force can take over a contested Planet is by destroying its Army Cards and/or civilians using Special Operations.
At any time after drawing and before discarding, you may play a SpecOps Card. SpecOps Cards can be played before, during or after an Invasion. The only SpecOps card which is played during another player's turn is the Point Defense card, which prevents the destruction of the planet by the Nuke card. Point Defense is the only instant-use card in the game.
When you have taken all possible actions for your turn, you are at the Discard phase. You cannot have more than seven cards in your hand at the end of your turn. If you do have more than seven, you must discard cards until you have seven or less. The number and type of cards to Discard is the player's choice.
When you have completed your Discard, play passes to the person on your left.
We've been playing Sword of the Stars: Control! all over North America for the last year! Our most recent convention was GenCon 2018, where we played Sword of the Stars: Control! and THE PIT: The Board Game in the First Exposure Hall. We had a fantastic experience at GenCon, with packed tables at every session and a fantastic opportunity to interact with our fellow developers and the many game manufacturers and prototype services that make this hobby possible.
If we met you at GenCon--hello again, and thank you for supporting our campaign!
We've also had a great time and met a lot of great players at other conventions...
We loved the Terminal City Tabletop Convention in Vancouver, BC, Gamestorm in Portland, GameX/Strategicon in Los Angeles, the Origins Games Fair in Columbus Ohio, and GenCon 2018, as well as many smaller local events.
If you've played Sword of the Stars: Control! at one of our live play sessions, please leave us a comment! We enjoy hearing from you guys.
