On June 12th, Row Gallery will launch its first show during the Los Angeles Art Walk on 6th and Spring.
CHANGING THE L.A. ARTS -
With our first show, Row Gallery wants to create a new integrated space that helps emerging artists showcase their work alongside industry professionals, providing them with more opportunities. We also want to help enrich the downtown LA community by increasing the amount of creativity that occurs. We hope to set off this movement with our first show, which will be operational the second Thursday of July during Art Walk.
To accomplish our initial goal of setting up a gallery, we have teamed up with the non-profit Lamp Arts Program and the popular DTLA Life magazine. LA Lofts Realty has also graciously allowed us to use their space on the high traffic corner of 6th and Spring to host the event. With such a great team put together, we know Row Gallery has the potential to be awesome with your help!
A GALLERY FOR THE ARTIST -
Row Gallery operates like a non-profit - that means low commission rates so the artist can make higher percentages off the sales of their work (compared to the much higher rates at other galleries). Furthermore, all the commission that we do take will go back into enriching the arts in downtown LA through one of the various non-profits that we work with. Within the next year, Row Gallery plans to host artist talks, auctions, community art events, and even more shows to assimilate art throughout Los Angeles. Within the next five years, Row Gallery wants to provide scholarships and classes to underprivileged artists (children and adults), and teach them the business of art, not just give them money like most scholarship do.
Thus, we aim to become a hub for creatives to network and collaborate while opening up more dialogue between the art world and all others in Los Angeles. Row Gallery will be a space for the arts to thrive by showcasing a wide range of artists, from professional to those who are underprivileged. By placing emerging artists alongside those who are already established, we hope to provide opportunities for the next great group of creatives and expand the art scene in Los Angeles - think East Village New York of the 1980s.
ENRICHING COMMUNITY -
Beyond the arts, our team at Row Gallery recognizes financial disparities, especially in the art world, and seeks to equalize the gallery platform. Artistic talent so often goes undetected, and this has been an increasing problem as the resources for artistic practice fall apart in environments of economic strain.
Through our association with the Lamp Arts Program and other non-profits in downtown, Row wants to focus on strengthening the relationship with the local arts, the homeless community, foster children, and the Los Angeles school districts. Art has the most potential as a communicative medium in which we can spark dialogue for change, express ourselves and find a greater understanding of who we are both as individuals and communities within our immense cityscape
Risks and challenges
Beyond organizing the logistics of the event (insurance, security, and all that fun stuff), the monthly Art Walk usually garners over 20,000 people. Although we will prepare to the best of our ability, managing this amount of foot traffic can be difficult!
