Acerca de este proyecto
Kenny Nelson: Vol I & II is a collection of EPs featuring songs fresh and seasoned from my writing catalogue. Echoing themes of love, loss, and life in general, the songs reflect personal experiences, individual connections, and the lessons learned over the course of a ten year span.
My writing style is very candid and doesn't sugarcoat my life's experiences; you're getting an unfiltered glimpse into my life - struggles included at no extra cost. I found that I feel empowered in exposing my flaws, and that there is something about feeling vulnerable that everyone can relate to. Life isn't always easy, but that's what makes me both nervous and excited about sharing this project: talking about the bad parts is as equally redeeming as talking about the good.
After five years of pushing for a career in music, I found myself questioning for the first time the direction my career was heading. Opportunities came and went, and I found I just didn't know what my plan was anymore. I was unsure of what the next step should be, so I took a year off and allowed myself time to write the songs I wanted to write without filtering them through other peoples' expectations. My goal was to rediscover what I'm doing and why, and during that time the songs I was writing created a newfound vision for the kind of music I wanted to produce. Now more than ever I know who I am, and I feel more settled in who I am not only as a singer and writer, but as a person, as well. What you're hearing in these songs is me.
I spent a lot of time deciding which songs to include on these two EPs, and ultimately settled on ten out of nearly a hundred options for not only their sonically cohesive nature, but also for their representation of me as an artist at this point in my career. There are songs about experiencing the beginning of a relationship...experiencing something like love for the first time; then you have songs which detail the maturation and growth discovered at the end of a relationship. In most of these tracks there is a pattern of learning things not only about other people, but about yourself, too.
I wanted each song to have moments that everyone can relate to in their own way. I think that's what is interesting about putting these songs out: one of the tracks is nearly seven years old and another I wrote just a month ago, but interestingly it all works together.
Production
Josh Colyer (Executive Producer), originally from Detroit, Michigan, was inspired to begin writing music in his later high school years. In the interest of pursuing a career in the music industry, he moved to Nashville where he graduated from Belmont University with a degree in Music Business and Production. With inspiration from artists such as Jon Foreman, Dave Barnes, and Ben Rector, Josh’s music incorporates a pop-rock style with themes of life speculations and relationships.
The Aashrum is a full production recording studio in Greater Detroit, Michigan. Designed by artist and musician, Scott Loudon, its unique architecture and lighting creates a focused, stress-free environment for artists and producers to record and complete their projects. The tools and equipment at the Aashrum exceed industry standards; they provide a wide variety of world-class modern and vintage microphones, preamplifiers, and compressors for superb vocal and instrument translation. Stocked with guitars, drums, keyboards, and ethnic instruments from which the right sounds for each track can be achieved, we are beyond excited to produce Kenny Nelson: Vol I & II at The Aashrum.
Project Costs
$10,000 is A LOT of money, but it is the absolute minimum amount required for the success of this project. How will the funds be distributed, you ask? Check out this nifty info graphic:
Production and studio rental are the brunt of the project needs; recording in a state-of-the-art studio with an extremely talented producer can be costly, but the end product is well worth it. Having a budget to pay additional musicians, promote the albums, and license my music through BMI - one of the top-tier companies for music licensure - is just as important in assuring the highest quality final product.
