10/15/12 - Stretch Goal Reached!  3 New Expansion Boards are Available!

3 New Expansion TinyShields are now available. These new boards are available at every Kickstarter reward level. After you pledge, you will receive a link where you can add these to your Kickstarter reward.

Ethernet - Put your TinyDuino projects on the Internet.  This TinyShield uses an 10/100 Ethernet controller with integrated TCP/IP stack, to make it extremely easy to connect your devices to the Internet.

GPS - An extremely easy to use (and tiny) GPS module for all your positioning needs.  Based on the SiRF Star IV Chipset, this TinyShield is an extremely sensitive 48-Channel receiver (nav engine tracks as low as -163dBm) , supports standard NMEA output, Hot Start of < 1sec, and is ultra low power (between 50uA to 500uA to maintain hot start capabilty.  Includes power supply, integrate chip antenna and level shifters on the board, so you can run your TinyDuino from 2V - 5V. 

WiFi - 802.11b/g/n (yes, even n!) - Connect up all your projects to the Internet very easily.  This TinyShield includes a built in TCP/IP stack, is very low power, includes power supply and level shifters on the board, so you can run your TinyDuino from 3.3V - 5V.  And has an integrated chip antenna on board.

Bluetooth - Bluetooth 2 compatible module, easily lets you communicate wirelessly with your TinyDuino via a standard serial port from your computer.  Includes power supply and level shifters on the board, so you can run your TinyDuino from 3.3V - 5V.

microSD - Add huge storage capability to your projects using microSD cards.  This TinyShield has a microSD connector, along with the power supplies and levels shifters, so you can run your TinyDuino from 3.3V - 5V.

DC Motor Controller for 4 Motors - This TinyShield is perfect for anyone creating small robots.   Built using four of the worlds smallest motor drivers (the TI DRV8837 Motor Driver), this shield will allow for up to 1.8Amps per channel and operates motors between 1.8V to 11V.

We love the Arduino and the Arduino LilyPad - these are the best boards out there for developing quick projects and are very easy to use - even for people with little or no experience in electronics.   But we kept running into projects where they were just too big or expensive, and we heard this complaint from other Arduino users in our local Hackerspace (SYN/HAK in Akron).

We looked at all the other small Arduino boards out there - but they all had drawbacks.  Most were based on smaller, less powerful processors, and all lacked one of the best things about the Arduino platform - expandability through the use of shields.

So we set out to build a tiny platform that had all the power of the Arduino, yet still had easy support for expansion via shields and a lower price than a full Arduino board.

The result is the TinyDuino - a completely Arduino compatible platform smaller than the size of a quarter, yet with all the power and functionality of the Arduino Uno board - including Shield Support!

Each module in the TinyDuino family has been optimized to include only the core circuits for its specific function in order to keep the size extremely small at the best possible price.  The main TinyDuino processor board includes the core processor circuitry, however the USB and DC power regulators have been offloaded to TinyShields.  So, for example, if you have a project that doesn't need support for DC power above 5 volts then you don't need to include the Power TinyShield - saving you money and keeping the overall size down.  Or if you don't need USB on your project, you'd only need one USB TinyShield that you'd use to program your boards - and not waste the money for USB circuitry that goes unused on every single board.

Very Low Cost

Since each board has been optimized to exactly the amount of circuitry needed for its particular function - you don't have to pay for circuitry that you are not using.  Each of the TinyDuino boards have been specifically designed to use high quality yet low cost components in order to keep the final price to you as low as possible. 

Just like on the standard Arduino platform where you can plug in expansion shields to add more features, the TinyDuino allows expansion by using TinyShields.  Whether you want to add communication capabilities (like Bluetooth, WiFi, USB), the ability to read sensors (like temperature and humidity), drive a display or run motors for your swarm of tiny robots - there is a shield for that.  The TinyShield interface uses a low cost, very miniature 32-pin connector which supports all of the signals (plus a few spare) that are supported on the standard Arduino Shield connectors.  And being so compact, the board to board stack-up height is only 3mm, meaning even adding a few TinyShields to your project will still allow for an extremely compact final product.

With being so small, you'd think you need to be an expert with a soldering iron to use these things, right?  Not at all!  We designed these boards to be extremely easy to be used by hobbyists to embed into your projects.  There are multiple prototyping TinyShields available that you can use to interface to your project, including several that use the same 0.100" spacing as used on the standard Arduino platform for shields.  If you're familiar with connecting up to an Arduino today, you'll have no problem using a TinyDuino. 

The main TinyDuino processor board has an optional coin cell battery holder, which supports a CR1612 through CR1632 3.0V coin cell battery.  This is a huge benefit if you have a low power project since it eliminates the need for a cumbersome external battery connector wired in to you project and makes the final package size extremely tiny. 

Different strokes for different folks - each TinyDuino board is available as either a 20mm x 20mm square or 20mm diameter circular board.  The square version includes four mounting holes on each corner to allow firm support if you are mounting the board to something or need to firmly hold down the TinyShields (like in your tiny robots).  The circular version is great when you need to get the smallest possible size - plus it looks cool.  It's also great for applications that require special mechanical packaging - like model rocketry!

Mounting hardware and standoffs are available that can be used with the square boards to help secure them to your projects.

Note: Only the square version is available during this Kickstarter project. However you can easily cut off the corners of the square board to magically make them round.  

So the TinyDuino is just too big?  Or you don't really need the expansion support and want the cheapest possible option?   Try the TinyLily Mini - an extremely tiny Arduino platform smaller than the size of dime!  Inspired by the LilyPad Arduino designed for e-Textiles, the TinyLily Mini is 1/12th the size of LilyPad, yet is has the same horsepower and can run the same LilyPad sketches.  

Designed to be priced under $10 in single piece quantities, the TinyLily Mini enables you to take your e-Textile projects to a whole new dimension.

The TinyLily wouldn't be much without peripherals to go with it.  The TinyLily will work with all the standard LilyPad peripherals already on the market, and we have also designed several new peripherals that will enable you to shrink your projects more than ever before.  

All the TinyLily peripherals are designed with 1.2mm sewtabs which are easy to use with standard conductive thread and needles, and all the boards are washable.

  • TinyLily USB Adapter Board - connects with the TinyLily Mini board to allow it to be programmed with a PC. (19mm x 9mm x 3.35mm)

  • TinyLily Battery Adapter Board - Converts the TinyLily Mini header to a standard JST connector used on many batteries. (16mm x 10mm x 6.23mm), two sewtabs. 
  • TinyLily Motor Driver Board - A tiny 1.8A motor DC motor driver with eight sewtabs (10mm diameter x 1.41mm).  Yes, a washable motor board. That's just how we roll.

Hobbyists also benefit when TinyDuinos are used by commercials makers and businesses - increasing the volume of TinyDuinos made will help decrease the overall price of these boards in the long term, keeping these boards extremely affordable for makers of all types.

TinyCircuits proudly supports open source hardware and have released all the design files for the TinyDuino on our website (all are available today for download).  If you have a great idea for a TinyShield or similar tiny project, you are free to design your own board derived from our design files. 

We've been developing the TinyDuino and TinyLily for the past year and have gone through four major design iterations based on feedback from beta testers. The designs are now well proven out and ready for production.

We have identified several production houses to assemble the boards and all are based in Ohio. Our long term goal is to ramp up our own production facility here in Akron, OH, to help bring jobs to our local community.  If the volumes are high enough during this campaign, we'll use these funds to help kickstart this.

What our Backers will be Doing with Their TinyDuinos:

Long Term Data Logger - PhD student Michael Musgrave is involved in conservation and development for nearly 20 years.  As climate change becomes more important, scientists need to have data to argue their case.  Michael's goal with the TinyDuino is to allow him to build very inexpensive data loggers that researches can deploy to the field, to record sensor data for up to a year.  For more information, please visit the Project section on the TinyCircuits website.

Tiny Quadcopter - A team of five senior design students from California State University, Long Beach) are planning on using their TinyDuino to build a micro quadcopter of less than 5x5 inches.  Their copter will be very inexpensive, and be remotely controlled using TouchOS and Xbee communication.  For more information, please visit the Project section on the TinyCircuits website.

Fitness Platform - Matt Yoder is planning on using TinyCircuits for a variety of different fitness type applications, including a custom pedometer with GPS support for mapping your run, instrumenting a runners shoes to help diagnose runner issues, and to develop a reliable method to track weightlifting activity during a workout.  For more information, please visit the Project section on the TinyCircuits website.

  • We are huge supporters of the Arduino platform and other open source derivatives of the Arduino, including being backers of the very popular Teensy and Digispark projects that were recently on Kickstarter.

    A number of these are great for very simple projects, like the Digispark, which gives you a few I/O and up to 6KB of program space to use. But for a number of projects, this isn't enough, which is why we targeted complete Arduino Uno compatibility.

    There are several major differences between the TinyDuino and the other similar boards out there:

    - The TinyDuino includes the exact same processor (ATmega328P) as the Arduino Uno, which gives you up to 31.5KB of program space to use for your programs, and allows programs written for the standard Arduino to basically be used as is.

    - The TinyDuino supports all of the shield signals that are supported by the standard Arduino.

    - Smaller form factor than the Teensy and Digispark, plus any added shields are only 3mm apart, so the overall project with expansion shields is very compact

    - Mounting options - The TinyDuino has four mounting holes, and mounting hardware (screws, board standoffs, nuts) are available to securely mount the board to you projects and keep the shields securely in place.

    - Low power applications - when used with the coin cell option and 32kHz, the TinyDuino is extremely well suited for very low power projects, such as wireless sensor projects and long term data loggers.

  • Not at all! These boards are entirely designed to both be tiny, yet extremely easy to embed into your projects. For the TinyDuino, there are several different very low cost prototyping TinyShields that break out the Arduino Shield signals to very easy to solder to points. These proto shields use the exact same pin spacing (0.100") as on the standard Arduino Uno, and it's just as easy to hook up a TinyDuino to your project as it is to a standard Arduino.

    For the TinyLily boards, all of these have large sewtabs that are easy to use with conductive thread or to solder to standard wires.

  • Yes - there is an option for a 32kHz, 8MHz (default) or a 16MHz clock source for the main TinyDuino. If you need a clock source different than the 8MHz, please specifiy this on your personal backer page in the notes section.

    However if you do specify 16MHz, you need to have a supply voltage of at least 4.4Volts, so you will not be able to use the coin cell. If you want to use the coin cell, we recommend sticking with the standard 8MHz.

You choose the board color, the text you want to show up, personalized logos, and we'll make them how you want it. You will receive ten working and assembled versions of your custom board. Note: This assumes using the same circuitry as exists on the existing TinyDuino family and does not extend to design work to add new circuitry or functions.
