The Kemistry Team :)
Now, back to the campaign...
What is Kemistry?
For ten years Shoreditch’s Kemistry Gallery has been the UK’s leading exhibition space for cutting-edge graphic design, supporting and showcasing the brightest emerging talents (including Parra, UVA and Geoff Mcfetridge) and classic masters (from Saul Bass and Ken Garland to Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast) alike.
Now, as we face closure following the impending redevelopment of our current home, at Kemistry Gallery we're looking to finance a pop-up exhibition in February 2015, which will be both a celebration of ten years of pioneering graphic design exhibitions, and a pilot for the next phase of Kemistry Gallery’s existence.

Why a pop-up exhibition?
Arts Council England has already committed to support us in our efforts to pilot a new version of the gallery, to coincide with our 10th anniversary. This special exhibition, entitled 'Kemistry Gallery: 10 years 60 works', will be hosted in an East London location, running from the beginning of February and will present highlights from a decade of celebrating the very best of classic and contemporary visual communication, including work by Saul Bass, Milton Glaser, Parra, Jean Jullien, Anthony Burrill and many more.

The pop-up version of Kemistry will also feature a café, a bar and a series of talks by leading design figures, showcasing some of the new features that will be part of the revamped Kemistry Gallery when it reopens later in 2015. There will also be a major new publication on the gallery’s history produced to coincide with the exhibition. (More on the book below!)

'Kemistry Gallery: 10 Years 60 Works' promises to be a truly unique event, not just a taste of things to come with the new permanent Kemistry Gallery, but in itself one of the most ambitious and exciting explorations the past, present and future of graphic design to take place in London for many years.

How the pop-up exhibition might look
We hope something like this...

Kemistry - The Book
We figured if we’re going to think big we might as well think really big, so as part of the campaign we're going to publish a book. A comprehensive history of graphic design told through shows at Kemistry, it will contain contributions, commentary and stories from the founders Graham and Ricky and the artists themselves. It will be a beautiful hard-back edition with quality prints of all the great works (new and old) exhibited over the decade, behind the scenes photos, and words from celebrated commentators.
We're in final talks with a top publisher right now, watch this space for exciting news on who that will be. As the book is still being designed, the first batch will be ready for delivery 12 months, but for those who want to get their hands on it before anyone else, we’ve added it as a campaign reward.
How you can help
In order to put on the exhibition, we have to match the Arts Council’s award of £15,000 by raising an additional £15,000 to cover the exhibition’s costs. The success of the exhibition will help us establish a firm financial platform for the gallery’s permanent relocation, so we’re asking our close friends and fellow travellers in the design world and further afield to lend us a hand.

Anything our well-wishers can spare will be truly gratefully received and duly acknowledged in a range of rewards (see our rewards to the right and at the bottom of the page). You can hear from some of our more high profile supporters and advocates in the video above, but we look forward to welcoming into the Kemistry family anyone who has genuine curiosity in and passion for great design.

Where the money's going (costs!)
- Total Exhibition costs = £30k (£15k already committed by Arts Council England)
- Exhibition venue hire (East London location, at least 1000 sq ft) = £10k
- Exhibition logistics (including transportation, installation and insurance) = £5k
- Exhibition build (including all necessary refurbishments, AV hire and additional lighting) = £5k
- Exhibition staffing = £2k
- Exhibition marketing = £2k
- Kickstarter reward creation, packaging and posting = £4k
- Contingency = £1k
- Spread the word!
To reach our goal of £15k we need to get as much of the design and Kickstarter community behind us as possible, so we'll be shouting about it on social throughout the campaign using the hashtag #SaveKemistryGallery. We hope you can join us too.
The mighty Jean Jullien has also created this #SaveKemistryGallery digital badge for us especially. Share it with pride!

Risques et défis
We don’t anticipate any major hurdles in putting this show together. We have a highly experienced team who’ve been putting on exhibitions with Kemistry for many years, and the goodwill and support of all the artists lending us work for the show.
That said, working in a new venue that doesn’t come ready-to-go as an exhibition space presents some particular challenges, especially in building the infrastructure within the space to create the most dynamic and exciting exhibition possible. We’re confident that these logistical demands can be met on time and on budget by the team, especially as we’ll work closely with the venue to transform it into the perfect setting for this gallery space.
