What to Drink with What to Read
Book Lush is the definitive guide of what to read with what to drink. Book Lush pairs great reads with a drink perfectly matched to the tone, style, period and meaning of the writing. Each section contains an excerpt of a book selection, a brief biography of the author, the relevance of the piece, a description of the writing style and the author's place in modern literature, plus a paired drink recipe. Drink recipes are crafted by bartenders from some of the most interesting drinking venues around the world, with the book selection serving as inspiration.
If Nancy Pearl (Book Lust) and Don Draper (Mad Men) had a baby, and by baby I mean book, that baby would be Book Lush.
The book is designed magazine-style, with retro graphics and fun call-outs throughout. This is a book that would be at home on the book table at Urban Outfitters and will make a great gift for the Book Lush in your life.
A while back during my Japan years, I was sitting alone on my apartment balcony, reading a copy of Haruki Murakami's The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. It was late, but warm. I had Miles Davis Kind of Blue on the CD player and was drinking Cutty Sark (a whiskey) on the rocks. A perfect moment. Imagine my shock when I read as the character Toru played a record of Kind of Blue and poured himself a glass of Cutty Sark. After a moderate freak-out over the coincidence, I greatly enjoyed the blending of the drink and the book. As it was the character's drink, I was able to enter the author's world even deeper and experience the book in a multi-sensory way. Groovy, yes?
After that moment with the whiskey and the Murakami, I began to look for drink references, or even wonder what is the best drink to match with each of my favorite books. My writing friends shared their favorite pairings as well. Sometimes the match was pulled from a direct literary reference, sometime the match was made more on mood and general meaning. All these great conversations let to the Book Lush book idea.
I am so pleased to introduce Warren Bobrow as a contributor to Book Lush. Known as "the cocktail whisperer", Warren has extensive experience crafting custom recipes. Warren is the author of Apothecary Cocktails, and Food and Drink Editor of the Wild River Review.

- Approximately one case of red wine and one bottle of really good bourbon
While the best reward is a digital or print copy of the final Book Lush project, I am offering a few more unique rewards you can choose from.

You give me the book, I give you a custom drink recipe to match! Here are a few examples from the first round of backer pairings. (Just click here or on the image to enlarge.)
A Writing Retreat
Go on a creative vacation to the cabin of famed author Betty McDonald. Spend 3-5 nights at her magical, fully-modernized retreat on Vashon Island, just west of Seattle. You can choose to use the time as a solo retreat to work on your artistic endeavors, or instead bring along a love or a whole family! The reward was generously donated by the cabin's owner, author Abigail Carter. See all the details here.
Writer.ly Reward - Start Your Own Publishing Project
A survey by the New Your Times found that 81% of Americans either plan to write a book, or have already done it. Is this you? Do you have a book in you? Get a head start of your publishing project with three educational webinars, plus access to a special one-hour online conference where you can ask me direct questions about your particular project. As CEO of Writer.ly and a publishing and marketing consultant, I've help guide shelves and shelves of books into the world. Click here on the image below for more detail on the classes.
I have the book outline and first sample chapter complete. As obtaining the copyright permissions for the excerpts and the drink recipes will take a great investment of time, the bulk of the work will occur after the project is funded. And of course, I've got years of reading and drinking research already completed.
I also have a marketing plan in place, as well as outlines for the next books in the series. Book Lush for Classics. Book Lush for Big Thinkers. Book Lush for College (Required Drinking). Book Lush for Romantics.
Book completion date is estimated three months from successful funding.

Risks and challenges
There is always the possibility that I will be struck by lightning, or, more likely, an Amazon delivery truck while I'm crossing the street paying more attention to my cappuccino than the traffic. If I die, I will not finish this project.
Also, while I intend to include small excerpts of other author's work in the guides, there is always the possibility that permission will not be granted. I will only include books where I can get permission. If there is a book that I can not obtain permission for the excerpt, then that section will simply be excluded.
I'm known as "the girl who gets things done." I get things done. There are few risks I can't overcome. I am co-founder and CEO of the tech start-up Writer.ly (a freelance marketplace angel-funded and backed by Guy Kawasaki). I have published three books and helped hundreds of other authors publish, both through my consulting work and through Writer.ly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
