About

The Story

Facts can fade, but stories are sticky. In my work with a nonprofit affordable housing developer, I frequently meet people with misconceptions about affordable housing. Like many growing American cities, Nashville is struggling with a significant affordable housing crisis, at a scale that can be difficult to comprehend and even more difficult to imagine solving. It is critical to break down the stereotypes, numbers, and acronyms that can make housing development so inaccessible, and refocus on the human component of affordable housing.

The initial prototype of the Game of Rent at Nashville's PARK(ing) Day 2017
The initial prototype of the Game of Rent at Nashville's PARK(ing) Day 2017

The Game of Rent began as a simple conversation starter during Nashville's PARK(ing) Day in 2017, trying to engage passersby around housing affordability. Over the past two years, the Game has evolved into a highly effective teaching tool for building empathy and understanding around affordable housing. Whether talking to NIMBY* neighbors or advocating to decision-makers, the Game of Rent helps players put themselves in their neighbors' shoes. With a roll of the dice and drawing of cards, each person assumes a new identity - perhaps a single parent working as a middle school teacher with two kids, or a young professional with a few roommates, or a couple caring for an aging parent. I've played the prototype Game with bankers, students, community advocates, public officials, developers, teachers, and architects - in Nashville and around the country -  and consistently hear feedback like, "I'd never thought about that barrier to housing," or "I didn't know that's what my employees struggle with," or "wow, this is so real - like, this is my exact living situation." The reality is that the rent is too damn high for almost half of American renters, but that statistic is still less meaningful than drawing a Housekeeper card, having four children, needing to account for an eviction record, and trying to find a two-bedroom apartment for under $600. The Game of Rent begins to simulate what members of our communities experience on a daily basis when looking for somewhere to live.

Why Kickstarter?

These challenges are different in cities across the United States, so it's really important that the Game reflects the local context - and that's where the Kickstarter comes in. My goal is to scale this project and make it available outside of Nashville. From Boston to Seattle to Austin to Charlotte, I want to make this tool - and the conversation about affordable housing - accessible to more communities, but I need your help.

The Rewards

The Game of Rent: Nashville Edition is fully designed and prototyped, ready for neighbors and housing advocates to get a full physical version and take it to their next neighborhood meeting! Each physical copy of the Game comes with a "Not a NIMBY*" sticker so you can show your support for affordable housing in your neighborhood.

For other cities, Customized City Editions require the initial sourcing and verification of local data and design of customized map game boards. Every physical copy of the Game comes with a "Not a NIMBY*" sticker.

Want to print and play your own Game of Rent? Print + Play Backers will receive a digital download link for a PDF of the game components with instructions for DIY printing, and details for additional components needed to complete the Game (like dice). No physical components are included with this reward.

Don't have a use for the Game but still want to support the project? Show your support for affordable housing with a snazzy "Not a NIMBY*" sticker.

Live in Nashville, or want to make a trip here (let's be real, who doesn't)!? Rewards levels that include invitations to exclusive in-person Game Nights with local housing advocates, or private Game Nights facilitated by the creator are also available.

Exceeding Expectations

What if this project is massively successful and funded several times over, you ask?!

An online version of this tool is a stretch goal; however this skill set would require additional human resources for the design and coding. Pledges above and beyond the funding goal will be put towards that effort, as well as producing and implementing in-person and online training for facilitators and advocates in Nashville and other cities. Doesn't that sound awesome?!

*NIMBY is a common abbreviation for "Not In My Backyard," often referring to the resistance to affordable housing development in a given community.

Risks and challenges

Being the sole designer, distributor and manager of this project means that there's a lot of things to keep track of - so it's a good thing I'm a bit of a "control enthusiast" and hyper-organized. Fortunately, with the Nashville Edition already completed, the framework for Customized City Editions is already done; I've built in sufficient time to the reward delivery dates to accommodate the customization process and delivery to you.

The major risk for this project is having many one-off backers from different cities, which will require the same amount of research and customization without the economies of scale. However, I've set up the reward levels to accommodate these individual orders - which will allow me to share those economies of scale back to a city that has multiple backers. Another potential challenge is finding accurate and reliable data for all the requested custom locations, which is why all customized locations will be based on the nearest metropolitan area.

I'm a very deadline-driven person, and you can expect consistent communication and updates from me about any unforeseen delays. I want you to be able to use this tool as soon as possible and will do what it takes to make that happen.
