About this project
FUNDED! 4th STRETCH GOAL REACHED!
On the night of her twelfth birthday, young waitress Jenny Brigham is possessed by the Ghost of Augustus Strangebeard, the Pirate Emperor. Since the old captain was missing an eye, a hand and a leg, Jenny gains superior vision, a powerful punch, and a wickedly strong kick... but also the loyalty of Strangebeard's pirate crew!
I've been publishing on the web at Strangebeard.com for over a year now, filling the comic with crazy things that I love: dracula pirates, a gambling Boston terrier, a mysterious governor, and a ten-year-old wizard who takes orders from his dead father's skull. It's the most fun I've ever had as a cartoonist, and Volume 1 has been completed.
** FINAL PINUP ARTIST: TIM SALE! **
The final artist to be revealed is my all-time favorite comic artist Tim Sale, artist of such amazing books such as Batman: The Long Halloween and Daredevil: Yellow. Tim is a genius and it is mathematically impossible for me to be more happy that he's in the book.
** PINUP ARTIST #8: ELLIOT COWAN! **
Another late addition, I'm very pleased to announce Mr. Elliot Cowan, filmmaker and Australian, to the book. Elliot is a New York-based animation director who recently completed his first animated feature film. It's called The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead & Roundhead, and it's very marvelous indeed.
** PINUP ARTIST #7: LAR DESOUZA! **
A late addition to the book, Lar was nice enough to produce this incredible drawing to help me keep updating the Strangebeard.com website while the Kickstarter was running. It was always my intention to ask him for Volume 2 but I decided that I could make space in the current volume, if he agreed. And he has!
Lar will be doing a special Captain Morder drawing for the book!
Lar is also taking donations for multiple sclerosis, so if you've got a dollar or two to spare, please help get Sailor Bacon back for 2014!
** PINUP ARTIST #6: NICK BRADSHAW! **
I'm pleased as punch to welcome Nick Bradshaw, artist of such books as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Wolverine and the X-Men, to The Ghost Pirate's Gift. Nick is an incredible talent and one of my favorite fellows, and I couldn't be happier he agreed to participate.
** PINUP ARTIST #5: MATILDA TINDALL! **
I'm very proud to reveal this awesome abstract painting from up-and-coming creator Matilda Tindall, my three-year-old daughter! She's the both the co-creator and star of my diary webcomic The Adventurers. This is her first published piece.
** PINUP ARTIST #4: FIONA STAPLES! **
I'm very excited to announce Eisner-nominated superstar artist Fiona Staples (Saga) as the next pinup artist! She's drawing Captain Morder, which I'm thrilled about as Fiona's first comic book was the great vampire satire Done to Death (recently collected by IDW).
** UPDATE: WANTED POSTERS! **
Now that we've comfortably passed the minimum, I'm releasing a new special reward level: WANTED CRIMINAL. At the $175 CAD level, you'll receive not just the book and PDF, but also a handmade, tea-stained 11x17 wanted poster of your very own, complete with a sinister nickname and crimes of your own devising!
** PINUP ARTIST #3: TOM FOWLER! **
I am very happy to reveal that the third top secret pinup artist is the marvelously moustachioed Tom Fowler! Tom is a great friend of mine and one of the most blazingly talented painters I've ever seen. It's a real treat to welcome him to the book.
** PINUP ARTIST #2: MIKE ROOTH! **
We're gonna make Strangebeard into a book I can hold in my hands! Now, let's make it even better!
Strangebeard, Volume 1: The Ghost Pirate's Gift will collect Parts One through Five, which you can read at Strangebeard.com right now. The story is a complete arc starting at Jenny's ghostly possession and continuing to the epic battle between Jenny and the vampiric Captain Morder.
The good news is this: I'm done! The complete 114-page Volume 1 of Strangebeard is in the tank. Once I've finished the design work and fully assembled my crack team of A-list pinup artists, the book is ready for print with your much-appreciated assistance.
Strangebeard, Volume 1: The Ghost Pirate's Gift will contain the following:
• 128 pulse-pounding all-ages pages in softcover! UPDATE: Upgraded to medium weight paper and heavyweight gloss cover!
• 500 copies of the book in deliciously vibrant full colour!
• A tasty pinup section containing all-new Strangebeard art from nine artists including USA Today's Artist of the Year Riley Rossmo, illustrator Mike Rooth, painter Tom Fowler, Eisner nominee Fiona Staples, Marvel artist Nick Bradshaw, webcomics superstar Lar DeSouza and Eisner winner Tim Sale!
• A scintillating foreword from industry legend Richard Starkings, founder and First Tiger of Comicraft and creator of Elephantmen and Hip Flask!
Let's make a book. Books are the best.
Jenny Brigham is a hard-working eleven-year-old who helps her mother keep their tavern running on a lawless island in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy.
However, on the night of her twelfth birthday, Jenny is mistakenly possessed by the Ghost of Augustus Strangebeard. Since the old pirate was missing an eye, a hand, and a leg, Jenny is gifted with superior vision, a rock-hard punch, and a super-powerful kick... but also the loyalty of Strangebeard's aged but duplicitous crew.
Now, hunted by both the law and Strangebeard's seven super-powered killers, Jenny must assemble the magical Effects of Strangebeard and become the new Pirate Empress.
As a special bonus, Strangebeard, Volume 1: The Ghost Pirate's Gift will include a foreword by Elephantmen creator Richard Starkings. The book will also include a pinup section featuring some of my favorite artists. The first one I'll reveal is USA Today's Artist of the Year Riley Rossmo (Green Wake, DrumHellar). Check it out:
I will be revealing new pinup artists every couple of days during the campaign, so be sure to check back often!
Peel your peepers and cast 'em to the right! While most of my goal is simply to publish a beautiful little trade paperback of Strangebeard, Volume 1, I've assembled a host of backer rewards to help stir the pot, including postcards, PDFs, and original art in a host of varieties.
But are there stretch goals?
You bet your buckles there's stretch goals!
• $5,000 - UNLOCKED! Everyone at the $25 level and up gets an awesome GIRLS MAKE THE BEST PIRATES die-cut sticker AND a FRIENDSHIP IS THE BEST TREASURE (EXCEPT FOR GOLD) bookmark! Ooo arrr!
• $6,000 - UNLOCKED! The physical book is upgraded with nicer, thicker paper and a nice sturdy gloss cover. Shiny as a gold doubloon!
• $7,000 - UNLOCKED! The Strangebeard Volume 1 site will be mirrored and professionally translated into French! A very special and specific treat for my home province of Quebec. Merci beaucoup, mes amis!
• $8,000 - UNLOCKED! The book will be extended by twelve pages! If we reach this goal, I will include "The Ballad of Strawberry Sam", a short story that reveals why Strawberry Sam (ninja pirate hunter) was late in arriving on Crook Island. This will be an exclusive to the book, it will not appear on the site.
UPDATE: I will also be adding gold foil to the logo on the cover!
• $9,000 - LOCKED! I will be able to print 1,000 copies instead of 500!
This is my first crack at a Kickstarter, and I am 100% committed to its success. I want this book in your hands. As it has always been with the webcomic itself, your assistance in spreading the word about this campaign via Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook or message in a bottle is much appreciated.
I cannot tell you how excited I am to hold this book in my hands. I love making the comic and I love the freedom of the web but my mitts are aching to flip through those pages.
Let's do this! Yo ho!
Risks and challenges
The book is complete! My hand is hovering over the red 'Print This Book!' button as we speak.
The risks are limited to either printing delays or delays in getting the final art for the pinup section, and, of course, the slim possibility that my studio is attacked by pirates and I am taken hostage.
However, I will keep each and every one of you up-to-date on the book.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
That's great! I'd be happy to send them to you.
All you have to do is add $1 CAD for STINK and/or $5 CAD for THAT'S SO KRAVEN! to your pledge... and then (HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART) send me a message telling me that's what you are doing. I'll send the PDFs along right after the campaign is complete.
I love your initiative! Send me a message and I will help you figure out what to pledge to cover shipping.
Great! I want to send it to you. Overseas shipping is a little more expensive than domestic, so please get in touch with me if you're concerned and I'll run the numbers to find out what it'll cost.
