"We are human citizen's Blessed by the colors of our skin
And the dreams of our children And the gifts that we all share"
The Project Vision
Hi friends, thanks for your interest in possibly coming on board and helping me complete and release the new CD Human Citizen. My goal for this campaign is to raise enough funds to cover most of the cost of the recording project and to have enough funds left over to create some videos that will help raise awareness for a couple important issues that inspired some of these new songs. The fact that I recorded and self produced the project at my own studio has helped me keep some of the cost down a bit but producing a quality recording like this one takes time and money no matter how much of it you do on your own.
Those of you who already know my music are well aware of my belief in the power of community and the resiliancy and strength of the human spirit as well as my commitment to also speak up for those whose voices and stories might not be getting heard. For those of you just learning about my music welcome, and thank, you for checking this campaign out. I'm very proud of this new collection of songs and humbled once again to have been able to work with so many passionate musicians who have helped me bring this recording to life. The new album features both striped down acoustic arrangements as well as full band tracks and features a couple strong singles that are poised to find good solid footing and air play on the Americana and AAA radio charts nationally.
This kickstarter project gives you an opportunity to be a part of this creative project along with me by purchasing the CD before anyone else gets it and choosing a custom reward or cool combination of packages that might enrich your musical or artistic world a bit and help me complete the final stages of the mixing and mastering process and ensure that this music gets heard throughout the country and around the world. It will also allow me to create videos for some of the songs and continue a more effective social media, radio networking and outreach stratagey.
This platform works on an all or nothing format so if I don't make my goal the money is not distributed to me and your credit card will not be charged. It's important that I make my base goal, so with that in mind I would ask if you're a friend or fan who enjoys my music maybe you would consider sharing this project with folks you know who might also enjoy the music and message and be interested in helping us reach our goal together.
Thank You for your consideration
I feel deeply honored to be able to connect with all of you through music. To travel throughout your communities and share our stories and lives with song and to have so many of you come out to the shows and share the music with your families and friends is an experience I never take for granted.
I've always enjoyed working hard at projects I believe in and have been able to help raise my family with a balance of music and working as a carpenter and contractor. The kids are up and grown now and I've been making my living as a full time touring musician, producer and instructor for the last 5 years and feel very fortunate to have been able to create my own recording studio in the mountains of Santa Cruz where along with producing my own records, I am also able to help other great artist and musicians write and record their own projects.
Much of this has been because so many of you came on board 4 years ago to help me with my last release, Soul Connection.`And since then the audience base, touring opportunities, radio play and internet streaming have increased substantially. You all have been my record company, management team and moral support system and I can't thank you enough. My gratitude runs deep friends and you are truly a part of my music and my work as an artist.
The Creative Tribe
Joining me on these tracks in the studio were some of the finest and most soulful musicians on the planet. they included my dear friend and longtime live touring drummer, Jim Norris. The incomparable Dayan Kai on vocals, Keyboards and wind instruments, Doug Pettibone known for his work with Lucinda Willam's, Mark Knolpfler and John Mayer among others on Electric Guitar and Pedal Steel. The legendary Tiran Porter from the original Doobie Brothers on Bass, John R Burr, on Piano who has been a huge part of the sound on many of my Cd's. Tammy Brown, on harmony vocals. David Jacobs Strain, on Side guitar. Gianni Stallino On B-3 Organ to name just a few. I also had the opportunity of working with a killer horn section for some of the tracks which featured, Nick Bianchi on Trumpet, Jeff Meyer sax and Brian Moore Trombone.
I'll also be including a surprise Beatles track that features Bill Payne of Little Feat on Key boards as well as Hutch Hutchinson and Ricky Fatar from Bonnie Raitt's Band on Bass and Drums and Randy Mitchell known for his work with Warron Zevon and Donna Summers on electric guitar.
This project has been self produced and recorded at Wind River Recording Studios, which is an inspiring space I helped to create and have been producing projects out of for the last 5 years in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California, the same space I recorded my last CD Soul Connection which many of you came on board for and helped me release in 2015. It's a beautiful large craftsman style building on 61 acres with 16 foot ceilings and windows looking out onto the Redwoods and Oaks. I had stellar technical and assistant engineering support by, David Jeremy Higgdon and Tim Prince who have both worked with me on my past projects. The space has warm live sound and is big enough for the entire band to play together in one room allowing for a lot of natural interaction and spontaneity. We use a blend of analog gear, vintage mic's, pre amps and outboard gear as well as some very clean digital technology to capture a very high quality warm and natural sound.
Music and community
Many of you often comment and at times share your appreciation about the number of benefits I choose to play in and around my touring. Thank you for that but as you know they can't all be benefits or I wouldn't be able to continue this journey, and cover my bills, but I do get the opportunity to share my music with and for many worthy causes. One of the most gratifying things I am able to do as a singer songwriter is to help connect people to each other through music and to come to together to celebrate, empower and educate one another about our common humanity, and in these times that is becoming more and more important to all of us and our younger generation as well. To me music belongs to all of us and is ours to share together. I hope you might feel that if you choose to contribute to this campaign in a very real way your also supporting these causes and supporting an artist like myself who tries to help wherever they can. And just think of how good you'll feel when you see that your ol' pal Keith is playing another benefit for a worthy cause somewhere and knowing that in a way your onstage with me lending your spirit and voice to the good fight.
A song and video for our Veterans
One of the most important songs on this new CD is one I wrote with a good friend of mine who received two purple hearts in the Vietnam war. The song is called 22 Angels and speaks to the devastating suicide epidemic our veterans are dealing with. We are currently losing on average almost 22 per day and since 1997 we have lost 125,000 to suicide. This statistic seems staggering to me and one of my goals with this project is to try and get some strong airplay nationally with this song and also create a powerful and important video around it that will help raise awareness about this important issue. I'll also be doing what I can to tie with in with veteran groups in many of the towns I play in and tour through to try and help highlight their issues and struggles and get the attention and resources they deserve.
Where the money goes
First stage goal $14,000-16,000
Well friends, most of the CD is already recorded and waiting to be final mixed and mastered. I'm looking at releasing a couple of singles in the summer to start some radio momentum before the CD's official release in early fall. The money that I receive from good folks like yourselves will go to help me pay my musicians, cover my recording and mastering cost, art work and duplication as well as the to limited run of vinyl records I'll be producing for the campaign rewards and also help me create promotional materials along with hiring an effective radio promoter who will see to it that these songs get heard all over the US and throughout the listening world.
2nd stage goal $18,000-20,000
As you all know, video has become almost as important as the song these days so along with helping me cover the main recording cost you'll also be helping me create funding to work with some creative film makers to produce some compelling videos for these songs in the interest of helping to raise public awareness and helping the music to reach a larger audience world wide.
As I mentioned above, it's my goal to create a powerful video for the song 22 Angles to help raise awareness and highlight our Veterans issues and have something people can share and circulate with others throughout their circle of friends and social networks.
Also given some of the troubling trends we are seeing resurface around the globe and even here in our own country around race, culture and immigration, I would also like to create a celebratory and empowering video of the title track, Human Citizen in which we highlight the beauty of our diversity as people and cultures through out the world.
"One world community of tolerence and dignity,
Everybody's got a right to be free
Thank you deeply friends from the bottom of my soul for even considering to help out with this project. I know these are very interesting times and cost of living and demands on our time and bank accounts are getting pretty high, but for those of you who can afford to join the team and help me see it through, it would mean an incredible amount to me. And for those of you who can't help out right now but support my music and have checked out the video and project, thank you also it means a lot to me as well and please feel free to share this link with others. I'm inspired everyday by all the good things each of you are doing in your worlds and communities to help keep compassion and simple kindness alive in these interesting times.
It's good to be on this planet with you all and thanks again for the consideration and trust.
Risks and challenges
Friends, I'm compelled as a song writer to tell stories, put em to music, and travel around and sing em with good folks like your self and keep the medicine of music and community alive.
As I mentioned up top, most of the recording is complete and the mixing has begun. other than the possibilities of some slight delay due to a technical or art work issue or my deciding to dial it in a bit more for artistic reasons, this record will get completed in the time frame I've set and I sure do hope we get to take pride in it together!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
