"Stretch Goals" Update – January 16, 2016

Within the first two days of launching, the Snoot Zine crowdfunding campaign was already way more successful than I had anticipated. All 100 of the physical zine subscriptions had been claimed, and we still had 27 days to go. Because of this, I am adding the following "stretch goals" which I hope you'll help us achieve!

200 backers - The Double Trouble Stretch Goal
One of the four issues will be a double issue. 16 glorious pages of movie love.

666 backers - The Devil’s Stretch Goal
A special additional issue about the cinematic depiction of Satan, including our own experiences producing Sean Byrne’s THE DEVIL’S CANDY.

1000 backers - The “For Your Consideration” Stretch Goal
A special additional “For Your Consideration” issue of the zine, which will consist of handmade “For Your Consideration” award campaigns for my favorite movies of 2017.

1500 backers - The “More Then Meets The Eye” Stretch Goal
I will force myself to watch all five Michael Bay TRANSFORMERS movies, and I will make an additional “More Than Meets The Eye” issue of the Snoot Zine that celebrates the unique cinematic achievement of Michael Bay’s robotic pentalogy.

1863 backers – The “Most Popular Zine In Kickstarter History” Stretch Goal
Some boring zine about entrepreneurship got 1862 backers. If we can beat them, I will commission the creation of a large custom trophy for myself that says “Most Popular Zine in Kickstarter History.” When a new zine inevitably beats the Snoot Zine, I’ll send the trophy on to the creator of that project. Hopefully this will become a tradition that is handed from zine creator to zine creator until the heat death of the universe.

About the Zine

I produce movies, and I spend a lot of time thinking about cinema and filmmaking. For the last few years, I've shared some of these thoughts on my Twitter feed, my Tumblr, speaking at festivals and conferences, and the occasional podcast appearance. I thought it would be fun to try something more retro for 2017, and produce a physical zine that shares my love for film and filmmaking.

I also have a stash of digital and physical ephemera related to the various films I've produced (such as The Wackness, You're Next, The Guest, Blair Witch, and Anomalisa), and I think it'd be fun to find ways to incorporate this material into the zine.

So I guess it's kind of a twofer. A zine made by a passionate informed film fan, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse at some cool indie movies.

What do you mean by handmade?

For the first year, my plan is to make each issue of the zine using the Rookie guide to making a zine. I'll lay out each issue by hand on a large single sheet of paper, and then photocopy this master issue to create the (up to) 100 physical copies that will be sent out each quarter. That means each issue will have 8 pages. That's not a lot of pages, but each page will be filled with handmade weirdness and filmic love.

I suspect the issues will mostly end up being black and white to keep with the retro aesthetic, but I do have the capability of doing color issues when I think it's worth it.

What sort of stuff should I expect to find in each issue?

I'll cram as much fun and passion as I can into 8-short pages of handmade zine action. That might include some of the following:

  • Short essays on filmmaking.
  • Quotes from my favorite filmmakers.
  • Interviews with interesting filmmakers.
  • Articles about my favorite movies.
  • Really bad art by me.
  • Really good art by my more talented friends.
  • Random fun stuff from the library of Snoot ephemera such as this unused poster concept for The Guest.

Why is the physical zine limited to only 100 copies?

I've wanted to do a fun retro zine for a while, but I was inspired to finally create this project by Kickstarter's new make/100 initiative. If the first year is a success, then I'll probably expand further in the future. But for 2017, your only opportunity to get physical issues of the handmade Snoot Zine is to become a backer of this Kickstarter campaign!

What is the limited art print in the "Be Our Guest" reward tier?

The artist Karl Fitzgerald has created a beautiful set of limited art prints based on our film The Guest. There is a regular edition of 100 and a variant glow in the dark edition of 50. Both prints are 18x36 numbered screen prints. You can click on the image links below if you just want to buy the prints without backing this campaign.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk is that my office photocopier stops working, and I have to travel to a Kinkos but in truth I don't even really know if Kinkos still exists. Didn't they merge with FedEX or UPS or something? Seems like a weird combination of companies, but what do I know, I'm not in the business of next-day shipping and/or charging people 50 cents a page to send a FAX that some old-fashioned business is forcing you to use even though it's 2017 and the FAX machine is a relic of an era that used words like mimeograph and carbon paper. But who am I to criticize the FAX demanders since here I am trying to convince you to buy a photocopied zine like I'm a teenager in the 80s with strong thoughts about Black Flag.
