our matireal path is in: celebrate with us tomorrow on the artery at our thanks(for)giving party!

Bird's eye of the matireal trailroad
Bird's eye of the matireal trailroad

Happy Friday - I hope this update finds you in time.

I wanted to thank all for your support, especially Willie "Jack" Fields who has devoted an extraordinary amount of time and resources to facilitate and manage this project, beyond his own fiscal support of this campaign.   Jeff Haneline and Rob Zdanowski were also critical both to the success of the campaign and throughout the duration of the construction of the original matireal path, right here in Harambee.

Kickstarted by each of you, this concept for matireal became a reality through partnerships with the City of Milwaukee, the Department of Natural Resources, Earthbound Development, Bliffert Lumber, Freedom by Design, and Milwaukee Tool.  The topping off of the 300 foot trailroad will be taking place tomorrow with the support of bobcat Mike.  We'd love to invite you to help us put the finishing touches on it and celebrate incredibly tiresome labor.

This will happen outside atop the Capitol overpass in the crisp autumn air in concert (yes there will be music) with our thanks(for)giving volunteer engagement party, starting at 11am on the artery at the Capitol overpass. Details can be found @:

http://beintween.ning.com/events/final-satireday-its-going-to-be-our-own-thanksgiving-party-11-16-

We are going to have Mikal Floyd-Pruitt spinning records, Dori Zori of 88NINE Radio Milwaukee doing a Community Story, and food to celebrate the completion of the first ever matireal trailroad, which all started by asking a neighborhood the question, what do you imagine this corridor could be?

The answer, "We just want the trash cleaned up."  With an intense amount of support over the past 6 months, we were able not only to remove close 1200 tires from the area's alleys and local garages, but create a permeable path across an unused overpass and activate a pedestrian connection at grade to keep people from having to change grade or cross high speed traffic on Capitol Drive.

A few Satireday night Burts
A few Satireday night Burts

It should also be noted that we collectively consumed several hundred tacos from Corazon at the other end of the Beerline

What else?  If you come tomorrow, you will get a pre-release our $40K Call for Performance Ideas open to adjacent communities as part of our 'Creational Trails initiative with Art Milwaukee and the Greater Milwaukee Committee funded by ArtPlace America.  This will Call will reward and produce the Top 20 Performance Ideas to be hosted once a week at the artery during the summer of 2014!

Let's hope today's mild November weather lasts through our event tomorrow.  My apologies for the lack of notice; there was a question until the last minute as to weather we could even pull this off.  The point is we're going for it, and would love to see you there.

Best,

Keith + the team beintween

P.S.  Thanks to you all for being a fundamental part of our ongoing mission to make [art] do [work] + connect people to space. That (and this below) is how place is made!

dear matireal supporters:

our connection across the capitol overpass is really taking shape:

our next volunteer event is this tuesday, from 1-6pm, with tacos to follow for all.  if anyone has the afternoon off, please come out and join us.  we are getting really close....details at:

 http://beintween.ning.com/events/tire-taco-tuesdays-11-5-2-00-pm

also, here's a sneak peak at our next crowd-sourcing effort; please check it out at:

http://saveourswings.org/

we are officially launching this tomorrow, and would love your continued support to make this month our second annual YESvember!  this 'common cents collaboration' is an initiative to save our swing park (that we at beintween installed last year under the holton viaduct) and raise funds towards a person who can help the creative and cultural economy in milwaukee.

what else is new?  i received a very humbling honor this week, coined the director of arts and trash.  while there is definitely some humor in this, i am very appreciative of being named one of milwaukee's 20 most creative people by milwaukee magazine.

article by tim mccormick

of course, all of the momentum began with your support and belief in what beintween is trying to introduce, namely matireal.  i can't say express my gratitude enough for the faith you've provided that keeps beintween growing little by little as an organization that is making big differences.

of course, we are not without are stumbling blocks; our shipping container was broken into for a second time last night, and all the locking mechanisms were destroyed, but we've employed a couple old rail plates and shackles for the moment.

nonetheless, we will continue to move onwards with one of my favorite two word combos ever, coined by francis kere, who encourages us to "play seriously."

best,

keith + the beintweeners

matireal trail under construction + hallotween invitation!

thanks to you all, a simple idea for matireal is becoming a reality that has inspired so many positive relationships to extend the beerline trail into harambee.

we have been hosting a number of taco + tire tuesdays over the last couple of months, and with this incredible volunteer support, are now installing our prototypical path.  there is 250' linear feet of path to install; thus far have about 100' laid in place.

willie jack and jaleen

we have all of our matireal units (over 1,000) prepped, the path excavated, and are currently stitching it all together.  if you are interested in helping out, we'll be on site tuesday and saturday afternoons until it is complete.  bring a friend, and a pair of gloves (and an extra drill if you can) to adopt harambee's namesake, which means "all pull (or in our case, drill) together"

tomorrow, tuesday the 29th, we'll be getting started early given the setting sun.  as our hallotween treat, we will also be screening this film after dark:

you are encouraged to join!  here are the details for tomorrow's event if you can make it:

http://beintween.ning.com/events/hallotween-party-tuesday-10-29

this is also going to be jaleen's last night as a neighbor of the artery - he will be missed!

if you cannot make it, be sure to click this link for upcoming events - if you'd like a reminder as events come up, just log onto beintween:

thanks for your continued support of beintween's mission to make [art] do [work]!

Update #27

volunteering for matireal [tuesday, 9/17 @ 5:30pm] gets you free tacos [@ 9pm]

Comment

tomorrow is the last tuesday to breakdown tires!

it has finally cooled down - thank goodness. we are running out of daylight in the evening, so we are starting at 5:30pm tomorrow. if you are interested in helping, come on down to n. 2nd and w. capitol dr. anytime prior to 8:30pm, and look for the big red shipping container, sponsored by milwaukee tool.

volunteering for this event helps us both clean up and connect communities with our new permeable paving surface.  afterwards, we'll be treating all to tacos at corazon at 9pm.

big news: by day's end tomorrow, we will have processed our first 1,000 tires with nothing other than your support and a few utility knives, saving community garages over $2,000 in disposal fees, while also providing us with enough treads to start fabricating several hundred feet of our matireal prototype. the fabrication will commence next tuesday and continue every tuesday night [same time, same place, same tacos] through the end of october.

thanks goes out to wes at milwaukee tire and battery for delivering the last couple truckloads of tires and for showing us how to lace them up like a pro.  my sincere gratitude extends to all of those who continue to support this social + ecological innovation be it through your donations or your time.  it goes without saying, but none of this would be possible if we weren't all pulling together, a.k.a. harambee'ing.

hope to see you out there tomorrow!  if you can make it, please bring a pair of gloves and an extra pair of hands too!  we could use the help to finish strong.  any questions?  good ideas?  need directions?  call me, keith @ 773.331.0211.  thank you!
